hey guys, i figured i owed you all an explanation for my sudden departure. it is ABSOLUTELY not for melodramatic reasons. it has to do with just how tempting it is for me to post, and how i don't want that to hurt my work performance. i don't have the net at home, so i pretty much use all my breaks at the phorum. it was starting to get beyond that a bit though, so i decided that i had to bite the bullet and just delete my easy access to posting. part of my job IS to find good music, so i'll still be lurking and on rare occasions i'll post. but i've got to draw the line and stop my consistent participation in the ongoing and ever-changing conversations here. i'm very much interested in staying in touch with anybody who wants to stay in touch with me. you're a great bunch of music fiends...and why i've been coming here so long. here's my email: tiny.rain.band@gmail.comps i'm also still interested in hearing those 'Mizzle' opinions too, when you've finalized them. you guys know who you are. : )

Josh,
Please justify why Def Leppard is in your top 10. I am truly interested as to why it is there. I fail to see how a cover album could be considered good enough to be top 10 material. Just my 2 copper coins
Ask and you shall receive! I'm in the process of uploading my review of the album right now, and will start a separate thread for the album shortly. Also, Erlewine's review at AMG is right on the money, I think, so you may want to check that out.

Ok. Much appreciated. As much as I enjoy Def Leppard, I just don't like this album. Also reminds me of a funny, but cruel, joke. What has 9 arms and rocks? DEF LEPPARD!

I've listened to Camera Obscura. They are a very good band and would make it in the top 20, but not the top 10.

I only heard about half of their first album, one time, so I'm hardly an expert, but I think I'd probably prefer Van Occupanther.

Is How To Live Without A Curse the remix of the album of something?
But I agree that How To Live With A Curse is one of Stavesacre's best. I would still put at least Speakeasy above it, though.
Thank you for pointing out my error. My mind was sidetracked while typing that. Given some time, I believe HTLWAC will surpass Speakeasy. It won't be easy, so to speak...ok ok bad pun

Top 30 7. Deas Vail - All The Houses Look the Same 9.00
holy cow...how do you have that?! i didn't think it was out. they are from my area and great people. i was hoping they would get a chance to make it 'big' with their signing last year, but alas their previous label collapsed before this album was able to come out. but somehow you have it...and i'm jealous. I have their independent album, or rather my wife does. she's a big fan, b/c their original bass player, who was tragically killed when his bike was hit by a car nearly two years ago now, is the brother of a good friend of my wife. i'm glad to see someone knows who they are and likes them though.

Aw, man, I just realized the guy that gave me that album tagged it incorrectly. It appears that I actually have This Place Is Painted Red, their album from 2005 (I think). He also gave me a copy of the Collapse EP, which they just put out like a month or so ago. So, I guess it comes off my 2006 journal. I'm looking forward to their label debut - both of these albums are stellar.

I took some albums off my digesting pile. I had too much on there as it was and wanted to get rid of the albums I wasn't going to get to anytime soon. I may get to them eventually.

So, this may not be the best place to ask, but I haven't heard a single album from '06; what would you all highly recommend that I actually take the time to hear? Nothing has really, solidly interested me, excepting that new Who album which is supposed to release sometime in October or November . . .

I'd recommend that you check out The Listening, The Elms, The Violet Burning, House of Heroes, and I know you don't like them any more, but the new P.O.D. is worth a listen. I'd also recommend Pearl Jam, but their politics will probably piss you off.

Well, I liked Satellite a lot, and this sounds a lot like Satellite with a few new ideas but some lesser songs, so a B rating compared to Satellite's B+ sounded about right. I'm not head-over-heels-in-love with it, but it's a fun listen. It sure as hell beats Payable on Death, which I gave a C+.

i guess that's the beauty of diversity and of a board like this. i wouldn't have pegged you to have liked it that much, and I don't see the Satellite comparison personally (i loved Satellite), but it's cool. For me personally, though, it's the one album I've bought this year that I feel like I wasted my money on. Actually, i wound up giving it away to someone in my youth group. I was thoroughly disappointed.

I had thankfully not bought Satellite, as big of P.O.D. fan that I was a few years ago. I burned my friend's copy and then got rid of it shortly after because I couldnt stand the record.

It doesn't sound like that record so much, but it has the same spirit. Those are P.O.D.'s "catchy, but still heavy" records, whereas Payable on Death tried to forego the rap altogether and take a softer approach, and it didn't work. The biggest problem with Testify, I think, is the shortage of songs that I can tell will become P.O.D. classics. Lots of songs that I like, but very few that I'll point out to others and go, "Youn should hear this, it's an awesome song!" Even my favorites pale in comparison to my favorites from Satellite. ("Roots in Stereo" might be an exception.) It's also the album that introduced me to Matisyahu. I gotta give them credit for that.

The Who's Endless Wire--i.e., their first new release since 1982--is hitting stores on MY BIRTHDAY.
And the songs I've heard sound awesome. They may be old enough to be my grandparents, but Pete and Rog still got it . . .
You have no idea how excited I am about this.

I can't quite fill up a top ten list yet... I am still anticipating quite a few records this year, especially from The Hold Steady, Iron and Wine, and Starflyer 59, that I expect will make my top ten, and also a few releases that I just haven't gotten around to buying yet.
1 - Scott Walker - The Drift 2 - Danielson - Ships 3 - His Name Is Alive - Detrola 4 - Serena-Maneesh - Serena-Maneesh 5 - Jars of Clay - Good Monsters 6 - Arab Strap - The Last Romance 7 - The Listening - The Listening LP

Pete Yorn's new disc Nightcrawler is rising and might crack the top 10. It is top 15 right now. Lovely, soulful rock n roll in the vein of Springsteen and Dylan with a tinge of Eddie vedder voice but you can understand Pete

I saw it in a couple lists on the previous page... Whether 06 or 07, I'm still anticipating it though. Woman King was the only ep I've ever considered putting in my top ten list (it didn't make it, but still).

If you check out his myspace page, I'm afraid you'll be adding Steven Delopoulos to that list. It's looking like January or February.

I could see any of our resident metal heads (or, indeed, former metalheads - looking in your direction Wildcat) liking the new Mastodon album. I don't understand what's being said most of the time - what else is new? - but there is plenty of guitar heroics, monster drum fills, and a certain visciousness in the delivery of it all. All of this and a progressive approach to the genre means that I don't think you're likely to hear a better metal offering this year.
