Just saw this on one of the forums that the rabid AA fans created.  Mark announced that this will be the final year for the band.   From a musical standpoint, thank goodness.  They have steadily declined in quality since the turn of the century and sadly fell into the rut of the youth group band, making no creative and musical progress.

They're like the Supertones.  They should have hung it up two albums ago.

I meant to say at least.  I haven't kept track of how many crappy ones they've released, though.

Thank God. Audio Anesthetic was really starting to irritate me on their last three albums or so. (Lift was OK... I really liked "Ocean Floor" and "Rejoice"... but after that I haven't been able to get into a single song of theirs.)

They bugged me to no end, because you could tell there was a rock band hiding behind all that youth group/pep rally facade. I heard them back on DC Talk's "Free At Last" tour after hearing yawners like "Audio World" and "My World View" on local CCM stations (followed by endless self-proclaimations that they were an alternative rock band you could give to your Nirvana-loving friends). I knew PDA and Big House from the old CCM-TV show, so I knew they had some fun songs. But, in concert, you could tell they were an old-fashioned rock band. They finally got the chance to realize this on "Bloom" and "Some Kind of Zombie." I guess they didn't get good sales of Zombie (or radio play), because they went back to being a youth group band, just a better version.

Still, I loved their cover of "The Hairbrush Song."

Because I did like this band at one time, I'll go ahead and list my favorite AA songs:

1) Free Ride
2) Get Down
3) Memoir
4) Ocean Floor
5) See Through
6) This Day
7) Blitz
8) Some Kind of Zombie
9) Rejoice
10) The Houseplant Song
11) Chevette
12) Good Life
13) Never Gonna Be as Big as Jesus
14) We're a Band
15) New Body

Interestingly, that's close to what I'd pick. Cut "Blitz" and a few songs I haven't heard, and add a few of the better songs from Worldwide, and I think I'd agree.

Of course, I mostly agree with you on Worldwide - it's just that I think there was a great album wanting to get out under there. I mean, Church Punks should have been expanded, they should have made up their minds on Worldwide, Pour Your Love Down should have been less generic, Pierced should have sounded like them, Miracle should have tried to rip off U2 less (although I still suspect that it influenced HTDAAB), and generally, the songs should have been finished better. Their producer really should have told them to work on the songs for another month or two, and maybe try out more of 'em live before recording them. That album could have been awesome if they had pushed themselves a bit harder.

I'm kind of disappointed that they're breaking up....they're a band that I felt never really reached their full potential. Granted, I've heard rumors of solo projects (one of which I'd be interested in), so maybe I shouldn't say that yet.

You know, now that I think of it, I enjoyed their work with Jennifer Knapp more than any of their actual albums. The guitars, vocals, and production work AA members did on her first two albums worked rather well.

I didn't think that there were any memorable songs on Worldwide. Like, at all.

Same goes for their latest - OK, so the cover of "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher" was semi-amusing, but it really should have had a lot more oomph to it instead of relying on one dinky background vocal to carry the chorus.

To be fair, I saw at CCM fests twice, and a few of the songs were better live. That's a big chunk of why I think that album could have been something much better than it was.

I often appreciate lackluster albums a little more when I see them performed live. Caedmon's Call's Back Home notwithstanding.

But I haven't seen Audio A live since about 1998.

Audio A has ALWAYS been better live, by far, than on their albums.  I hadn't seen them in a long time until October, and they still had a pretty good live show.  But their albums lack the punch of their live shows, and that made them frustrating, because as someone said previously, they always seemed like they had a rock sound waiting to happen that never showed up on the albums.

I have to admit, I'm not really surprised with this news. Mark's voice has been getting worse and worse, and I could tell that when I saw them at Rock the Universe a year and a half ago. It was a good show (I agree that they're a lot better live), but Mark's voice sounded strained and scratchy.
I want to say I'm sad to see them go, but they haven't been good since Underdog.

Their live bootleg sucked though, as did the first time I saw them (back in the Don't Censor Me days right before bloOm came out). Once they got rid of that "If You're Happy and You Know It, Bang Your Head" crap, they started doing a lot better. Their Zombie Tour was pretty good (I'm still bummed that I got there late and missed the Supertones and Jennifer Knapp).

That is the greatest title ever.

hahaha.  I hope some band uses it as a song title and it becomes a huge hit.  it's so dumb and awesome at the same time.

It was literally the "If You're Happy and You Know It" song that we all learned in Sunday School, played tediously over and over, with them slowing down so Mark Stuart could scream "BANG YOUR HEAD!" while everyone did exactly that. They had to stop doing it when people started hurting themselves. Gee, I wonder why.

Okay, that's not so awesome.  Still, your version sounds funny.

*sigh*  Yeah, I'll miss them.  They always brought rockage in a big way live.  They were consistently a highlight of the Alive Festival in Ohio year-in, year-out.  That being said, without Mark, they really aren't Audio Adrenaline.  So, yeah, good move hanging it up.  My 20 favorite songs, in no order:

1.  Chevette
2.  Some Kind of Zombie
3.  Blitz
4.  We're A Band
5.  Big House
6.  Ocean Floor
7.  Glory
8.  Summertime
9.  Lonely Man
10.  You Still Amaze Me
11.  I'm Not the King
12.  Free Ride
13.  Man of God
14.  Get Down
15.  Hands and Feet
16.  Underdog
17.  Mighty Good Leader
18.  The Houseplant Song
19.  Start a Fire
20.  Worldwide:  One

Album Ordering
1.  Bloom
2.  Lift
3.  Underdog
4.  Some Kind of Zombie
5.  Until My Heart Caves In
6.  Don't Censor Me
7.  Worldwide
8.  Audio Adrenaline
