I decided to give The Shins another chance after Chutes Too Narrow failed to make an impression on me a few years ago, so I downloaded Wincing the Night Away and I've given it a few listens. It's not bad. Some songs are boring (I'm not a big fan of unembellished guitar pop when the lyrics don't jump out at me - their lyrics are kind of weird but not in a way that really amuses me), but overall I like how the synths and a few funkier drum beats merge with there simple core style. It's one of those discs where I like specific songs more than the album as a whole. We'll see how I feel by the time I've listened to it enough to actually rate it.

I was at a resteraunt. I ordered a chicken sandwich, but I don't think the waitress understood me. Cuz she said "how would you like your eggs?". So I tried to answer her anyhow, I said incubated, and then raised, and then beheaded, and then plucked, and then cut up, and then put on a grill, and then put on to a bun. Damn, it's gonna take a while! I don't have time - scrambled! -- Mitch Hedberg

Deepspace5soul - Beat Rabbi & Deepspace5
I ripped it from Beat Rabbi's myspace page. If the rest of the album is going to sound like this song, it could very well be the best thing yet by DS5. I mean, heck, even my wife likes this song.

Critical Metrics, which takes the metacritic approach to online music by providing a playlist of songs recommended by various critics. Quality varies, but it's sortable by hip/hop or rock; or by source. Good for something a little different.

Albums I've been listening to a lot lately...
Iron & Wine, Our Endless Numbered Days System Of A Down, Hypnotize The Almost, Southern Weather
I also downloaded the entire Beatles discography, so going to try and see what all the fuss is about, since I'm not too terribly familiar with their music...

Heath McNease - The Heath McNease Fan Club Meets Tonight
This is a pretty fantastic hip-hop album. It is produced, mostly, by Playdough of Ill Harmonics and Deepspace5. I read Andree's review over at CT, and he nails it pretty good. As he said, a lazy comparison would be to John Reuben. As much as I like John Reuben, this sounds more "legit" as a hip-hop album. I think everybody who listened to Word of Mouth by Reuben commented on him being found lacking in the flow and delivery department. Well, McNease has that pretty well covered. Plus he plays a mean acoustic guitar. I think there would be several here who would enjoy this.

The more I've listened to it, the more I realized that it just sounds awkward when you're not used to it. I still don't think any serious hip-hop-head would see Reuben as "legit", but that's not what I think Reuben's going for anyway. Reuben can deliver a more syncopated and satisfying flow when he wants to, so with him I think it's about what fits the rhythm of the song, and I think he's a little more willing to rap to things that aren't typical hip-hop rhythms.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. I don't have much of a problem with his flow. Listener often carries over words at the end of a sentence into the next line just because he wants to - and because nobody else does. It's all a part of who they are, and I respect that.
Aside from that, I think you're one of the people who could really like this album.

If we can't allow room for some individuality, then we're just as bad as the purists with their hop-hop rule books. hat said, there's a difference between being unique because that's who you are or that's what sounds best to your ears, and just being weird for the sake of being weird. Occasionally Reuben flirts with the latter, I think. Aside from that, I think you're one of the people who could really like this album. I'm downloading it now, so we'll see.

Tool's Lateralus got some serious play while I was studying for finals--"The Patient" and "Parabol/Parabola" in particular. Steely Dan's Gaucho, a couple Johnny Lang albums, blindside's Silence and now Who's Next are in heavy rotation.

Funny how it's so heavy and yet so trance-like. Certainly is a hell of a lot more listenable than their latest one. NP: "I Say Nothing", Sean Watkins

I like a couple songs from 10,000 Days more than individual songs from Lateralus, but as a whole, Lateralus is the better album and it isn't even close.

Indeed. I can't come up with much that I don't like about Lateralus. Maybe the mid-section of "Ticks and Leeches" wears on a bit too long. I'm not even bothered by "Faaip de Oaid" any more (though I think the 2-minute break before it is unnecessary - hidden tracks are so over). The only thing that makes me not want to listen to it now is the fact that my copy of the CD is pretty badly scuffed/scratched toward the end, so my car's CD player can't deal with it. I should probably just replace it. NP: "Pulling Back the Skin", House of Heroes

You're not missing anything, but I need my own chance to hear it. I liked Hybrid Theory enough to buy Meteora even though I knew it was more of the same. Since that's not a guarantee here, and since your response to what you've heard is even more derisive than usual, I need to proceed with caution. That's all I'm saying.

Well, maybe I am - I'm interested in hearing your take after you've heard it. I don't have the stomach to endure the whole thing in one sitting. At this point, I'm bracing myself for a rough ride. Probably some music that I'll enjoy, but I'm fully expecting the lyrics to be embarassing. I kind of like "What I've Done", but it's really just a less interesting retread of "Numb". Even though Mike Shinoda is a bit mechanical, I think I'm going to miss the rapping. By all accounts it sounds like they're trying to go about "maturing" in every wrong way possible - one of those self-conscious, silence-the-critics things that backfires. But that's only based on what I've heard about the album thus far.
