I have never attended a popular music concert, ever. My parents never really liked concerts("too loud" and such). As a result, I was never taken to any. My question to all of you is: "Are concerts worth the cost, often much as several CDs?" Is the live music experience really that wonderful? I know that I love watching people play together, but how much can you actuallly see from the cheap seats? I probably should make it a point to go see one soon, just to try it myself. So, talk about your concert experiences here, and whether you think they were worth it.

Unfortunately, big bands like U2 and REM don't make coming to East Tennessee a priority, and lesser-known bands like Over the Rhine don't seem to tour as widely, so I haven't seen many of my favorite bands, but I have been to a few great shows.
My favorite concert was the Eleventh Hour Tour, feauturing Jars of Clay, Jennifer Knapp, and Shaun Groves. I was in the first row of the balcony, and I could see things pretty well. Anyway, this was back when Jars were still keeping their sets pretty unpredictable, so there were some fun surprises thrown in, and the two opening acts both proved to be skilled musicians as well as excellent raconteurs. It was an absolute blast.
Other favorite shows include Relient K and Switchfoot, both of whom I have seen twice.
Anyway, in the end, I'd say that concerts are definitely worth it if you're a fan of the group playing and you're familiar with their songs. And I would gladly sell my left leg to catch a U2, REM, Radiohead, OtR, or Bob Dylan gig. =)

I've been to a lot of concerts but have only seen about a three bands tops that I really like. (That's what happens when you go with your youth group.) My favorite concert was the very first one I went to with The W's, Jennifer Knapp, and dc Talk in Kansas City. I don't know if anything can beat your first concert, especially when it's a good one.

Hey, Derek Webb is stopping by in 10 days. May want to check that out... 6$ a ticket, cheaper than buying the CD, lol.

I had never seen any really popular bands in concert until the Cornerstone festival last week. Is the concert experience worth the cost? The indisputable answer is: it depends. First, it depends whether you like the band and are reasonably familiar with their music; If you've never heard the songs before it can be hard to follow along, since the sound is much less polished than in the studio. Second, it depends whether you're going to be close enough to interact with the band and actually watch the way they play their instruments. Finally, it depends on whether the band actually does anything special to make it worthwhile; I was disappointed with several bands I ordinarily like, because they just played their songs, and it sounded exactly like it did on the cd, but not as good.
I'll probably have some concert reviews from C-Stone up sometime in the next couple of weeks. In the mean time, I'll just say that OtR, Switchfoot, and Five Iron Frenzy put on excellent live shows. If you get the chance to see one of those bands, I think that would be a good opportunity to find out whether you would enjoy the concert experience in general.

If you don’t have freedom as a principle, you can never see a reason not to make an exception. There are constantly going to be times when for one reason or another there’s some practical convenience in making an exception. rms
