I was at a resteraunt. I ordered a chicken sandwich, but I don't think the waitress understood me. Cuz she said "how would you like your eggs?". So I tried to answer her anyhow, I said incubated, and then raised, and then beheaded, and then plucked, and then cut up, and then put on a grill, and then put on to a bun. Tony Bennett's Snowfall album.  Of all the Christmas albums I've heard, this one is probably in the top 2 or 3.

Daughtry's album (the bald dude from American Idol + studio band).  I don't expect anybody here to like this album all that much, but I'm liking it quite a bit.  Sure, it's basically a mix (although, I feel, an improvement over) of Fuel, Live, and Nickelback.  But none of those bands have a lead singer like this.  His voice sounds awesome on this record.

So I don't really mind Kutless so much, by I'm listening to their new live album right now and it's hilarious.  Seriously, their lead singer is so funny!  The only problem is, he isn't trying to be.  How many times can you say something about "getting crazy," "is everyone doing okay," or "thank you so much for being here."  Murlough, you must download this for the sake of a good laugh.

now that I work a lot more during the day and can bring my ipod with me, I find that I listen to music constantly in the car and at work, but rarely when I'm at home. mainly because I'm like "okay! now that I have a couple hours I can watch a dvd!"

but anyway, I was just listening to a partial track of Kim Taylor's song Turpentine. it was recorded live, and even though it's incomplete, there is something so powerful about it. it gets a lot of play and I never get tired of it.

This is a very belated response, but I did exactly that, and for that exact reason, and I did laugh quite a bit. It made #1 on my "Worst of the Year" list (with Hearts of the Innocent at #2). Cheers, Kutless!

I haven't participated in this thread in the past because I figured my Music Journals, the "Recently Acquired Music" thread, and the "NP:" I put at the bottom of most posts covered it. But starting in 2007, I figured I'd like to let you guys know what I'm checking out from time to time, since I often listen to stuff before buying it. This week, I'm trying to fully digest the following albums:

The Hold Steady, Boys and Girls in America
Joseph Arthur, Nuclear Daydream
Newsboys, Go
All Star United, Love & Radiation

Thus far, I think Joseph Arthur's album is good if you liked his past stuff, but nothing particularly new for him. Our Shadows Will Remain was a stronger album.

The Newsboys album isn't bad. I don't mind the increased techno/dance influence - still not a return to "rock roots", but then, they only really rocked on Take Me to Your Leader and select other songs - their past output has been largely very programmed and that's the kind of band they are, so as long as the music is fun and the lyrics are trying harder than they did on their worship albums, I'm OK with it.

All Star United sounds rather insipid so far - like Revolution, but with actual full-length songs. I'm having a tough time handling the lyrics, except for "The Song of the Year", which is a blast. A bit hypocritical for them to poke fun at mindless Christian radio hits when the rest of the record appears to be an attempt at exactly that, but whatever.

I'm still on my first trip through The Hold Steady's album, so I'll get back to you on that one. (UPDATE: At first listen, they kind of get on my nerves, mostly due to the constant drinking/drug references and the speak/sing drawl that the lead singer utilizes. I felt similar about the Drive-By Truckers, which is why I haven't gone back to fully digest their album yet.)

And I know I'm kind of late on this, but I really, really like The Decemberists' new album. It's most definitely going to end up in my top 10 of 2006.

The Police: "I Burn For You" (a haunting b-side from the Synchronicity era)
Steely Dan: "Doctor Wu"
The Ramones: "Somebody Put Something In My Drink"

I've currently giving Tom Petty's Highway Companion a try, since it was recommended to me by Thom Daugherty of The Elms, and I enjoyed his previous recommendation, which was Matisyahu's Youth. Obviously this is a totally different genre. Petty is an established artist who I never got into before, so we'll see how this goes.

Yessss.

Don't get too excited. Those guys are supremely talented but they spend an awful lot of time making "music about music", which is one of my pet peeves about rap as a genre. Stop bragging about how good/educational/humanitarian/lucrative the music is that you're gonna make, and just make the music that speaks for itself; we'll provide the buzz for you. "Glam Ra" really amused me with its various references to rock and pop music, but at the same time, it kind of pissed me off because they spent the whole song slagging anyone who ever tried to combine rap with another genre, so they just came off as purist snobs with that one. I get that some people are just using it as a sellout tactic to make crowds cheer, and that makes it more difficult for underground artists who are true artists to get exposure, but you know, if you're not doing it just to win over huge crowds, then just accept the fact that you're underground and the fans you find are the ones who appreciate your niche, and stop bitching about it.

I'm listening to "If You Find Her" by Future of Forestry.  It could be my favorite song from Twilight.

That song is especially poignant in light of Eric's divorce.

"Glam Rap" was the one song on the album that gave me pause as well, but I've always seen the song as an indictment against kind of mainstream rap that dominates the industry.

Judging by the song, I think I disagree with Mars Ill in that I don't think it's always a bad thing.  In fact, I'll take Nas's Illmatic or OutKast's Aquemini, or even a few rap albums from last year (from Subtle and the Roots) over Pro Pain myself.

Correct - it's more about "artists" like $0.50.  Hey, even manChild says that compared to 50 Cent, he's just shy of 5 grand.

If it's an issue of content then I can understand, but they made it more of a genre issue. It just sounded like a lot of bitter whining about how their favorite style of music isn't everyone else's. A lot of people like poppy, catchy music. Some rap-influenced artists like to mix styles. Deal with it.

Judging by the song, I think I disagree with Mars Ill in that I don't think it's always a bad thing.  In fact, I'll take Nas's Illmatic or OutKast's Aquemini, or even a few rap albums from last year (from Subtle and the Roots) over Pro Pain myself.

If Mars Ill achieved the kind of popularity they clearly wanted, they'd be "mainstream" by definition, even if they didn't change their style. Then other underground artists who think they're cooler than that would diss them for it.

I thought it was largely an issue they have with content.  I'll listen to the song again, but that's what I got out of that song, and some of the liner notes.

Anyway, though, it's not something I can understand easily myself regardless.  I prefer the lyrics of a song to not be about other artists.

I don't mind that so much when the purpose is humor, homage, or a critique of the message those artists are sending to our youth and our culture in general. And that might be part of it. But a big part of it seemed to be "Those guys are sellouts because they mix it with rock or record tunes for you to dance to in the clubs". So?

Hmm - I still think the club music they're dismissing is more in line with 50 cent than Linkin Park, but I could be wrong.  Again, though, I don't even like hearing about such things as an intelligent critique in my music.  Do what you do well if you want to convince me that I shouldn't bother with those other guys.

Besides that, I would think that such a message would be hypocritical on that album.  It's not like it's the ultimate rap-purist album.
