Mute Math has finally let us know what the delay is with their new album You can read it on their My Space but in short Word Records and Warner Bros. were both giving them the shaft. Legal hilarity ensues. At least they are going to tour and sell the full length without the need of the label. I'm very proud of them.

that was a pretty incredible read.  good for them for not cowering to the whims of people trying to change the essence of who they are and of their music.

Good for them. Now Jars of Clay needs to follow suit and tell their label to stick it.

It's good to see Mute Math taking a strong stand on this one and not compromising their artistry one bit.  I think we, the music fans, will be rewarded in the end when the CD comes out.

As for Word Records, I didn't really have any respect for them anyway, and this incident pretty much confirms my feelings toward them.

Part of me would laugh if their album really sucked after all this...not that I expect it to.

The two songs I've heard off of it are really good.

I heard Noticed, someone ripped it from the E-Card apparently and put it in mp3 form.

Eh, I never got the point of that "stick it to the man" stuff. I'm glad that they found a way to keep their career going in spite of the troubles in their way, but that's it as far as extra coolpoints go for now.

I'm hoping to see them when they come near me in February though. That might win them more "coolpoints".

Sometimes "the man" can actually help you... I mean, the point of record labels is to give musical artists wider exposure. So it's not that they're cool just for sticking it to "the man"... it's that they stuck it to a "man" who showed little to no regard for their wishes after entering into an agreement with them. If "the man" were actually a helpful resource, sticking it to "the man" wouldn't make much sense here, but when the man is coporate CCM looking to pander to an imaginary audience of big stupidheads, then yeah, I'll give coolpoints for telling 'em where they can stick it.

Yeah, but "sticking it to the man" wasn't the motivation. They didn't even do much sticking. They just decided to do-it-themselves for now. That's just being practical, and not some big "we're rockstars sticking it to the man!" nonsense.

Right, I don't think the intent was to piss off "the man". It's just that they asserted their freedom - if "the man" wasn't going to cooperate with their vision, then instead of just going along with what "the man" wanted, they told "the man", in not so many words, that his services were no longer needed. That's a big deal in a world where too many others, either driven by fear, ignorance, or visions of dollar signs, will just go along with whatever "the man" says to do.

Just downloaded the new album yesterday, since I might not make it to next week's concert and I don't plan on waiting forever and a day for a label to release this thing (though I will buy it if the opportunity presents itself). For all who want to listen as well...

Linkage

Of course, I highly recommend attending one of their concerts and picking up an actual copy, if this is feasible for you. It'll be well worth your time.

Christian Downloads Forum

Be warned... some of the people there are eeeeeee-diots. (More so than CMC.) And they'll ban anyone who appears to be a "leecher". I appease them by uploading old, obscure stuff every now and then. Needless to say, I don't bother having very many actual discussions with people over there. They're pretty legalistic, which makes their attitude about downloading all the more curious.

You know what makes me laugh? In the song typical, I keep thinking that, instead of "I'm just the typical", Paul Meany is singing, "I'm just a tippy cow". That amuses me to no end.
