And since we're a board that celebrates the arts, I just HAVE to include this vintage clip of James Brown performing at the game formerly known as the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.

Other thoughts:

I think USC and Texas have the early edge (again) on National title hopes, but there are several teams with a realistic shot (IMO): Ohio State, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, Miami, LSU, Florida State, Auburn and Michigan.

My (very) early conference picks:
SEC: Auburn
Big 10: Ohio State
Big 12: Texas
Big East: West Virginia
Pac-10: USC
ACC: Virginia Tech (least confident of this one)
Others: ehhh...who cares?  ph34r

Woot Hokies. Just so long as we don't choke and lose to a team with an inferior record like we did last year XD.

Notre Dame should be looking at an easy road to the BCS, sans having to fight USC. Brady Quinn is probably the frontrunner at this point to win the Heisman.

Other than that, I think USC has a good shot, and same with West Virginia. I don't see Texas, with a new QB who will probably screw up at least a couple of games, and Ohio State, with 9 new defenders, making the BCS Championship Game. I also like Auburn's chances, and Oklahoma looks like a good pick if it gets through Texas.

I was (1997 - 2000) ... and in my heart Georgia goes 12-0, wins the SEC and NC. In my head, I know our thin OL means we probably drop 1 or 2 this year. That said ... GO DAWGS!

Unless something has changed in the Big East, WVU is practically a shoo-in over there. That the, er, not-so-big-anymore East can count on a bowl game at all is kind of questionable to me.

Notre Dame is evil. I normally don't hope for bad things to happen to football teams, but I make an exception for Notre Dame.

Only reason I say West Virginia has the best shot to go undefeated is that Louisville (with a superior QB and RB to WVA) has to play the Miami Hurricanes.  If Miami wasn't on the UL schedule, I'd take the Cardinals to go undefeated and the Mountaineers to have 1 loss.

Man, the first quarter of the Tech/Northeastern game was insane. Why did we schedule such a lame team for our opening game? I mean, I'm all for gaining confidence by playing easy teams, but this just looks like a big team beating on a poor little guy for the sake of our ego.

How 'bout them Dawgs?  18-0 over South Carolina.  Last time Spurrier was shut out was in 1987.

If WVU gets a National Championship slot just because they have the easiest schedule imaginable, I'm going to be very upset.

Michael Bush broke his leg and Louisville is still amazing.  GO CARDS.

(I know I'm a Kentucky fan and I'm supposed to hate the Ville, but I like them quite a lot . . . Duke and UNC and Tennessee I hate.)

Kentucky actually WON a game.  I'm in shock.

Ohio State-Texas was not a very exciting game at all.  We watched that last night, and we were sort of wishing we could watch the Tennessee-Air Force match.  I bet that was a lot more intense!

Rutgers was amazing. I mean, granted, they were playing crap squadron, but their game was on the smaller TV at the sports bar we were at, and I'd watch it during the commercials of the VT game. It seems like every time I'd look over, it would be "oh, Rutgers scored again". It would be nice if they could take out WVU.

I have student tickets to the Duke game next week. Now I just have to decide if it's going to be a good enough game to be worth battling the crowds and the inevitable sunburn :/

A thing of beauty. Georgia's defense is going to be tough all year.

I don't know what the Air Force coach was thinking. He should've taken his chances in OT.

I actually attended the VT/Duke game. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a yawner. The most interesting thing was watching a cheerleader do a faceplant (apparently I'm a sadist, since I lauged at it). I think Duke really even stopped trying. Even against our second- or third-string offense and defense, they couldn't get anything going. Either that or they just really suck, which I suppose is also possible.

Sean Glennon is proving himself to be a capable quarterback; not superstar-Mike-Vick level, but at least dependable-Bryan-Randall level. One of these days when the Hokies play an actual good team, we'll see how they do.

They didn't just lose, they got throttled.  Unfourtunately, my FSU Noles lost tonight, ruining what would have otherwise been an awesome day (oh yeah, and the Gators came back and beat the Volunteers, that was disappointing).

