Sweet. I filled out the survey. Here's hoping there's still a enough goodness left in the 'verse to bring Firefly back.

I just got the Firefly DVDs (thank you income tax!) and of course I love it so far, so that would be very exciting.

Any idea if this thing is making progress? I just recently started watching Firefly with my roommate, and though I wanted to hate it (I don't like the slavering Joss Whedon fanboys), it's actually quite decent.

I haven't heard anything. I had bought the dvds recently and thought off and on that I bet you would enjoy the series if you would just give it a chance. didn't want to say anything though, lest you stubbornly refuse to watch it on principle. (I like Firefly a lot but am not a slavering Joss Whedon fanboy, er fangirl.)

I've never really watched his other shows, but, based on Firefly, I think Whedon is deserving of at least SOME slavering fanboydom.

I've thought about checking out his other shows despite not being remotely interested in what they seem to be about. vampires? bleah. but I didn't think the idea of a space western sounded appealing either. yet what I enjoy the most about Firefly is not that they are big damn heroes in a strangely familiar but foreign environment, but that the characters are so compelling. I want to know what they're about, where they've been, and what's going to happen to them next. and why can't vampires (or is it vampire slayers?) be compelling characters too? well, I don't know when I'll actually get around to watching Buffy or Angel, but someday. if I don't get distracted by something shinier.

I like Buffy a lot. I didn't think I would, since there were so many stupid girls I went to high school with who called themselves slayers and blabbed about it all the time, but just like Firefly, it's incredibly witty and not at all what you'd expect. (I actually got into it before Firefly.)

good to know! in that case I'll have to add the show to my queue and bump it up.
say, did you try out netflix or blockbuster online yet? netflix sent me a "friends and family get one month free" email the other day. (the regular free trial is for 2 weeks.) I'd be glad to pass along the email if you'd like.

I find that some of the show is really predictable. Whedon does this thing where it's so apparent that he wants you to think something, obviously that thing is going to (shock!) turn out to be false later on. I would give some spoileriffic examples, but I'm sure you can find some for yourself. Also, the captain's character is very common--the roguish gallant with a heart of gold. He's practically the same character as Captain Blood, written almost 80 years ago. There's this subtext of "despite everything, you're still a good guy, Mal" in almost every episode. But it's alternately compelling and funny, so I forgive its shortcomings and overall enjoy it.
And I don't always refuse to watch things that people tell me I would like. Just...most of the time.

I don't remember which episode we're on. We just finished watching the one where the captain gets "married", and if I recall the DVD title screen correctly, the next one is called Jaynesville. We also watched the two-hour pilot episode first, since it was designed to be first (even though Fox played it last, I believe).
All of the episodes seem fairly similar. I don't think I have any favorites so far. My favorite character was the fat man who acted as Mal's second in the swordfight and who had them illegally transport his cattle. Too bad he was only in one episode.

I was going to wait until next month since we're moving around the first, so as to avoid confusing myself and Netflix, but if it would be good next month that would be awesome! No one asked, but my favorite Firefly character is definitely Mal, with Wash and Zoe in a tie for second favorite.

my favorite character...I can't decide on a favorite character. I love Zoe and Kaylee and River and Jayne's hat. with Mal, I would want him on my side, and I would be loyal to him if I were a crewmember, but I don't think I really like him.
my favorite episode (and the one that got me hooked) is Out of Gas.

Yes, if it's not a problem. I might be able to use it, so just in case. I appreciate it! River gets on my nerves for some reason. Inara bugged me in Serenity, before I saw Firefly, but I really like her on the show.

Oddly enough, Inara bugs me on the show, but not so much in the movie. I still don't much like her character. She seems to only serve as a frustrated romantic interest for Mal. Her stories in the show usually happend totally seperate from the main story and she didn't do much in the movie aside from the one scene with the Operative. She's just not that interesting. I mean, Jayne isn't that deep either, but he is a much more interesting character just as comic relief.

