Maybe I'm way behind on this , but today when I bought my mom a copy of Shaun Groves-Twilight, I got a free "Blur" sampler with it...the Blur sampler is mostly just bland AC stuff I would never listen to, but it did have a new Jars song, "Amazing Grace"... Just wondering if anyone else has heard it, I was quite impressed with it at first listen...

A NEW JARS OF CLAY SONG?
Do you know if it's from their upcoming album, or is it just from some compilation?

Speaking of the new Jars album, I found this little blurb, posted by Dan Haseltine on a Jars messageboard: This record has a couple moments of mild aggression...but it is an acoustic record...I can not confirm nor deny the accusations of a bit of country influence....we do have some pedal steel on this one.
Lets call it Americana....or something like that....California country...meets alt-gospel?
It's Jars all the way. WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO! This one sounds like it could be a real winner. I'm actually starting to look forward to this record quite a bit.

"California country"...I love it.
When you said "blur" sampler, I thought you were talking about the band for a while and then I thought "wait a minute...they never have and probably never will do AC".

Another Dan post on the Jars board claims that they're having trouble finding a song that would work well as a first single on their new album. This is VERY good news for me; I thought their last album had TOO MANY obvious singles...

Yes, it's from their new record, but right beside it, it says "not final master"...
Also, this song features the pedal steel in it...

Mmmm... pedal steel. Always reminds me of Daniel Lanois, particularly his playing on U2's "Running to Stand Still."
And that's a very, very good thing.

I don't think these early reports make it sound like Furthermore... Furthermore was not a country-flavored project, and I don't recall there being any pedal steel on it...

Hey, I'm still willing to go wherever Jars is willing to venture. I don't miss the self-titled Jars much, truth be told. "Much Afraid" is good, for the most part, and "If I Left the Zoo" is at least adventurous for their band musically. I think I'm the only one here who really liked "The Eleventh Hour". I think it's a step up in terms of songwriting even if it is more obvious musically.

If every song was as good as "Silence" then I'd agree with you. But with such bland songs as "Fly," I Need You," and "Revolution," I'm just not seeing that much great songwriting. Add to that the fact that it's Jars' most overpolished, poppy, made-for-radio album yet, and... well... I'm just not a big fan. But then, I like If I Left the Zoo the best, so it's no surprise to me to find myself in the Jars minority. =)

I'm looking more forward to Zoegirl's release.

Hey, country, done right, is cool.
-Wilco was my #1 pick last year, and they are certainly inspired to some degree by country music.
-I went to a bluegrass concert some time ago, which is a relative of country. I don't remember who the band was, but the musicianship was great.
-Radiohead has a cover of "Rhinestone Cowboy". Very funny.
-Over the Rhine employs some techniques commonly associated with country music, and "Ohio" is my #1 pick this year thus far.
-Heck, rock wouldn't exist without country (along with blues and r&b).
-Johnny Cash is still the bomb, yo.

REAL country is great; the pop country that they play on the radio is terrible, and ranks right up there with rap as Music That Must Die.

RE: Rap
-Like most things (including country), the radio stuff usually isn't all that good.
-Don't much like the gangsta stuff unless it's so absurdly hate-filled that it's funny (i.e. "911 is a Joke" and "Fu*k the Police").
-Blackalicious, the Roots, Outkast...all quite good and very progressive (some veering a little toward hip hop, but the lines aren't exactly solid anyway).
-as one of my least listened-to styles of popular music, I have just exhausted all my knowledge about rap in these preceding 3 bullets, affirming my cracker status. =D

Okay, okay... I must admit... both of Lauryn Hill's albums are in my collection, and I listen to them every now and then.
I just think rap songs all sound the same.

Go download "Aquemini" (the song or the album) by Outkast. It doesn't all sound the same...just most of it does.
(A rap fan would probably say the same thing about rock music in his ignorance of the better acts)

Also, there is a group (I believe they are Christians...not sure), that has a similar sound to Blackalicious or the Roots, they are called "The Urban Sophisticates". Cory turned me on to them originally...they are an actual band, playing live instruments much like the Roots, although their sound is more jazzy. Right now, they aren't well known at all, but they do have talent...3 songs of theirs can be found here: http://www.urbansophisticates.com/downloads.html

And then when they do, we can all complain about how now that they've blown up (like firestone on an SUV to quote P-do) they've sold out and their sound is so commercialized, and they should never have signed a deal.
I hate it when people do that. Begrudge someone their success. Although I do hold a grudge against most popstars. But that's just me.

None of us have gotten upset with Switchfoot, have we? Jennifer Knapp? Pedro The Lion?
Earthsuit? Ticklepenny Corner? The Innocence Mission?
Oh wait. Those haven't reached critical mass yet. But I think they will.

A tour with Caedmon's Call again?
Yawn...
By the way... the clips sounds pretty weak. At least there's 11 other songs...
An acoustic-Gospel album?

Hmmm... some of the new Jars song titles look like they COULD be pretty pedestrian CCM stuff (but then again, maybe they won't be). Can't say that I'm too impressed with the first two audio clips, either, though "Trouble Is" sounds promising.

The first two just sounded... well... boring. Pretty tame pop fare. I didn't hear any glimmers of real invention or art. But they're just brief clips, so it's very possible that I'm totally wrong here. At this point, my opinion on the new material is almost totally worthless.

To be fair to jars, I must point out that these 30 second clips can be VERY misleading as to what the actual song will be like. I found this out in a big way with the samples from If I Left the Zoo. Every song came out different than I had envisioned it from the preview clip. Since then, I haven't put to much stock in them.
