Interesting Beatles list, danny. You ranked Please Please Me and Let it Be over The Beatles, which surprised me (especially since LiB is so widely regarded negatively due to its production flourishes).
Yeah, I'm pretty harsh on the self-titled one. We've duked that out pretty well here though, between the Beatles threads here before I got into them and my own comments in the Second Guess the Critic game. I have a really hard time taking such a wildly consistent and indulgent album seriously as a favorite - sure, I know that they couldn't have planned to make it fit on one CD, but still, I think some similar pruning effort was definitely needed there. Had it been one disc with just the classics on it, I might consider it a favorite instead of a hit-or-miss mess. Let It Be was pretty decent, if you ask me. The songs on it are pretty strong, and I don't really have a problem with the production. If Paul hates it, that's his problem - I kind of like how it came out. It's too bad though that they never officially released the title track as they had originally planned - apparently the guitar solo on the album and the guitar solo on the single were played at the same time, but then not mixed together in the end. It would have been cool to hear them try the whole dueling-solos thing. I think I might be overrating Please Please Me though. The challenge of rating the early albums is fun, but it's hard to place them appropriately - they're really not all that different from each other, to modern ears, anyway. Please Please Me had some classics, and it's "important" in the sense that it really triggered Beatlemania. I don't think I would complain about ranking it lower though, and on a different day, I might have. There's a lot to take in on their albums, so even the top of my list changes violently sometimes. ...of course, for added fun, I've only heard the CD versions. I'd imagine anyone in America listening to the LPs would think I had heard some of 'em "wrong". Then there's all those audiophiles that argue that the remastering was never really done right, and that some stuff on the albums doesn't sound like it should... I'd like to comment on the minor landmarks thing - I think most of the minor ones should count as "great" on some level. The problem with minor landmarks is that they tend to work towards peoples' tastes. I'd say that the Prayer Chain's "Mercury" is nothing more than a minor CCM landmark, but the "Christian indie" crowd always gives it an A instead of the B it deserves because it's more to their tastes, and it is a highlight in that scene. In a way, I almost think it's better to be on the outside of most music "scene"s like that so that we can be more objective about what comes out of them - while still recognizing when something is a landmark of a scene. It's great when a well-known, mainstream group does something noteworthy, but it's worth recognizing the overrated seminal acts too. Oh, and on the topic of dc Talk, I think a few of their songs approach the masterpiece level. I have a minor lyrical nitpick with "What If I Stumble" (it should say "when" and not "if" somewhere...), but otherwise, I'd say that the spoken word part and the mandolin/accordian interplay push that song near the top. The overall theme and instrumentation on that were great if you ask me.

So is any landmark avant-garde indie album, but that doesn't stop you. I would disagree in some cases. Some of yesterday's avant-garde indie albums are highly influential on much more mainstream bands today. They say The Velvet Underground didn' t reach many when they were around, but their influence on many modern artists is profound. Look, I don't really care about the size of the audience that was reached. It got an extremely stiff-necked and highly biased crowd to accept a style that they had previously, for the most part, snubbed. It's not the first Christian rap album, it's not the only notable Christian rap album of its era - heck, it's not even completely a rap album. But it accomplished something that was difficult to accomplish.
That alone isn't enough to get the album up to a B- ... I gave it a B- because I still like a majority of the songs, despite really cheesy and embarassing tracks like the title track and "I Don't Want It". The remakes are inventive, the hybrid genres are a lot of fun, and as cheesy as they may be, I actually think a lot of the lyrics are clever. I mean, it was 1992; we have to consider this in context. I have to take it in context, also. That's part of the problem: the context I take it in is pretty wide. Not for Jesus Freak and Supernatural. I loved Jesus Freak before I realized how important that album was gonna end up being. I thought it would be too weird for Christian radio to really get behind, to be honest - turns out every single song became a single (and most of them big hits). OK, pleasant surprise. Supernatural is actually widely regarded as a bit of a disappointment following Jesus Freak. It wasn't as popular, even if a lot of people bought it. Most dc Talk fans would probably not say it's better than Jesus Freak. For me, it's the simple matter that I love every song, I love the largely unpredictable way in which they're constructed and the three guys collaborate (on past albums it was mostly Toby doing the writing), and the way they play off of each other vocally and melodically. That's one hell of a surprising album to come from what was formerly a hip-pop group. I find the songs on Jesus Freak to be a tad more predictable musically. Given what was going on outside, I don't see how someone wouldn't pick up on making a single like "Jesus Freak" itself, for example. The vocals are very good, though (except for the one song where they aren't on purpose), and the melodies are very memorable. Your definition of "masterpiece" has to do more with genre redefining. While I too would expect something unexpected in terms of an album qualifying for a "masterpiece", I'm fine just leaving it at solid songwriting and solid musicianship and not having a weak track on the album (or, if there are one or two slightly weaker tracks, having so many other awesome songs that it makes up for it). I think I demand both a fair level of consistency and a very high level of genre refinement or, preferably, redefinition to apply the term. Otherwise, the word becomes meaningless to me. Much Afraid is an excellent album. Even if I wouldn't pin it with that "m" label, that's pretty darn good. I agree that it's inconsistent (I'm pretty sure that's what you mean), but it's highlights are good enough that I'd put it ahead of any of their earlier albums. I suppose I also enjoy the double album as what it is - something to be picked through. There are very few double albums that work the same way that single discs do (there may even be none), so I take them a little differently. While the standard complaint about double albums applies here, I can't say I mind weeding through some of those kinds of albums. Anyway, I wasn't saying you were wrong. Just interesting based on the way I've seen others rank them. 1 Innervisions 2 Songs in the Key of Life 3 Talking Book 4 Music of My Mind 5 Hotter than July 1 Master of Puppets 2 . . . And Justice for All 3 Metallica 4 Ride the Lightning 5 Kill 'Em All 1 Daydream Nation 2 Sister 3 Evol 4 Washing Machine (goodness, if all of this were as good as "The Diamond Sea" would it ever be high) 5 Murray Street 6 Dirty 7 Sonic Nurse 8 Goo 9 A Thousand Leaves 10 NYC Ghosts and Flowers (I'm missing several here, and #4-9 are immeasurably close. They're that consistent. Also of note: I'm not sure where to put Rather Ripped yet. Also, I didn't pick the weirdest for the top spot - HA!) 1 Whatever and Ever Amen 2 The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner 3 Ben Folds Five speaking of Folds: 1 Rockin' the Suburbs 2 Songs for Silverman and, for an obvious one: 1 Loveless 2 Isn't Anything I need to beef up my Wildcatblue signature collection (The Police, The Who, Led Zeppelin, etc.) to rank those with confidence.