Jess, no problem at all. I sent it to the email addy in your phorum profile.
Inara is my least favorite character. I hated her in the movie. she seemed so pointless. in context of the show I guess she comes in handy as an ambassador, as they say, but I find the whole concept of Companions being high-society folks to be revolting. I really don't get why Mal loves her or whatever. my favorite Inara scene is when she insists in a dopey voice that she "only fell, is all". haha.
I love River and can't really relate to the crew when they regard her with fear or suspicion and call her crazy. poor girl. Simon is such a good brother.

I just watched a few season 1 episodes of Buffy. not really sure what to think of it. the campiness (and ugliness of the vampires) annoys me more than it amuses me, but I like Buffy and Willow and Giles. and hey, I just remembered that the shots with the school were filmed in my area at a local school, Torrance High. I guess Buffy's house is nearby, too. I shall have to go see because that's the sort of geek I am. XD anyway, I'll keep watching just to see if there's any character development. surely it can't just be Buffy killing more and different baddies each episode. oh yeah, I wasn't even thinking about it when I changed my avatar and personal text, but it is a fitting response to Vlad!, I think.

Hm, saw Serenity this evening. To be honest, I was a little disappointed. Anyone who's seen the movie is no doubt familiar with a couple of the major things that bothered me. Some of the more minor things: * Too much use of the brightness filter. Yes, if you crank it way up you can make everything look really washed-out. Congratulations. Don't do it on every other scene. * Noises in space. The series itself was laudably good at maintaining its physics. One area where most space flicks fail is that shots are shown from space with noises everywhere--weapons fire, engine noises, explosions, and the like. In Firefly, there was only the silence of a vacuum. However, in Serenity all of a sudden...there were noises. * Too many fake death scenes. What is this, the Lord of the Rings? "Wait, I thought he died two scenes ago?" "He got better". "His windpipe was crushed and his neck was broken". "He got better". * Lots of reliance on the series for background. I admit that this is justifiable in some sense, but the movie strikes me as a Left Behind book--those who already buy into the thing love it, but it's not going to create any converts. I can see why Whedon didn't want to waste time on background material that the fans of the series would already be familiar with, but it could have stood on its own better. * Direct continuation of the series plot. In one sense, it's good to get closure on a few things that were left hanging at the end of the series. In the other, by making the movie a direct continuation, any further releases in serial form (the real topic of this thread) will have to either accept the changes made by the movie--creating a different and somewhat inferior product, ignore the movie, or take place before the movie (which is the best option and certainly possible, but there are still problems with this created by the movie).
Despite this list of grievances, it was a decent end to a decent series, and I don't begrudge it the approximately two hours of my life I spent on it.

I saw the movie first, too. it seemed to stand on its own well enough, though I did wish I knew more about the background of the characters. but after seeing the series and watching the movie again, I liked it less. well, not really less overall, but I didn't care for it as a continuation of the story. certain characters getting killed rather pointlessly and such. if they do another season, they should just ignore the movie, which already has some discrepancies from the series anyway.

I agree with ya there. When I first watched it there were parts I didn't understand well enough to enjoy them until after watching the show. And the deaths were useless for the story. And now Joss Whedon says he has a way to bring the chaacters back that isn't cheesy.

so on New Year's Eve, i was introduced to Firefly. basically i was told it was awesome and Season 1 was lent to me. i had been meaning to see Serenity the movie, but hadn't. i really had no idea what any of it was. i quickly became hooked... my wife and i watched the whole series (incl. all the special features) in the span of a week, whilst still attending school/work. the plot, setting, and characters are all awesome. we plan to see Serenity soon. my order of favorite main character to least favorite: Jayne, Wash, Kaylee, Zoe, Mal, River, Inara, Book, Simon. best episodes are "Ariel" (going to the hospital) and "War Stories" (freeing Mal & Wash from their toturer).
what i want to know is this: has anything come of this "petition"? any news?!?
