Just in case any non-watchers are curious, you can listen to her sing that song here:

I stumbled upon an mp3 blog where one entry had an mp3 from an album by Taylor Hicks. It's actually not too bad, his voice sounds pretty good on the song.

speaking of Taylor. that reminds me that on the show he sang "Dancing In The Dark" he said he was happy to be performing Springsteen for the first time on AI. that actually wasn't true. "Because the Night" is also a Springsteen song, and it has been done more than once. yes, it was made popular by 10,000 Maniacs (AI seldom differentiates between songwriters and performers for some reason) but regardless, it is a Springsteen tune.

as far as tonight's show goes, i have no idea who will win. they are both very good singers. i've actually gotten to where i really like Katherine though, if only slightly more than Taylor. the songs that did it for me on both of them are:

Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Katherine (nobody will ever do that better than Judy Garland, but Katherine at least got close)
Something - Taylor (The Beatles version will always be one of my favorites. but Taylor did well to make it sound like his own instead of karaoke)

interesting that they both have 'some' in the title.

So it looks like Taylor is going to win.  Does he deserve it?  Maybe.  I just can't wait until I never have to hear him say "Soul Patrol" again.

Kat's Rainbow song was the only good one she did. She butchered KT Tunstall and I will never forgive her for that, she just doesn't have the skill to pull it off.

Taylor was actually good tonight, I'm hoping he wins. And since I already know he can pull off pretty good original stuff, it will work out.

Hmph, to each his own, I suppose.  I think she sings that song better than KT Tunstall.

Blasphemy! She fails to have the same edge in her voice that KT has, she can't sound convincingly aggressive.

So? She still sang it well; to say she butchered it is really unfair. It was just different.

Usually different is complimented if it's done well, no?

Taylor won. No surprise there. I live-blogged the entire show, so click over to my blog to read a run-down if you're bored.

If it's done well is the key. It was not done well, it sounded weak and just didn't work. Her voice wasn't strong enough to carry the song, I was cringing the whole time.

Weak?? I think your bias is showing. She sang it superbly (the first time), and even the other Katharine haters that I know acknowledge that.

But to each his own.

Chris's band Absent Element is actually pretty good. Though they have two covers of CCM worship songs. Angus Dei and Indescribable. And others too, weird.

Brenden wasn't talking about just the finale - he said she didn't have "the skill to pull it off."

In reference to that particular song, yes. I didn't watch the other episode with the first performance, but the mp3 didn't impress me at all.
