That's pretty quick - one has to wonder if they had to make another one quickly because Nothing Is Sound didn't do as well as they'd hoped. Honestly, if anything hampered that album's sales, it was all of the brouhaha over copy protection. Anyway, here's hoping that this new one is good, doesn't feel rushed, and explores some different themes.

Well, according to that MTV link, Jon Foreman said the band wants to explore some more experimental sounds on the new album, so maybe that'll seep into the lyrics as well.

I have a new song from the upcoming album, so I'll pub that, but I haven't listened to it yet.
Anyway, I've heard things about this album like Jon plays the sitar on one track, and they collaborated with Nickel Creek for a song called Betrayal.

The source for the sitar is a podcast where he played a new song and he played sitar in the song. As for Nickel Creek, that's from an interview. I'm opimistic about this album.

I was bored with 1-2, 8-11. Overall, a mediocre album. Nothing was exceptional about it except for "Easier Than Love", IMO

I'm not sure I'd go so far as "exceptional", and I don't see myself returning to Nothing is Sound much, but it was a solid album.
Still waiting for a Switchfoot masterpiece, though. I'm optimistic that they have it in them.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as "exceptional", and I don't see myself returning to Nothing is Sound much, but it was a solid album. It all comes down to which songs you prefer more, and since we're comparing excellent songs to excellent songs, I'm not bothered by someone liking another album more. (Though I'm a bit baffled by the fact that someone could put New Way to Be Human on top - that album feels to me like it skimped on content and kind of ping-ponged back and forth between its fast songs and its slow songs - in general, it didn't flow well, even if it contains several Switchfoot classics.) Song-for-song, I think Nothing Is Sound opens the strongest. I adore the first five tracks, really like 6 and 7, and I love 12 as well. The Beauitful Letdown still beats it overall, but that's only because Nothing Is Sound gets a little too repetitive/pedestrian in its back half. Learning to Breathe would rate higher with me if I didn't find "Innocence Again", "The Economy of Mercy" and "Erosion" to be fairly uninteresting, and The Legend of Chin would rate higher with me if not for "Concrete Girl" and "You" bringing everything to a screeching halt, and a few other songs feeling slightly incomplete.

Yeah, and it totally was, like, last year. I guess people here really don't follow Switchfoot... But fine, here's a link to the video of Sean and Sarah of Nickel Creek performing with Switchfoot - in what Chad called the highlight of their entire tour: http://youtube.com/watch?v=mmJqX2qhvJE

With the news of a Nickel Creek collaboration, and a promise of a more experimental sound, I'm more excited for this one than I have ever been for a Switchfoot album.

Me too! (I don't think I've heard a single song from Nothing is Sound, actually...) You really should remedy that. Despite all olf the negative press it got for not being mystifyingly different than everything Switchfoot had ever done before, I think it's a solid and well thought-out disc, for the most part. You might feel differently if a meatier rock sound doesn't grab your attention like it does mine... but I know you used to really love this band, so I'm hoping you'll still have a soft spot for them.

I do still have a soft spot for them, and I actually still like a lot of their songs. I'm sure I'd find something of interest on Nothing is Sound; hopefully my library will get a copy in at some point...

Given what I regularly see on your library check out list on here, I'm surprised they don't have it by now. Their collection seems very large and diverse.
I saw a vinyl of it at the local record store for $7. I was pretty tempted.

It's a free country. I just wanted to know why.
Switchfoot themselves would tell you straight off that it's not their best work too.

Quite right. Weezer distanced themselves from Pinkerton for a long time. It seems like at least a few bands take a fairweather fan attitude toward their own music.

I personally don't think artists are the final authority on their own work anyway.

True. Otherwise every new U2 album would be their best album (or, in some cases, their earlier albums would cease to exist altogether).

I'm enjoying the new song, it took a few listens to really grow on me, but I like it. Evean though it's not radically different for the band, it still manages to be interesting.

I think that's actually what I liked about it. I didn't see it as not flowing well, I saw it as being a little more diverse. I can see where you're coming from, though. I just saw it as more diverse as opposed to having an uneven flow.

As opposed to Pearl Jam's first record, which has an even flow.

Nothing is Sound is weird for me, because I rarely go back and listen to it, but when I do I always wonder why I haven't been listening more...
Kind of like Thrice's Vhiessu.
Anyways, I'm excited for the new album. I heard an acoustic version of a song called "Oh, Gravity" and fell in love.

I am sort of the opposite. I've been a Switchfoot fan since the beginning but I just can't get into Nothing is Sound and I really have no desire to pop it into my cd player unless I didn't want to listen to any of the 300+ other cds I have. I am interested in what the new record will contain. I hope it's more consistent and better quality than NiS.

Yeah.. like I said at CMC, I'm psyched for the new album. I've been sorta "meh" about Switchfoot in the past, but I absolutely love Dirty Second Hands (I've played it almost 20 times since yesterday) and the clip of Oh! Gravity just seals the deal.
Woohoo.

As much of a fan I've been (except for NIS which I will never purchase), I'm not feeling DSH or the clip of Oh! Gravity. Perhaps a full album will convince me..
