While I'm not surprised to hear that Christians are rude to the outside world, it does surprise me that they're specifically worse tippers than other people. I would assume the worst tippers are just people with poor math skills, or people who are stingy, and there are plenty of religious and non-religious folks alike who fit that description. But you've seen the data; I haven't. Christians are one of the people groups notorious for being bad tippers. I've seen so many of them leave a bad tip and a tract, even when given good service. I've been fortunate that I tend to get good tips and a tract, so i don't know if I'm doing something different than my coworkers or what, but pretty much anyone you ask in the service industry will give you the same story, Christians are not known for being good tippers. I generally try to be very gracious and patient to waiters/restaurant staff because I figure any job where you're dealing with the general public expecting you to serve them all day will result in you getting walked on by the majority of people, who think you owe them something just because they walked through the door and became the customer. It's pretty much the most frustrating job I have ever worked, but I keep working there because all the, "real jobs", that I have had paid considerably less. Even with just tips I average about 16-17 bucks an hour, 20 an hour on busy weekends, so I can deal with the stress since the flexibility works in my favor as an aspiring musician/young guy who likes to travel.

"A bad tip and a tract." LOL. "You suck, wanna come to Christ?" It's be almost better to leave a bad tip and not leave the tract, seeing as you're just setting someone up to not want to hear the Gospel by insulting them with a bad tip.

Even worse is when they leave the tract AS the tip, some of which are obnoxious enough to make remarks about them leaving something more valuable than money. It's pretty common down here in the south/bible belt area.

Heh, I've delivered pizza to church people THAT I KNOW and gotten lousy tips. And out of curiosity, why is it that a lot of people think they can get away with not tipping the customary 10-15% for delivery people? I know we didn't take your order and/or "serve" you in the traditional sense, but we did, you know, drive there.

Tipping is one of those weird things where there are a lot of unwritten rules. I knew about tipping the pizza delivery guy, but I went for years without realizing you were supposed to tip the people who cut your hair. I felt really embarrassed once I found that out. I always wonder whether you're supposed to tip at a buffet. You served yourself, and the wait staff just cleared your plates and stuff, so I'm not sure how that's supposed to work. I'm terrified to ever go anywhere that would require me to take a cab for similar reasons. And whenever I eat or go to concerts at upscale places where there's a "bathroom guy" trying to hand me paper towels and get me to tip him for the use of various toiletries on my way out the door? Awkward...

Is it even the same everywhere in the country? That's the thing about "etiquette" - it's like one of those sets of rules nobody tells you but you're supposed to magically know them anyway. NP: "Streets of Fire", The New Pornographers

Everywhere I've been and everyone I've talked to, tipping works the same way across the board. There are some states where servers make more and thus can afford to be tipped less of a percentage, but that's about it AFAIK.

That's another situation where I was embarrassed once I noticed other people were tipping those dudes. Poor guys probably make minimum wage, standing out there scraping the dirt off your rims all day. One thing I will NEVER tip for is Valet Parking. Seriously, you're going to make me pay $10 or $20 for some dude to park my car because you've removed all options for me to park it myself, and then I'm supposed to give extra money on top of that? For what? I could have squeezed into that tight spot myself without scratching the Beamers that cost ten times what my car did, if you'd have let me.

Glad it wasn't used as the theme music for an auto show! I heard Metric's "Sick Muse" playing at Best Buy today; didn't realize they were getting mainstream exposure in the States.

Some humorous sightings from the weirdness that is my life:
The other night, I had a very strange and mildly disturbing dream in which Thom Yorke was killed in a grizzly accident while filming some sort of S&M-themed music video for Trent Reznor. I'm not sure why I was on the set, but I somehow ended up in possession of a flash drive that contained the last recorded Radiohead song. I then proceeded to feel all angsty over whether I should sell it on eBay or not.
We have a new worship leader at our church who has one of those deep "post-grungy" sort of voices - you know, like those lead singers from all the Creed copycat bands. I was thinking yesterday as he was leading us through several modern reworkings of old hymns with gimmicky tacked-on choruses that this sounded an awful lot like a bad Jeremy Camp concert. I then chastized myself for assuming that the sound of a guy's voice automatically makes him a fan of an artist I dislike who happens to have a similar voice, but then during offering, what does he decided to play? Jeremy Camp's "Restored". He then proceeded to close with the Chris Tomlin arrangement of "The Wonderful Cross" (not a bad thing to do), reimagined with a country beat (slightly questionable thing to do), and encouraged the mostly Asian and decidedly non-country-fan congregation to clap along to the beat (very bad idea, since almost nobody in the room caught on that you were supposed to clap on 2 and 4 and it just dissolved into total confusion.) Ugh. I thought our worship teams had more finesse than that.

Here's a video of a dude covering Tool's song "Lateralus" on the piano. This is pretty amazing, but you probably need to have heard the original song to appreciate the complexity of what he's attempting here. http://www.metalsucks.net/2009/08/24/tools-lateralus-the-epic-piano-version/

I watched Jay Leno's primetime debut last night. It was not promising. There a particularly dreadful sketch involving a "comedian" who did a musical routine for customers at a car wash. The bizarre part was that the segue music in between his musical numbers appeared to be a brief instrumental sample from Derek Webb's "Becoming a Slave". It was such a short snippet of music that it took me several minutes to recall why it sounded familiar.

I postd a long time ago that some hotel chain used an Andrew Bird instrumental from The Mysterious Production of Eggs in one of their adds. It was the Mariott. Saw two more tonight that had clips from "Skin Is, My" and "Imitosis" in them, respectively. Always catches me off guard when I hear music on TV that I've heard in no other previous context except for when I chose to listen to it.

At BrewBacher's today I heard NEEDTOBREATHE's "Something Beautiful."
Also, last month while I was visiting Cincinnati, I heard Fleet Foxes' "He Doesn't Know Why" at the Cincinnati airport. I was pleasantly surprised with that one, especially since that song was not a radio single as far as I know.

They made a video for it (in which they get all chummy with barnyard animals... that came out wrong), so I would assume it's a "single" insofar as bands like that actually get to have singles. "Mykonos" was a single and it wasn't even on the album!

I've been hearing Muse a lot lately - we were in a restaurant on Saturday and they had ESPN on, and there was some horse racing coverage using "Resistance" as its bumper music. Also, "Uprising" is in ABC's commercials for V.
Not really a music sighting, but on tonight's Heroes, a character referred to himself as "the patron saint of lost causes", which immediately made me think of two of my favorite Anberlin songs.

Speaking of suing people... I just have a personal vendetta against the show since its premiere rudely interrupted the first season of Boston Legal. Which is kind of funny, when you think about it - complaining about how trashy another show is that took the place of Boston Legal.