I'll post my Stevie Wonder list since bloop did. 1. Innervisions A+ 2. Songs in the Key of Life A 3. Talking Book A 4. Fullfillingness' First Finale A- 5. Music of My Mind A- 6. Hotter Than July B+ I could list a few more, but they're all really minor. And 4 and 5 could be swapped for me, I guess, but I put FFF, because he was definitely a better songwriter at this point. And I just put up those grades, but I've never really thought through them--I don't normally assign grades to albums. Sufjan Stevens 1. Michigan 2. Seven Swans 3. Illinois 4. Enjoy Your Rabbit 5. A Sun Came! Here, I think I listen to 5 more, but recently I've come to appreciate 4 more, and EYR is probably the better album. I didn't do grades, because I'd probably be shot, and I'm a bit of a fanboy, so they might be titled upwards a bit. (I put M and SS on top, because sonically speaking they are more groundbreaking, Ill falls into orchestral pop which has been done before.) Rich Mullins (for something different and those who care) 1. The World as Best as I Remember it Vol. 1 A 2. A Liturgy, A Legacy, and a Ragamuffin Band A 3. The Jesus Demos A 4. Winds of Heaven...Stuff of Earth B+ 5. The World as Best as I Remember it Vol. 2 B 6. Brother's Keeper B 7. Never Picture Perfect C+ I don't know, I think much of Mullins' stuff is really beautiful and worth the masterpiece label, despite his existence within CCM. Sure, he has some cheesy songs (however as he continued in his career they became farther and fewer in between), and darn it, the Jesus album would've been his best to date. It just got #3 because I don't think it deserves a higher place since it was all done on a tape recorder and wasn't fully realized. The songs are very strong though. Just my two cents.

7,768. Octavarium (the more I hear it, the less I like it) O RLY? I thought you rather enjoyed that album. I love the majority of it; "THe Answer Lies Within" and "I Walk Beside You" are subpar, and maybe the alcoholism saga is getting a little old, but I still think over half the album kicks booty.

(it had to be done) YA, RLY. I did enjoy it when I wrote my review, but my opinion went the other way shortly after I posted it. So it goes.

Hmm. Good question. I suppose the two craptacular songs you mentioned got worse with more plays; the first half of the album is just so weak. My initial liking cooled quite a bit, I suppose because of the presence of intense instrumental wankery on 8v. The song Octavarium is still quite good, but they have other epics that are stronger (A Change of Seasons, for instance).

What?!? No Beatles list from Afro? This must not be the real oneafroboy.
bloop: yeah, I meant inconsistent. Gosh, that's a misleading typo...
Wildcat, I disagree with you on the Who. Next has nothing on Quadrophenia. I can't speak for their others, but I'd be pretty surprised if they could top an album as amazing as Quadrophenia. I get the impression that most people love Next just because it had some of the biggest hit singles on it. If you ask me, the deep cuts on the double album are better songs than those "classics", easily.

