I think I tried it once, but all it got me was trouble. (I think I used the wrong fluid.)

Shelfari looks similar to another service I remember seeing (though I don't remember the name of it offhand). Lately the " Library 2.0" services have been taking off.

I saw that in Hastings the other day and wondered what it was about. It looked fairly interesting.

I liked it better than his other football book, Bleachers. Even though I keep up with all his detours, I'm always anxious for him to get back to legal thrillers. But I rather liked this one.

That's a pretty good haul for a garage sale. Winnie the Pooh is great, and I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan. The Hound of the Baskervilles is especially good.

Yeah, I think I first read the Hound when I was maybe ten or eleven. I stated up way late to finish and then had nightmares for a week. Good reading The best part of that haul was that all of the books cost $1, exept Winnie the Pooh which was $2 because they got it from England. There were more books too but not as good. AND. I forgot before but we also got most of the Mr. Men collection. My 8yr old sister is reading them now, the only thing she will read other than Dick and Jane.

Went to the library today, and got: Scatterbrain - Larry Niven Niven is hit-or-miss for me, but I love short stories and enjoy science fiction. A Wizard of Earthsea - Ursula K. LeGuin I'm not a big fantasy fan (outside of LotR, of course), but LeGuin is a fantastic writer, so I'm willing to give it a go. Zakennayo! - The real Japanese you were never taught in school - Philip Cunningham Part of my ongoing effort to achieve Japanese fluency. I have noticed from watching more Japanese-language stuff on the teevee and listening to Japanese music that a lot of the colloquialisms that are used bear as much resemblance to the formal Japanese I am familiar with as what you might hear on the streets of New York does to the English used four hundred years ago. That was a really long sentence for a pretty weak analogy, so if you didn't read it then I completely understand. Hacking RSS and Atom - Leslie M. Orchard I'm not OK with using the word 'Hacking' to sex up what would otherwise be a pretty boring title. However, the table of contents does make it look like this book covers feed aggregation and generation in fairly minute detail, which is what I want. It was published in '05, meaning that it's a toss-up as to whether it has useful information on Atom 1.0, but even Atom 0.3 stuff should be useful.
As a side note, the West-side Wake County Public Library is a fantastically nice building with rows and rows of modern-looking computers and free wireless access, but their book selection is utter pants. Still, it seems like a nice place to hang out, and it's in Cary (which means wide roads with ample sidewalks, which means that biking there is a real possibility, since it's only like six or seven miles away).

IMO they're not TEH INSTANT WIN the way some people portray the series to be, but especially the first one is acceptably decent. When I was a young lad I read A Wrinkle in Time and loved it, A Wind at the Door and thought it was OK, and about half of A Swiftly Tilting Planet before I got fed up and moved on to better things (this also, interestingly, accurately describes my experience with C.S. Lewis' own attempt at science fiction). As an adult I decided to give it another go, so I read A Wrinkle in Time again, and while it wasn't heinous, I didn't feel as though I had undervalued it the first time through. I didn't bother with the others.

Found a used bookstore down in Cary. Picked up the following for a great price: Bicycling Magazine's Basic Maintenance and Repair Walden - Thoreau Frankenstein - Shelley
The first because I like to pretend to be a hardcore cyclist by tinkering with my bike, the second because I love Thoreau and his writing and many of his ideas, and the only copy of Walden I had was borrowed from my mom, and the third because my former roommate said it was pretty good.

The Wake County Public Library System (OF DOOM) allows lots of books at a time (I don't know the upper limit), but the checkout period is thirty days. Thirty freaking days. When I was a graduate student, you could check out a book for six months for no problem unless someone else put a hold on it. (Undergrads were only allowed three months). You can renew the books, though I don't know how many renewals you're allowed.
I miss the Virginia Tech library. It was awesome. I realize I'm within driving distance of the NCSU, Duke, and UNC-Chapel Hill libraries, but I have the feeling that as a non-student, checking books out gets involved (if indeed you can do so at all).

The first three books of 'A series of Unfortunate Events', and 'The History of Ancient Israel', actually based on the Bible as well as archaeological findings. Could be very fascinating. It fell out of my bag at my music lesson and the expression on my teachers face was hilarious. I guess its not the kinda thing your average sixteen year old reads I love my library, but the Gympie Library was better.
