So, after weeks of apathy and indifference, punctuated by sporadic bouts of mild curiosity, I tried one of those new fresceta sandwiches at Wendy's. Ham and swiss, to be exact. It wasn't bad. It was a tasty enough sandwich. But it's still nothing more than a poor man's Market Fresh sandwich; when it comes to fast food that tastes like real food, Arby's is still the champ.

Also tried a Coke Blak. Coca cola and coffee, fused together. Too highly addictive substances in one bottle-- nice move, Coke! It took some getting used to, but I really enjoyed it, probably because of that whole addiction thing. It kinda reminded me of that episode of Seinfeld in which George wants to mix the two things he loves most in life, food and sex; Coke has combined too glorious and intoxicating substances that were probably never meant to go together, and the results are decadent and delightful.

yay, a food thread!

Coke Blak sounds horrendous but my curiousity is even more piqued now. I just bought a bottle of the cherry lime Sunkist but haven't tried it yet.

recently I felt like being more Californian and tried some California rolls. pretty good. there was another kind of roll I tried and liked. I still have a hard time thinking of such sushi-ish things as "rolls"--to me rolls are bread.

I felt cheated when I realized that Coke Blak had fake sugar in it.  I thought I detected the odd aftertaste thereof.  Anyway, it was decent...I think it would have been better with real sugar.

I was making pancakes last night and made a mistake.  I put in 1 tablesthingy of vanilla instead of 1 teasthingy.  They turned out better than usual, so I suppose I'll stick to it.

I've never really thought of California rolls as "Californian"-- in my experience it's kind of the cliche sushi, the one that people get when they don't know much about sushi or can't decide what to get. Nothin' wrong with that, though, as they happen to be delicious.

My favorite sushi: Shrimp Tempura rolls, Philly rolls, and avacado rolls. Yummy!

Those Frescata sandwiches at Wendys are horrid, mostly because of the bread.

I have to say, as a fast food junkie and someone who basically has no other options but Wendy's, McDonalds, and Sonic most days, I am repulsed by the fresceta sandwiches. I love me a good Wendy's baked potato, though. Wendy's is definitely the most affordable fast food restaurant and also has the most options. McDonalds has the best location for me but the least variety. Sonic is least affordable and plus you have to tip them and wait a year. Hardees is out because I don't like charbroiled burgers; however, I do enjoy their 99 cent ham and cheese sandwiches.

I almost never eat out--maybe Subway once a month and ordering a pizza occasionally when my roommate and I are both feeling way lazy, but I generally make two meals a day (I eat breakfast too, but pouring a bowl of cereal doesn't really count as 'making').

haha, yeah, I dunno that California rolls are especially Californian, but I was never really one to even try sushi, but "everybody else" here eats it. I still won't try the ones with raw fish. I don't care what people say.

I was craving Wendy's baked potato the other day but all I had was a leftover plain baked potato. very sad. still haven't gotten onion rings like I wanted over the weekend.

Unlike beef (hello, e. coli) or chicken (hi there, salmonella), fish is unlikely to have any particularly ill-effects if you eat it raw. I think in America we just get "meat must be cooked" drilled into us from day 1, so the thought of raw meat just seems unappealing from a cultural standpoint (and admittedly most raw meat doesn't score particularly high on the visually appealing scale, though again that might just be cultural conditioning).

I heard that in some Scandinavian country (Iceland? Finland?) they eat some sort of raw meat--I want to say lamb, but it's been a while so I'm no doubt wrong. Honestly, most food is more about preparation and seasoning than about the particular main ingredient just taken in a vacuum.

Then again, I haven't eaten raw anything lately myself, so maybe I'm just being ornery like usual Smiley.

Raw fish sushi -- nigiri -- and plain raw fish -- sashimi -- might take some getting used to, but they can really be quite delicious. More than any other way of preparing the fish, they let the fish's inherent flavors really stand out. Fatty fishes like yellowtail are amazing; buttery, creamy, and not fishy like you might expect.

You're forgiven - it's just your caffeine withdrawal kicking in.

I don't mind the raw fish.  I really enjoy rare seared tuna, and I would eat it raw...not much difference between raw and rare, though.  It's just that freakin' seaweed!

I can take or leave seaweed. It has little distinctive taste, so while it's not repellant, it's not particularly enjoyable either. A good cook can season it and bring out some of its flavor, but in the end it's still just a delivery mechanism.

I agree that the seaweed in the sushi doesn't have that strong of a taste, but man, have you ever sat next to someone munching on dried seaweed? it reeks. well, I find the smell to be very strong and repellent, anyway.

it's the idea of the raw fish that gets me. the times I've tried something that initially sounded gross but someone claimed it was very delicious, well, it wasn't really worth it, so I really don't care if I'm supposedly missing out. more for others to enjoy.

a co-worker visited Japan awhile back and ate a fish that was still alive when it was cut up. he took a video of it flopping, all cut up and staring, on the serving plate in front of them. I wouldn't be able to eat. I don't care how yummy it is or how many thousands of years Japanese have been doing this.