I love Next and Quadrophenia; most days I'd say the latter has the edge, but Next is just so powerful all the way from Baba O'Riley through the original end with Won't Get Fooled Again. However, I would tend to agree that Quadrophenia is very sadly overlooked by most people. The Bell Boy-Doctor Jimmy-The Rock-Love, Reign O'er Me sequence is breathtaking every time I hear it.

No, it's me danny. I just didn't feel like ranking them. It would take too much brainwork. But let's see..
1. Sgt. Pepper A+ 2. Revovler A+ 3. Abbey Road A 4. White A- 5. Rubber Soul A- 6. Magical Mystery Tour B+ 7. Let it Be B+ 8. Help! B- 9. With the Beatles 10. A Hard Day's Night 11. Please Please Me 12. Beatles for Sale
I didn't assign grades to the last four, their first four records, but they'd probably be in the Cs and Ds.
OTR 1. Ohio 2. Films for Radio 3. Drunkard's Prayer 4. Good Dog Bad Dog 5. Eve
3 and 4 are close and maybe should be switched. And yeah, I think FFR was *that* strong of an album.
Yes, I'm late, but whatever. Radiohead 1. Kid A 2. Amnesiac 3. HTTT 4. OKC 5. The Bends 6. Pablo Honey
OKC is a better album than HTTT, but I like HTTT over OKC (and I'm just ranking them based on preference), and I can't remember what we're doing exactly anyway. And the first four are all so close anyway, it's like picking your favorite kind of chocolate cake.

I was inspired by the FFH discussion in the Artists You've Disowned thread...if anyone is qualified to make this list, it should be the person who listened to all of these albums 9 million and one times each.
1. Have I Ever Told You C- 2. I Want to be Like You C- 3. Ready to Fly D 4. Found a Place F
I jumped ship in early 2002 before Ready to Fly released, but I downloaded it to make fun of it (and write an Epinions review) right after it released. I give Have I Ever Told You the edge merely before the title track is the only thing remotely resembling real creative catharsis. (And oddly enough, or not, their least straightword lyrically. Well, it's straightforward, but not concerned with evangelism, or so it might seem until a couple of lines near the end that Jeromy Deibler just had to get in.)
I'm not sure I could be persuaded to listen to Still the Cross or Voice from Home - especially the latter - unless it was under threat of death. And even then, maybe not.

I'm liking reading your lists, ewok. I'm on board with Tom's choices for The White Stripes. Tool 1. Aenima 2. Lateralus 3. 10,000 Days 4. Undertow
huh. Interesting. You don't usually get that listed as #1 on a Christian messageboard. I love that one too. Staind 1. Break The Cycle 2. 14 Shades of Grey 3. Dysfunction 4. Chapter V I've always wondered what the appeal of this band is. Incubus 1. Make Yourself 2. Morning View 3. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. 4. A Crow Left of The Murder HERESY! heh. I take it I like Morning View somewhat more than you do, and Crow much more than you do? Linkin Park 1. Hybrid Theory 2. Meteora 3. Collision Course 4. ReAnimation Yeah, I picked Collision Course as their best so far. Maybe my somewhat guilty love for Jay-Z is showing, but, hey, it's like they suddenly found someone with a little bit of flow and tonal variance. Metallica . . . 9. St. Anger No love for St. Anger I see. I'm with you. Stone Temple Pilots 1. Purple 2. Core 3. Tiny Music 4. Shangra La Di Da 5. No. 4 No. 4 is the only album of theirs I actually own. It was cheap, but anyway, I hardly listen to it.

Stone Temple Pilots (i haven't listened to them in ages, but they were a pretty good rock band. i'd say a cut above many rock bands of their time period. it is hard to believe that when they first came out people thought they were a Pearl Jam clone. Purple rocks in every respect.)

Starflyer 59
1. Leave Here A Stranger 2. Old 3. Talking Voice Vs. Singing Voice 4. Silver 5. Everybody Makes Mistakes 6. The Fashion Focus 7. I Am the Portuguese Blues 8. Gold 9. Americana
Lifehouse 1. Stanley Climbfall ... ... ... 2. No Name Face ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... 3. Lifehouse
Metallica (of the albums i have heard)
1. And Justice For All 2. Metallica (Black Album) 3. Master of Puppets ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... 4. St. Anger ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... 5. Load & Re-Load (are both equally horrible)

I can't even begin to describe how much I loathe this band, even when (especially when?) they do enough self-loathing for the both of us. I really like your SOAD list. I'm not sure how I'd rank them other than put Toxicity at the top.
