Vampire Weekend - "California English"

Well, this explains why nobody understands me and people always ask me to repeat myself.

"In Exile" by Thrice

Is it weird that I like most of the ballads ("Circles", "Wood & Wire", "The Great Exchange") more than most of the rockers on that album? "All the World Is Mad" and "The Weight" are my top two tracks, but beyond that, the up-tempo tracks don't do as much for me as they did on past Thrice albums.

Is it weird that some of the drum parts in "Run" remind me of "Sunday Bloody Sunday", or that the melody of "Diplomat's Son" reminds me of Lily Allen's "Smile"?

In related news, I've been through this album four or five times now, and I'm still having trouble picking out favorite songs. It's that consistently good.

Muse - "Uprising", repeatedly

One of my students is borrowing my iPod to focus better on his exam, and my headphones leak a bit of sound.  I have an itch to tell him that they do have other songs on that album, some of them pretty good.

Fair: Disappearing World

The album is currently streaming on New Release Tuesday's website.  So far I like it a lot.  I still haven't decided whether I like it better than The Best Worst Case-Scenario or not, but I have decided I'm definitely getting it the week it releases.

Today at work I've listened to these so far; Further Seems Forever - The Moon Is Down, Arcade Fire - Funeral, and All The Day Holiday - The Things We've Grown To Love. Music like that makes the work day so much better.  Grin

Yeah.  "Pagan Poetry" is more aptly described as transcendence enshrined in song, or something like that.

Finally got around to listening to Steven Curtis Chapman's beauty Will Rise. Wow. This is powerful stuff. I'm glad that he made a conscious effort to strip things down a bit and not go the usual youth groupy, poppy route, given the subject matter. I suppose you could call it "adult contemporary" and some of that sort of stuff on his past albums has been boring, but there's a vulnerability to it this time that is obviously informed by what SCC went through. The songwriting has vastly improved - even when he's pulling back from the specific stuff and exploring more universal truths, it hits harder because of the surrounding context, which is the way I think Christian songwriting should work. I like it, and I haven't liked a Chapman album right away since... honestly, since ever. Usually I just like specific songs and then there are several others that don't stand out at all, usually because I'm listening for the bouncy pop stuff.

Charlotte Gainsbourg

I'm just on the first track, but it sounds very intriguing.  I'll be putting this in my 2010 list since I missed it last year and it did have a 2010 date in the UK and US.

He enjoys musical S&M.

Strangely, I'm listening to the exact same song I was last time I posted in this thread.  I can't quit listening to Kid Cudi this week.

To make sure I'm not criticizing something that somehow magically managed to stop sucking. Don't worry, it's not like this stuff takes up anything close to the majority of my listening time.

Pearl Jam - No Code

This album's supposed to be, like, difficult or something. But I enjoyed it on first listen and have continued to with deeper listens. It might be my third favorite after Ten and the avocado album. (I'm still digesting Yield, Binaural, and Riot Act, though.)

I miss them too. I don't think their two albums are as stratospheric as I once did, but it's extremely addictive alternative pop music, and Contact especially takes me back to a fun year of my life.

Have you heard her solo album?  I know she put one out but I feared the stink of Jeremy Camp potentially contaminating it/watering it down and haven't gotten around to it yet.