I've been waiting for Vlad! to correct you, but he hasn't, and it's driving me nuts, so I'll point it out: "too" and "two" are not interchangeable. And I assume you meant "two" when you used the word "too" twice in the last paragraph...unless you meant that Coke and coffee are overly highly addictive and overly glorious and intoxicating. Smiley

finally tracked down some Coke Blak late last night at Albertsons. tried it just now. kind of funny. too expensive to make it a habit, but it's a nice little treat. I want to find out how much caffeine is in it compared to regular cola or coffee. also, I wonder if you can get the same sort of flavor by mixing cola with some sort of coffee flavoring. syrup or just plain coffee. that might be as gross as it sounds though.

Egh, Coke Blak. Even if it weren't for the fact that after the hell that was my caffeine withdrawal I have no desire to put any of that in my body ever again, the very concept sounds mildly nauseating. Of course, I just recently found out that some people actually don't like watermelon, something that I previously thought to be inconceivable, so I guess maybe there are those born with taste buds in a totally different configuration from me.

I keep a bag of carrots in the fridge for when I get the urge to snack, but recently I've been obliterating their healthiness by dipping them in peanut butter :9. Peanut butter is at least in the top five for best foods ever, but it's not so hot healthwise so I keep it as a guilty pleasure now and again.

carrots dipped in pb?! I never would have thought of that combo. sounds almost as weird as coke and coffee.

I like watermelon but hate watermelon-flavored or watermelon-scented things. doesn't even seem very watermelony.

I don't like watermelon. I find it bland. I've tried it on multiple occasions, and each time I didn't like it.

That carrots-dipped-in-peanut-butter sounds good, though.

In order to truly appreciate watermelon, you have to make sure that you have a good melon and that it's in season. If you have a crappy one and/or if it is not in season, it will taste like, well, water. It's certainly not as sweet or powerful as a lot of the artificially-sweetend crap that you see on store shelves, but a large, ripe, flavorful watermelon is truly divine.

Amen! As for Coke Blak, Bleach. I had a sample at Kroger one day, but I didn't realize it was COke Blak. I just saw the sample table and thought, "Oh wow, Coke samples." So I grabbed one, shot it down, then almost spit it back up. Of course, I don't like coffee to begin with, so this was just awful.

I have never salted watermelon. Of course, this also means that I have never tasted watermelon with salt on it. My gut instinct says that salting a watermelon will change its taste for the worse, but with food I'm a lot more "don't knock it until I've tried it" than I am in some other areas of life (and yes, I know this conflicts with some of my previous statements. I stand by my hypocricy).

salt on watermelon = evil
salt on apples = evil
salt on pears = evil

what's with people salting perfectly good fruits and rendering them evil? blech.

My family loves Red Lobster, and for years I've always ordered the same thing there-- the crab-stuffed flounder, which I maintain is some of the best seafood money can buy. Unless you're on the coast.

Last night, though, something got into me and made me try something new. I ended up getting the Salmon New Orleans. And it was heavenly.

Recent discoveries:

-- Jess is correct; the strawberry yogurt at Wendy's is indeed good. I also dearly love the Butterfinger fix-and-mix frosty, though I'm not sure how I feel about them offering vanilla frosties. That seems, well, un-frosty-like.

-- The new Pepsi Jazz-- with cherry and French vanilla-- is, surprisingly, very, very good. And I say that as someone who despises Pepsi and generally finds all these multi-flavored soft drinks to be rather disgusting.

-- The Nacho Crunch burrito at Taco Bell is probably the best thing they have there. It's pretty much the coolest.

How is a vanilla frosty (frostie?) a contradiction? I am under the impression that it is, essentially, soft-serve ice-cream in a cup.

noooo, it can only be the original Wendy's frosty (frostie?) or nothing. it's not just soft serve ice cream in a cup. the texture is different. more icy than creamy. and it's not too chocolatey. it may even be a little bit malty but I don't know if they actually put malt in it or not. the frosty is the frosty! it can't be vanilla! that would be, like, anti-frosty! or un-frosty! a frosty with something essential sucked out of it!

might taste good though. but it wouldn't be a frosty.

I think a vanilla frosty sounds delicious! They don't have to call it a frosty. They could in fact call in the anti-frosty and I would still try it.

I recently discovered that Hardee's has the best milkshakes on the planet. They're completely delightful and heavenly.

Has anyone tried the new snack wrap at McDonald's? I thought about it but changed my mind.

after thinking about it some more, if they did indeed call it the anti-frosty, I would probably go out right now and get one.

are the Hardee's shakes super thick? McD's are so thick that they just about make me choke. In-N-Out's shakes are very thick, too, like softened icecream. which is pretty good (unlike McD's, which just tastes artificially thick), but I like shakes that aren't so gaggingly thick.

I, too, thought about trying the snack wrap but changed my mind.
