I study with music on.  I know some people have trouble with this, but it actually helps me focus more by drawing me away from other distractions.  In fact, as I type this I am listening to Radiohead's "Climbing Up the Walls.".  So, without further ado, here are my study picks:

OK Computer, Radiohead
Automatic for the People, R.E.M.(the best one, IMHO)
Much Afraid, Jars of Clay
Glow, The Innocence Mission
Sixpence None the Richer, s/t
She Must and Shall Go Free, Derek Webb
The Joshua Tree, U2
Most classical, but especially Bach

anything by Elliot Smith, the Doves, Tori Amos, or Puccini, specifically the soprano solos like O Mio Babino Caro. Coldplay works too.

In high school, I don't think I've studied more than maybe 5 minutes scanning over something...And I go over the test stuff right before class...other than that, the public school I go to is not challenging at all...I suppose I should push myself more, but when I'm 3rd in my class anyways, it doesn't seem to matter...And yes, I realize that isn't the right attitude to have  Sad ...

However, when I get to college, I'll need to find some good study music  B)

Actually, I'm the same way. I have an extremely good memory, and if I pay attention in class, I rarely need to study.

Speaking of college...

I moved in on Thursday!  =D  Living on campus is really cool. I had a long orientation, but today is my third day of classes. There's lots of reading, and I'm a little rusty on my Spanish, but other than that, it's cool. I love my schedule. On MWF, I'm done by 12:30. TTH I have one or two classes, done by 2:50. 'S cool. Anyway, I always have music on. Right now I have Simon and Garfunkel playing. All the other ones mention are good too. I listen to pretty much anything actually, so... Ones not previously mentioned, MaryMary and Switchfoot, but if you find R&B distracting 'cuz it makes you want to dance, maybe not MaryMary. But you should check 'em out anyway.

I suppose it depends what I'm doing.  If I'm doing math problems or something that requires a fair amount of though, I need something mellower like Jars of Clay or Nichole Nordeman.  If I'm reading or really studying, I need silence.  It's too hard to concentrate.  If I'm coding, I'll listen to just about anything, something upbeat is usually good - U2, Switchfoot, etc.  If it's really late or I'm tired (nothing like coding at 2 in the morning), I've been known to listen to Veggie Tales silly songs and Relient K to stay focused.  Heh.  If I'm stressed, I put on Lifehouse's No Name Face.  That album comforts me a lot.

You and me both. =D   But its going OK for me.

So as not to limit the topic, let me broaden the criteria to include both studying AND doing homework.  Shoot, now you have to change all your lists! Wink

When I'm writing an essay or something that allows me to be at least somewhat creative, I love to listen to Radiohead's masterpiece of imagination, Kid A. That's great music to create to.

Lucky you... I actually have a pretty good memory, at least when it comes to studying and school work (I have a really bad memory in other ways. I lose things alot and many times will forget things that my parents tell me to do  unsure ), but I still have to study hard. For college anyway. My homeschool high school was pretty easy in that regard. But College Spanish... I need to study alot.

I find pop and rock pretty distracting when I try to study now.  I don't think it was always the case, but it definitely is now.

Rokran, who studies to Linkin Park? Generally the only thing I do when they're playing is put on headphones :X

I don't generally 'study' per se, but I read the assigned books and program projects. Generally I prefer silence for both of these, but if I need music (for instance, to drown out the STUPID GUYS MAKING NOISE OUTSIDE :P), I like instrumental stuff.

interesting topic.
I like to listen to music when doing homework or studying; I especially need music when doing math. not so much when writing papers. I think I generally listen to...whatever songs I am currently listening to...but once school starts again I'll let you know if I find anything in particular that is especially conducive to homework/study. in general, I like songs that I can either ignore or sing along with, depending on how much I need to concentrate.

it would be cool to make up (relevant) songs like the ones the scientist ray in Finding Nemo sings.  B) I would find that to be very helpful.

I'm listening to Amazon's free sample song Aegaetis Byrjun as I write this.  I'm having a hard time with the no lyrics singing thing, but I think it could grow on me.  If I think of it as an instrumental, it works better for me.  No fan yet, but I guess they are worth a listen, if for the sake of novelty.

Though I may just get shot for this, sometimes when I'm doing homework I like listening to music like Creed that all sounds quite similar. That way, it sort of blends into the background and leaves me to concentrate on my work. But I discovered a few years ago that, when I'm playing music and working, the times I'm most productive are when I've concentrated enough that I can no longer consciously hear the music. Therefore, I can probably be more productive without music at all, or with low-volume instrumental music. So the only real time I turn it on is when someone ELSE is playing loud music and I don't want to be distracted, so I put on headphones and try to cover it up.

after school started I took note of the music I preferred to listen to in the background while doing homework or studying. so far: Chopin (mainly nocturnes), Innocence Mission, and a few assorted songs that I currently listen to a lot, like Billy Joel's "Vienna Waits for You", Kath Bloom's "Come Here", Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle", Joe Dassin's "Champs Elysees", and Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide".
the cd from my music appreciation class is also good for studying. it mainly has Benjamin Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra", as well as various pieces from Bach.
the sort of classical music that is best study/homework music is complex but not too "bright" (such as "Spring" from Vivaldi's Four Seasons) or too heavy (such as Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King). currently I don't have much classical stuff with me so this weekend I plan to dig out my cds and see what else is good or not good.

DUDE! I was heading into this thread to say "Sigur Ros" because that's what I would use to study if I still studied. However I read books to great music such as:

Jars of Clay - "Moreover: From the Studio"
Joy Electric - Just about anything
Moreno Veloso - his only album
Enya - A Day without rain
