OK - so I heard a song by Over the Rhine and fell in love with it. What is a good album to start with with this group?

I'd recommend Ohio. All of them are good though.

I was at a resteraunt. I ordered a chicken sandwich, but I don't think the waitress understood me. Cuz she said "how would you like your eggs?". So I tried to answer her anyhow, I said incubated, and then raised, and then beheaded, and then plucked, and then cut up, and then put on a grill, and then put on to a bun. I second that recommendation. With the double album, you get the full range of their sound. Enjoy!

Films for Radio. It's a little more produced and varied than the average OTR recording, but I found it to be a good place for a beginner to start. The other three albums I've heard from them, Good Dog Bad Dog, Ohio, and Drunkard's Prayer, are all very good, but as they're generally more slow and sparse, I think they take more patience to appreciate, unless slow and sparse is totally your thing to begin with.

Yeah, that'd be my second recommendation.. and murlough is right, Ohio and Drunkard's Prayer are pretty slow... which I really like, but if you don't you should probably check out Films for Radio. Or even better, both! Josh

Maybe we should make worldofcm a Virtual Best-of Over the Rhine Mix.

I was actually just thinking about that. The trouble is I haven't heard enough of their older stuff to give a good vote on that..

The best bet, I think, is one of their live albums-- Changes Come or Live from Nowhere-- but those are both out of print at this point, so I'd cast my vote for Good Dog Bad Dog.
There's supposedly a best-of compilation coming out later this year, but I don't know much about it at this point.

I would actually vote in this one.
My two favorite OTR albums are Drunkard's Prayer and Changes Come. I can imagine worldofcm liking Drunkard's Prayer based on his tastes.

what song did you hear? a good starting point would be to get the album that song is on. edited to add: never mind. I looked at your last.fm list and saw that the song was Flown Free, which is not on any of their albums. my first thought was that a virtual best-of would be painful. (not enough songs can fit.) but it would be fun! if you like free music, archive.org has a bunch of excellent-quality recordings of concerts.

Speaking of OTR, does anyone have an mp3 of their live rendering of "Summertime" they could pub? I've seen it on a few of their setlists, and I'm assuming it is the "Summertime" (and the living is easy...). If so, that would be fantastic.

archive.org has an older recording, the Lime Spider show, that the song is on, paired with The Seahorse. I know I've got a more recent recording of it somewhere, probably not ripped to my computer yet, though. I'll try to hunt it down. (this is more for my own notes than anything: I've got it on the CStone show and the Chicago Double Door show, neither of which seemed to have been ripped to mp3 yet. the song is also on the Asheville show, but I think I only have the dvd of that, not the audio-only. I have to commandeer another computer in order to rip mp3s, but I'll try to do that this weekend, as I'm sure the newer shows are of better sound quality than the Lime Spider one. another note to self: CStone song has pops at the end due to a yahoo setting off a roman candle.)

Oh yes.. Changes Come is one of my all-time favorite live records.. I especially like the live version of Changes Come here.. it's very very emotional and just awesome. I don't have Live from Nowhere though If we do it, we should do a 2-CD best of Josh

A virtual best-of would be horrifying to actually vote in, but it would still be fun. Let's do it!

Thanks for the recommendations.
Yeah, schil - the song "Flown Free" is from The Message: Psalms. If anyone's heard the song, maybe they can point to an album that is kind of like that song. I'm feeling either Drunkard's Prayer or Ohio.

I think that Flown Free, with the gospel choir effect and psalmish lyrics, is a bit different from their other songs, but yeah, either Drunkard's Prayer or Ohio would be great places to start. with Ohio you get more music and a wider variety of styles, but perhaps Drunkard's Prayer would be more accessible.

Agreed, "Flown Free" is very unusual for OTR.

It was unusual roughly the same way that Ohio's "Idea #21" was.

Ohio is the only OTR album I've ever heard (apart from a few songs here and there), and I do recall "Idea #21" sticking out. I've always meant to listen to more stuff by them, but for some reason I never have.

I'm guessing that's why "Idea #21" was a hidden track.

I've not heard "Flown Free," nor do I have any of their live albums (which I am ashamed to admit). I would echo the recommendation to start with either Films for Radio or Ohio, although Good Dog Bad Dog is my personal favorite, followed by Drunkard's Prayer.
I don't think I would ever be able to narrow down my favorites to create a best-of, but it still sounds like a fun idea.

Just letting everyone know that I got Drunkard's Prayer digitally - and will probably be getting Films for Radio very soon. Can't wait to listen!
