Oh, I like her voice! Is she the lead singer?
I think I have a cassette or CD of them somewhere. I'm always buying things when they are cheap and then I forget to listen to them. I'll look for it later.

What song is that that begins with a few melodic guitar riffs, and part of the lyrics are "If nothing else, I can dream,".

I think could get into this type of more or less introspective folksy stuff.
What I have heard so far is wonderful.

Are they still making studio albums and when was their last one?

1.  Yes.
2.  Drunkard's Prayer

It doesn't surprise me that you like them...Karen Bergquist's voice is absolutely heavenly.  You really ought to search out Drunkard's Prayer if can find it - I'm pretty sure you would be impressed.  Her vocal work on "My Funny Valentine" (yes, that "My Funny Valentine") is especially good.  And "Little Did I Know" is one of my favorite songs of the year.

It does surprise me. I didn't think their stuff would be CCM-ish enough for Paul. But hey, I'm not complaining.

Paul, I'm probably in the minority here, but I think you should start with Films for Radio, the album that "If Nothing Else" comes from, which also features my favorite OtR song, "The World Can Wait". It's also the most musically diverse of theri albums that I've heard. The album's they've put out after that (as well as Good Dog Bad Dog, which preceded it) are very sparse and folksy, maybe even jazzy in places, and they're good stuff too, but they've taken a little longer for me to appreciate since I'm more of a wall-of-sound guy and I like how they experimented with their style on Films for Radio. I think that album is the best gateway for new OtR fans to come through.

One word of caution - there are some swear words on their albums. But it's on the order of roughly one per album, and I don't think there are any on Good Dog Bad Dog or Drunkard's Prayer (a.k.a. the Horse's Ass album).

Well, I know that Paul's musical tastes are often based on vocals, and her voice is right up his alley (he seems to really love sultry, smokey, raspy vocals)

For what it's worth, Drunkard's Prayer made #2 on Christianity Today's Top Albums of 2005 list.

Good, but they're stark-raving mad for putting Nothing Is Sound at the very top, and Illinois got away?  Goofy.

In a way, I wish Karen used an f-word so they'd have to put it in the "wish we could include" column.

As for the live album, I wish I could keep up with them better.  I still don't have Changes Come!

Yeah, Switchfoot is there because they now have lifelong status with Christian critics as "that intelligent band that the mainstream likes too", and while that's commendable on both counts, it shouldn't mean that they get a free pass that puts them at the top of everyone's list. There were better albums released by Christian artists this year (though to be fair, every single one I can think of did end up making the list at some point).

Sufjan probably wasn't considered by as many of the critics because it fell outside their normal listening scope. It'd be nice if they had all gotten to it, but in all fairness, Sufjan is a little more obscure (even if he is gaining a lot of buzz and credibility).

I was going to make some sort of comment like, "Gee, OtR doesn't swear, so they're eligible for the list again!", but then I thought the better of it. You troublemaker, you.

just a FYI, archive.org has a few live OtR recordings available for download. some  of the shows are available in one lossless format--flac or shn--while others are also available in various lossy formats--ogg, mp3...

You rule!  I pulled off the 6/25/05 concert the other day, and I'm loving it.

glad you guys are enjoying the music!

there is a newer show up and it is awesome. great sound and quite a variety of songs, including a new one. believe me, you want this.
be sure to download Kim Taylor's opening set, too. (if you like her stuff, there is a longer show with a full band here that I highly recommend.)

anyway, if there's anybody here who doesn't have high speed internet, I'm willing to burn a copy of the show and send it to you.

I've become a pretty big Over the Rhine fan now.  After getting Drunkard's Prayer, I got Ohio and Good Dog, Bad Dog.  Then, my wife bought me Changes Come for Christmas and now these awesome bootlegs have come along via the great Schil.  Thanks to Josh & Schil for opening my ears to this great band.  My next step is to pick up Films For Radio and maybe work backwards to pick up their back catalog over time.

P.S.  I play Drunkard's Prayer for my sweet little daugther every night at bedtime...have to get her started off right!

You should definitely get Films for Radio, DGP-- it was my first OtR album and it still holds a special place in my heart. I think it's actually better than Drunkard's Prayer, but I'm sure there are many who disagree with me there.

From there, you might work your way back to Eve. It's a much bluesier side of OtR-- the only album in their catalog that's full-on rock and roll-- and they pull it off quite well. That's the album that has "My Love is a Fever," which is still a highlight of their live shows.

w00t, another convert. (to OtR and to my loyal band of minions who call me the great schil... laugh)

I still haven't gotten Films for Radio but I've heard a few songs from it. also need to get Eve.  I still haven't ordered this Taft recording yet, so I plan to order them all together if I can.

I would rank Good Dog, Bad Dog, Ohio, and Drunkard's Prayer all ahead of Films for Radio.

I'm exactly the opposite. FFR is my favorite, then Ohio, then I can't decide about the two others.

i'd endure much to hear "Son Of A Preacher Man." i bet she does that in an awesome way. years ago i was thinking about what songs they should cover and "Son Of A Preacher Man" was at the top of my list. here's hoping that they one day cover Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me." Smiley

That was great!  I liked the part near the end where she was clapping her wings and shaking her tail.  Hilarious!

There are many reasons for me to like Karin.

1)  Great voice.
2)  Based on this video, a great sense of humor.
3)  She's Swedish
4)  She shares (except for one little letter) my wife's maiden name (Bergquist/Berquist).

Amen. You need to have a talk with my Dad... he doesn't like her voice, and doesn't like any of their music. *sigh*

He likes Sixpence though, and a lot of Sixpence fans like OtR. Oh well.
