I been reading that you guys like U2 check out this News:

Sanctus Real have just recorded a new song for an album called In The Name Of Love: Artists United For Africa" which is set to release this fall. It is a collection of U2 songs covered by Christian artists who are committed to raising awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Africa along side D.A.T.A., and organization set up by U2's Bono. The band recorded U2's more recent hit "Beautiful Day." A portion of the proceeds will go to D.A.T.A to help the crisis in Africa and also to The Awake Project, a local organization that connects the Church with facts and resources about the African AIDS emergency. Other artists appearing on the record include Delirious, TobyMAC, Sixpence None The Richer, Jars of Clay, Nichole Nordeman and others. To find out more about D.A.T.A, visit www.datadata.org.

I got it at www.jesusfreakhideout.com

Well, this shouldn't be too much of a stretch for Delirious?; half their songs sound like U2 covers anyway. But TobyMac and Nichole Nordeman? Now THAT should be interesting.

...and, more likely than not, horrifying.  =)

Even the idea scares me. That's something I won't be touching with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole.

I might have to check that out, if only through morbid curiosity.

Eh, I know he doesn't get much love around here, but I actually don't think he's too bad. More importantly (maybe), with his fairly raspy voice he could probably pull off a passable impression of Bono if he tried.

I heard Luna Halo do a U2 cover live once. "With Or Without You." It was quite good.

It's an unwritten law of CCM that all artists must cover U2 at some point in their careers. And it makes sense; I think it's also an unwritten CCM law that you must be an avid U2 fan or you're disallowed to record an album.

I wonder if there would even BE "Christian rock" as we know it without U2? I'm thinking definitely not. Without The Joshua Tree to model everything after, CCM would probably have much more in common with the Jesus Music of the 70s.

Perhaps you're right (though I personally think you attribute everything from miraculous healing to the invention of peanut butter to U2), but is that really a point in their favor? I mean, look at a lot of the Christian rock being played on the radio today!

No, I didn't mean that to be an argument for how cool U2 is. Just an observation, and an interesting one in light of all the flak that U2 used to get from CCM artists.

Well, I can't think of any in particular, but mainstream evangelical Christians who failed to grasp the point of U2's 90s material gave the band a pretty hard time. It was probably inaccurate to say that it was Christian artists; after all, we've already established that most of them seem to worship U2...

More accurately, most of 'em enjoyed U2 in the 80's and got lost/confused/upset with them in the 90's, and are now breathing a sigh of relief in the 00's. (Don't ask me how to say "00's". I have no idea.) When it comes down to it, the CCM industry is very much a fairweather friend to U2.

I agree that way too many Christians bands emulate U2... But I think most of the time when they cover U2, the results are favorable. I think that's because with the earlier work that most of these bands are likely to focus on, I appreciate the song more than U2's actual recording of the song (because it was the 80's and the production's not as good... though there are notable exceptions). For example, I vastly prefer Circadian Rhythm's version of "Gloria" and Human's version of "Bullet the Blue Sky".

Man, if I could set up an all-star lineup for a U2 cover album done by Christian bands... that would be fun! I'll have to think about that one and get back to you. Looking forward to seeing what really happens even though I'm sure some of it will be cringe-worthy.

I must admit, Tree63's cover of "Pride" is first-rate.

Wow, I've never even heard that one. Where did you get it from?

Here are some song/artist pairings that I think might work well for a U2 tribute album by Christian artists... of course I'm blurring the lines here on what constitutes Christian artists... I'm trying to focus on songs that haven't already been covered to death in CCM... so no "40" on this list!

I Will Follow: Anberlin
Sunday Bloody Sunday: Pax217
New Year's Day: Supertones
Pride (In the Name of Love): The Elms
Bad: Jennifer Knapp
Where the Streets Have No Name: Iona
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For: Ginny Owens
With or Without You: David Crowder Band
Desire: Jars of Clay
All I Want Is You: Sixpence None the Richer
Zoo Station: The Juliana Theory
Even Better Than the Real Thing: The Benjamin Gate
One: Tree63
Until the End of the World: Evanescence
The Fly: Switchfoot
Mysterious Ways: Kevin Max
Love Is Blindness: Over the Rhine
Numb: Grits
Lemon: Newsboys
The Wanderer: Derek Webb
Discotheque: The Echoing Green
If God Will Send His Angels: Dakona
Gone: Luna Halo
Please: P.O.D.
Beautiful Day: Sanctus Real is actually a great choice here!
Elevation: Earthsuit
New York: Steven Delopoulos

Tree63's cover of "Pride" shows up in a lot of their live shows. Not sure if you can find a recorded copy of it anywhere or not.

Quote
With or Without You: David Crowder Band

I'd pick Switchfoot or Luna Halo for this one.

Quote
Desire: Jars of Clay

Oh, NO WAY! I like Jars of Clay, but I'm sorry, I just can't imagine them playing the blues well AT ALL!

Quote
The Fly: Switchfoot

I'd nominate Kevin Max for this one; he has a flare for the theatrical, which is needed to pull this song off well.

Quote
Love Is Blindness: Over the Rhine

Yes. Actually, "When I Go" kinda remind me of this song.

Quote
If God Will Send His Angels: Dakona

This may or may not work; having only heard Dakona play one slow song, how can we really judge how well they handle the ballads?

Quote
Gone: Luna Halo

Yes.

Quote
Elevation: Earthsuit

I'd pick Kevin Max or Delirious? here.

Quote
Lemon: Newsboys

Oh, this one makes me cringe. Youth groupy bands should NEVER attempt to cover U2 songs!

Those were just off the top of my head because I needed a break from work. Your objections are mostly fair (though I picked Newsboys for "Lemon" because Peter Furler could handle the falsetto and the overall style well), and I agree that Kevin Max would work well for "The Fly".

Youth Groupy...LOL!

Actually, I agree with murlough that "Lemon" and the Newsboys are a match.  I think it could work quite well.
