It's that time again. Pitchfork is the first major publication to weigh in, compiling their usual list of the top 50 albums of the year. And their #1 pick might surprise-- well, actually, it probably won't surprise anyone. The entire list is oddly predictible for Pitchfork, and their top album is the same one that everyone else seems to be picking. So, here's a thread for discussion of the Pitchfork list, and for posting any other relevant links/lists. |

Well, that #1 pick might be predictable, but sometimes things are predictable because they're totally called for. And while I knew almost every critic in America loved Illinois, I was surprised to see it actually make #1 on Pitchfork's list. I might just have to set my differences with Pitchfork aside now. I mean, what are the odds of us having the same #1 for the year... and that album being made by a Christian?
I think I'm finally starting to agree with those who say that Illinois is even better than Michigan. I just don't want to have to downgrade Michigan to 4.99 stars.

Well I must have fallen completely out of the loop. I only recognized 10 of the albums (if that many) on the list, and own none of them. I think quite a few albums are missing as well.

Well, let's see here. Of their top 50, I have heard of 13 and heard 7.

49, Fiery Furnaces, B-
30, Franz Ferdinand, A-
26, Decemberists, B+
19, Sleater Kinney, B+
12, New Pornographers, A-
4, MIA, B
1, Sufjan Stevens, A+
I can understand those seven being in their list...the rest of them? I guess I'm not indie enough.

For what its worth, of my own Top 10 albums of 2005, only three make Pitchfork's Top 50. I've only got two - Sufjan and the Furnaces (who may be outside the Top 10 now, but they're certainly in my Top 20). Honestly, that's two more than I'd have expected. Most of the stuff I like, I wouldn't expect the folks at Pitchfork to be interested in. |

My list has been neglected. Expect it to be done by the end of January.
(I'm very glad to see Sufjan at the top of Pitchfork's list, though. It's #2 over at cokemachine)

I was glad to see Sufjan made Pitchfork's #1 spot. I haven't seen Sufjan at the number one spot anywhere else yet, and I think it deserves it.
I think I found only four from their list that I own, though I've listened to others:
Ladytron- Witching Hour
Sleater-Kinney- The Woods
The Hold Steady- Seperation Sunday
Sufjan Stevens- Illinois
All great albums.

I haven't bought any of these albums (except Sufjan), but I've heard several of them through internet radio. Love Sufjan being on top, nice to see props given to Decemberists, sthingy and New Pornographers - who I've really been digging this year. Hmm, check out Amazon's #97?. A pleasant surprise. Their list is actually pretty good. I noticed that PopMatters listed New Pornographers as #1 and Sufjan Stevens as #2...that's interesting. |
