Anyone else heard of these guys? I've been listening to their new cd for a while, and I've been blown away. Extremely high level of artistry. Their musicianship is quite good, and the melodies and harmonies are wonderful. The lyrics paint some colorful pictures.
This is shaping up to be the best thing I've heard all year.

I uploaded a couple songs from the album to the Pub. They should give a good idea what the album is like.

Listening to Genessaret right now and I must say I enjoy it a lot. Yet another album I'll have to pick up this year.

I've heard of them! I love their EP A Holiday at the Sea (it's only three songs). But their stuff seems pretty hard to find and goes out-of-print pretty quickly. I think I had to order that one off the net.
Your review is good. Some lines seemed kind of awkward, and maybe the description could have been varied up a little, but my interest is definitely piqued. The Japanese element intrigues me since it's not like anything they've done before.
The thing I remember them most for is polyrhythm; layered drums and forceful harmonies, and also very unconventional song structures. Do they still keep the emphasis on percussion?

Yeah, percussion is very much used throughout the album.

Listening to it now for the first time.. I really like it. I too had never heard of them before.. but I've liked what I've heard so far.
Could anybody paste the pitchfork review here? I am having trouble getting it to load for some reason..

I was at a resteraunt. I ordered a chicken sandwich, but I don't think the waitress understood me. Cuz she said "how would you like your eggs?". So I tried to answer her anyhow, I said incubated, and then raised, and then beheaded, and then plucked, and then cut up, and then put on a grill, and then put on to a bun. Damn, it's gonna take a while! I don't have time - scrambled! -- Mitch Hedberg

I'm not getting the comparison of "Chicago" with "A Great Wind More Ash".
I think the reviewer was just digging for something to complain about.

That's what Pitchfork is best at doing.

Maybe I should take a road trip out to see them in Buffalo, it's only a three hour drive.

Man I wish I could drive... Charlottesville is only like 50 minutes from here. I might have to try to convert my Dad into an Anathallo fan..

Too bad I have to work that night or I'd drop over to Buffalo too. I'm 40 minutes from there.

OK, after you guys have been talking about this band for close to a year, with me not realizing the many intriguing elements that should have made them an obvious band for me to check them out, I'm finally gonna give 'em a listen. I've downloaded Floating World and it's waiting in the wings. I'll be sure to let y'all know what I think, since I'm sure some of you thought this one would be right up my alley, and I somehow managed to totally ignore it.

Update: This album is now right outside the Top 20 on my 2006 Music Journal. I'm easily impressed by the multi-instrumentalism, the complex rhythms and overlapping vocals, and I share their fetish for Japanese things. My only real complaint is that the album gets a bit cumbersome and even chaotic at times - it feels like it self-consciously changes up the rhythm or mood just because it can, rather than because it serves the song. I also question whether presenting the "Hansakajijii" story out of order really helps the narrative. But those complaints may disappear as I listen further. It's a fascinating piece of work, and I'm glad you guys recommended it to me.
