I'd love a rock album from jars of clay i stopped listening to them after the second one. it was like jars of clay "self titled" = amazing and then the slow descent into christian radio friendly land.
Heh, my experience has been exactly the opposite. A bunch of my friends who don't listen to anything but radio friendly songs don't like Jars because "their music is weird" and the "lyrics are hard to understand". Yeah. One of my other friends who hates anything poppy and radio friendly really likes Jars of Clay. Coincidence. I guess one example doesn't prove my point, and I agree that a few of Jars' songs could be seen as simply radio friendly ("I Need You", "Show You Love"), but they're no worse than "Love Song for a Savior". Besides, have you heard some of there other songs, such as "Silence", "Lesser Things" or "Jealous Kind". Great, deep songs, and I'm pretty sure they've never been on the radio. Anyway, you have the right to your opinion, but I couldn't disagree more. On another note, I finally got to give Good Monsters a few listens today, and here are some initial thoughts. "Work" is a good opener, not one of the best songs on the album (and I don't think any Jars album opener will ever top Overjoyed in my book anyway) but it does an adequate job drawing the listener in. I only had to hear "Dead Man(Carry Me)" once before it got stuck in my head for an hour. Call me a sap, but I like "Even Angels Cry". "Oh My God" is a pretty song, though I thought Dan's rant at the end was a little too close to "Worlds Apart" for comfort. Getting a "Sad Clown" vibe from "Surprise", which I think murlough also mentioned. "Mirrors & Smoke" flat out rocks, my favorite track as of now. "Light Gives Heat" is a beautiful piece, and probably would've fit in well on Who We Are Instead. "Water Under the Bridge", though not one of my favorites, closes the album out nicely. The two least memorable tracks for me were "There is a River" and the title track, but they're still good songs. Right now, I'll agree with murlough and say its a middle-of-the-road Jars of Clay album, which makes it a really good bordering on great album overall.

i don't know the exact stats, but it seems to me that Jars had about as many 'christian radio friendly' hit songs on that first album as they've had combined since. they've NEVER struck me as 'christian radio friendly,' ever.

Woa woa, sorry to make people upset, i'll word my next replies more carefully, i tend to have controversial opinions. The radio station here K-love (ugh) , has given them a fair amount of airplay. And i do enjoy the newest cd. And if anyone thinks i dont know anything about jars of clay then ok, ill just be quiet about it now.

So that just means they have a few songs that are K-Love friendly. That doesn't mean all their songs are like that. In fact, I'm convinced that radio singles really tell you next to nothing about an artist. IMO, a lot of times the best songs don't even make it to radio. Furthermore, I can name a couple of artists off the top of my head whom I love now, but I avoided at first because my first exposure to them was a sub-par radio song (Jars of Clay, Caedmon's Call, Sixpence None The Richer, just to name a few.)

Actually i haven't only heard their radio singles. I bought their first 3 cd's and then stopped. But the fact that they are on heavy rotation on christian radio makes them christian radio friendly doesn't it?

If you're solely defining the negative aspect of being radio friendly as by how much airplay they get, then sure. Though radio friendly commonly means watered-down lyrics, generic music, whether it gets a lot of airplay or not. I've seen songs be popular that had cryptic, difficult to decipher lyrics and weird music. So in that case, it appears that your definition is flawed. I'm still wondering how all of Much Afraid's singles went to number 1. I mean, Fade to Grey was popular on CHRISTIAN radio? I would have thought it too dark, and Truce is a bit more cryptic than the average radio single. And then, of course, Crazy Times has some odd lyrics. If I Left The Zoo actually lost them fans, I thought, considering how unpopular the album seems to be among casual fans. Mostly because it did not have as many overtly christian themes as the ST or MA. The Eleventh Hour was even LESS overt, losing them a few more fans. WWAI had, what 2 singles, and only Show You Love went anywhere, and I don't know if it was a big hit. Sunny Days flopped as far as I know. Redemption Songs, I think I heard GWLUYH once on the radio and that was it. If anything, by your definition they're becoming less radio friendly with time.

I'm starting to think that I would like to have the song "All My Tears" played at my funeral. (I probably came up with this after realizing that I could no longer fantasize about what songs I'd like to have played at my wedding.)

Funny ... I was thinking the same thing in the car the other day while it was playing. Then I thought how it would go over if someone played "Oh My God" as a feature (like during offering or something)

I was at a resteraunt. I ordered a chicken sandwich, but I don't think the waitress understood me. Cuz she said "how would you like your eggs?". So I tried to answer her anyhow, I said incubated, and then raised, and then beheaded, and then plucked, and then cut up, and then put on a grill, and then put on to a bun. It should only say that before it's been rated favorably by a few registered members (that's to ensure that non-members don't read the crap that some people post). I need to remember to wait a few hours after posting a review before posting the link here; I guess I didn't think anyone here would get to it that quickly.

On a totally random note, Light Gives Heat makes me think of a line from Jeffrey Foucault's song Stripping Cane. Specifically, the line "burning crosses from our fears" from the former makes me think of the line "bleeding ashes from our feet" from the latter.
That is all.

Which, ironically, had absolutely nothing to do with water.
Yes I know but I still thought it was amusing. I've always found it funny that they have "Liquid", "Sinking" and "Flood" all on the same album as well (and yes I know Liquid has nothing to do with water). Okay I'll be quiet now.

Nice review murlough, but I'm...surprised you do not like "Surprise". I felt a humorous sense of irony in the song, especially in the chorus with the 'surprise' being delivered so demurely. I think someone here related it to "Sad Clown", which I totally agree with. It's one of my favorites from the album.
On the other hand, "Oh My God" might be my least favorite song on the album. The first half of the song is gratingly simplistic, the latter half gratingly over-sentimental. Blaaah. Tied to "Even Angels Cry", it's the biggest complaint I have about the album - the lyrics and music become too mushy in a couple places.

And then there are the two "Hot Beverage Songs".
:D Nice! Like I said, a lot of bands have certain words or metaphors that pop up in their songs fairly often. Switchfoot seems to have claimed the sun, while Mae has the rain and the stars (though I think Mae has a song called "The Sun", oh never mind!).

I'm more with Starhawk on "Surprise", I enjoy "Take Me Higher" even though you rightly noted that the chorus is definitely an appeal to emotion rather than one's intelligence (I laughed through that part of the review). That leaves "Even Angels Cry", which I think is a at least growing on me. So, I'm not sure there's a song on the album that I would consider weak.

I posted this joke on the Jarchives board, in reference to the song "Oh My God", but nobody got it. The band has said that this song is actually the first part in a three-song trilogy. The third song in the trilogy will be called "Barbecue". No word yet on the name of the second song.