FSU gets no sympathy from me; not after they beat the Hokies for the ACC championship despite being the underdog Wink

I'm especially glad to see Louisville looking good, since they are quite possibly all that stands between WVU and an undefeated season. It's too bad that the Vols lost, but despite the fact that they're my hometown team, I don't care too much about them. If they went up against the Hokies, I would be decked out in maroon all the way.

Louisville looked great even after the starting QB, Brian Brohm, went out with an injured hand.  They beat the hell out of Miami and that makes me happy.  Even though I shouldn't like the Vuhl because I am a Syracuse fan, anyone who beats Miami is good in my book (except for Florida State because I hate them too)

Phew!  That was a close call for the Gators against the Vols.  Considering that the Gators kept shooting themselves in the foot in the first half, they were very lucky to get out of there with a "W."

As for my other team, the Jackets, it took a strong 4th quarter for them to avoid getting upset by Troy.  They should be able to handle Virginia next week, but I'm not looking forward to that Virginia Tech game.

Are the Cavaliers so bad this year that GT isn't going to go in as the underdog? Obviously I have no love for Virginia and thus would enjoy seeing them get trounced by the Jackets, but I was under the impression that even now they aren't a pushover.

I know the Cavaliers were expected to struggle this year because they lost a lot of players from last season.  Furthermore, if the early results mean anything they are really going to have a hard time this year.  Case in point, here's what happened in UVA's first three games: got smacked around by Pitt, barely edged out Wyoming, lost to Western Michigan.

I wasn't going to Florida State yet at that point, and I'll freely admit we were one of the least deserving BCS team in recent memory.  If we somehow make it this year (doubt it, though the ACC is really weak) I'll say the same thing.  We're just not very good.  My dream scenario is that UF goes undefeated until they play us in the last game of the season, and we spoil their national championship hopes.

I didn't think Notre Dame was worthy of #2 ranking going into the season anyways. Way overrated. I'm glad they lost. Go Gators, glad to see them pull out a toughie again Tennessee. FSU losing. Great news. And UM getting pummeled was the highlight of my day. They have no offensive fire power. I think their recruiting has steadily declined since Larry Coker took over, but that's just me. Plus, Lousiville was just brilliant against them.

And what a day in the SEC. Auburn pulls out a controversial thriller agaist LSU 7-4. Gators storm back and beat UT by 1. I think some of the country's best defenses reside down in the SEC.

My dream scenario is that UF goes undefeated until they play us in the last game of the season, and we spoil their national championship hopes.

Nah ... with them playing Auburn, LSU and Georgia in row, they'll lose at least one (just because that is one brutal stretch). Hopefully it's the Dawgs who crush their dreams!

I'm as big a Syracuse fan as there is, but rest assured I am rooting for either Louisville or West Virginia to go undefeated and get a chance at the national title.  The Big East will then prove that it isn't a lame conference anymore. The  Vuhl, WVA, and even Rutgers are all very good this year.

The UGA/Tech game is the Saturday after Thanksgiving as usual, but this year it's home, so I'm hoping my family won't mind too much if I head back to Athens early.
Not much chance of getting sunburned at that one, but I'm gotten pretty fried the last couple of games.  Last time at least I wore sunscreen, but I missed a lot of spots, namely my nose.   :P

We play Virginia at home this year as well, but I'll be content to just watch it on TV with my dad.

Plvarona, your jackets smashed the Hokies. Maybe if we hadn't played like a Division 1-AA team for the first quarter it would have been different, but ouch. Also making it unpleasant was the drunk guy who vomited two rows behind where we were sitting. Well, good job to the GA Tech guys.

It also helps to have the best wide receiver in the nation in Calvin Johnson.  He kills any team he plays.  VA Tech looked like they couldn't do anything right today.

On the brighter side, Syracuse has 3 wins! Amazing!
