Funny you should say that when you liked IAH and IHY so much. But I won't argue. It's pretty tedious.

I think the production on SOTP is atrociously muddy and Schuylar (sp whatever) sounds like he'd been sleeping in a strip club chainsmoking for six straight days before their studio days.  Awful.  He was crystal clear on IAH and his voice has a new, refined "edge" on IHY.  IHY also has some kickass licks, hooks, and other musical things that end in -ks.

Win!

I try, I try.

I also relistened to Wale's Attention Deficit last night and I can't get him out of my ears.  I know he gets points from me just because he's a DC boy but I really do think he's the best new kid on the block I've heard...in a while.

"Adrift" by Barenaked Ladies came up on my iPod while driving to work this morning; I was once again impressed by how the song is full of puns, but still comes across as heartfelt rather than humorous.

Temple of the Dog - s/t

For those who don't know, Temple of the Dog is Pearl Jam + Soundgarden before they rose to fame, yet this album finds them already in their prime.  I don't know much about Soundgarden (didn't they reunite this past 1/1?), but I really like what each band brings to the table.  Both singers are at the top of their game here.  I might even rate this album album as highly as Pearl Jam's Ten.

Listened to the new Vampire Weekend today. Like the new electronic element - it enhances their sound without making them any less distinctive. I liked pretty much the entire thing right off, but I wish it wasn't so short. Then again, no room for dud tracks, so maybe it's good for an album to be lean 'n mean sometimes.

I'm enjoying it as well.  I think a short format suits them pretty well.

Animal Collective - My Girls

Has it ever occurred to anyone that social stats are not material things, while four walls and adobe slabs are? Just sayin'.

I don't love the song any less... it's just funny that I was listening to it for like a year before that even occurred to me.

I think he roughly means that he's not wanting to appear interested in material things for social status purposes, but he just wants these things to provide for his family.  However, I do hear "like a social stats" when I listen (lyrics are unprovided by the band, and there are some minor differences in the ways different sites write it out).  People have thought of this, and I've heard the idea that he's saying "like they're social stats" - that may be helpful, and he does say whatever he says there rather fast.  I don't care, though, since I know exactly what the guy means.

I always thought he says "slats", too, but IMBW.

I listened to the William Basinski record today.  Am I hearing it wrong, or is it the same woozy three notes looped for literally the entire album with a bit of hiss and pop here and there?

I'm not sure if I could sleep to it or not, but I think I could.

More or less... these albums are more about the textures.

I'm familiar with a little of what he's done, so I know he likes his loops.  I could see myself using it for ambiance, but I have to confess to not getting it as an active listener.

I know what the song means. I'm really in tune with that meaning. There's a good reason it's gonna be the first track on my "2009 in a Nutshell" compilation. I just find amusement in taking things literally sometimes.

If we're going to be pedantic about it, "like" is a vague word. I would normally parse the word "like" in the sentence "I don't mean to seem like I care about material things like social stats" to mean "I don't mean to seem as though I care about material things such as social stats." (In other words, I don't want to have the appearance of caring about material things, of which social status would be one example.) But it also makes sense to parse it as "I don't mean to seem as though I care about material things as if they were social stats". (In other words, I don't want to have the appearance of regarding material things as indicative of one's social status.) It depends on whether you take that second "like" to mean "such as" or "similar to".

What's funny to me is that I took it the first way, and it made total sense, not because I was misinterpreting "like", but because I was misinterpreting "material". I'm so used to songs about material things describing them as superficial that I usually don't take the word to be literally referring to physical objects. Instead, what was probably meant here is that he does care about material things in the sense that they meet the basic needs of the people he's responsible for caring for, but he doesn't care about them in the sense that it indicates his status in life to others. Which is essentially what I took the song to mean anyway.

(Oh, and I didn't write it out as "like a social stats", even though that's how it's sung, because "a" doesn't make sense next to a plural, and it's probably just an easier way to sing it since "like social stats" doesn't flow as well. It's "like-a", not "like a" - the "a" is just a meaningless syllable.)

A bunch of stuff about what's being sung in that Animal Collective line.

I've always heard it as "like a social status"

also, to bloop, Adobe comes in slabs, but I've never seen it come in slats, so I'll probably stick to hearing that as slabs.

Sounds like one syllable to me, but the meanings are equivalent, so not worth quibbling about.

You could use an Adobe product to draw some slats if you like.

I hear it more as a "t" sound than a "b".  I don't really have much expertise in the area; however, some research suggests that Noah confirmed "slats" as they are a popular roofing tile in some parts, but I'm finding it difficult to find a direct quote, so it's on the level of hearsay (take it with a grain of salt).  At any rate, "four walls and a roof" makes a lot of sense to me, either way it actually goes.
