Switchfoot seems to be making the rounds as of late. I just heard "Bullet Soul" on College Football on ESPN earlier tonight.

Muse was on SNL tonight, and they were pretty much the only good aspect of an otherwise abysmal show. They played "Uprising" and "Starlight". Why they picked a 3-year-old song, I don't know, but it's all relatively new to me, so whatever.

Was on the North Shore of Oahu yesterday, and saw posters around town for an Andrew Bird concert coming up at a local cafe in February. I so wish I could be here for that!

I watched Tool's Parabol/Parabola video, and I wonder what it means.
I get the ending, but the Parabol section (whose fruit remind me of the bridge of the Pixies song Monkey Gone to Heaven) and the little man crushed by spheres who gets dissected by Tricky later make no sense to me.

Now Switchfoot's "The Sound" seems to be making the rounds. I heard it during tonight's BCS National Championship game while they were cutting to a commercial.
Speaking about songs heard while cutting to a commercial during football games, I have also recently heard Mat Kearney's "All I Have" that way.

Speaking of the BCS, I heard jets whoosh overhead followed by explosions when I was finishing up at the office today, thought we were being attacked, then looked out the window and saw fireworks over the Rose Bowl and thought, "Oh, it's just football. Phew." (Afterthought: So THAT'S why there were so dang many people at LAX last night!)

Yup. And they were all Texans or Alabamaians. Bet that was some fun people watching for the folks in LA.

Watched an old Magnum, P.I. episode that had the Genesis song "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" in it. I've heard the song many times and recognized it almost immediately (despite knowing few other Genesis songs), but much to my surprise, I learned today that it was Phil Collins singing on that track, not Peter Gabriel (who had been out of the band for like a decade at that point). I swear, I can't tell the two apart.

During my college interview today, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" by the Beatles, "Better Man" by Pearl Jam, "With or Without You" by U2, and "Gimme Shelter" by Rolling Stones played. They provided good topics for discussion.

Andrew Bird's Natural Disasters was playing in the Parenthood pilot. also his song Sic of Elephants was playing during a dinner scene in an episode of The United States of Tara. (in that same scene someone came by and asked if anybody wanted to watch Lost.)

Tonight during the Oscars, there was an ad for some non-profit film that had Anathallo's "Dokkoise House (With Face Covered)" playing in the background. Color me surprised! Since the ad money from using "Yuki! Yuki! Yuki!" in that Vicks ad helped fund the making of Canopy Glow, I'm hoping this buys them another album... er, except it's a non-profit... never mind.

Keep hope alive! Even nonprofits have to pay rights somehow (unless Anathallo gave them the song to use for free).

I was mistaken. It was a commercial for American Express that emphasized some sort of a foundation it was partnering with. So yeah, this could help fund future recordings. And it's my favorite song of theirs. What are the odds? Absolutely nothing about Floating World screams "use me in a commercial". NP: "42", Coldplay

Saturday Night Live's been scoring big with their choice of musical guests lately. Vampire Weekend was on two weekends ago (their first appearance on the show was how I first discovered them), and they played "Cousins" and "Giving Up the Gun". The latter might have been a tad overproduced for a live performance, but they made it sound like the album and it was fun. Pearl Jam was on this past weekend, and surprisingly, they played "Come Clean" and "Unthought Known", neither of which were songs that I thought stood out on Backspacer, but I appreciate them both more now. Still surprised that they didn't play one of the big rockers from that record, but oh well. The members of PJ also appeared randomly in a sketch that spoofed The Twilight Zone.
Also, while this isn't a musician, it concerns someone whose audio was once uploaded to to our Phorum, and who I know bloop likes. Patton Oswalt has been on a handful of episodes of Caprica, basically playing that world's version of Jay Leno.

On one of the local sports talk radio shows this afternoon I heard a snippet of Flogging Molly's "Requiem For a Dying Song." I guess they were looking for some Irish-influenced music to play on St. Patrick's Day.

Heh, I caught the first few seconds of "Traveler's Song" when GA picked up right after FlashForward ended tonight. I thought "How nice for them" and promptly switched over to The Office.
Also, I now realize why Owl City's "The Bird and the Worm" struck me as familiar when I first listened to it. Vons (a local supermarket chain) has been using an instrumental version of it in ads. I'm guessing that's because neither Target nor any of the iProducts got to it first, because it totally sounds like that kind of song.

I was a random music sighting the other day. I was wearing my Earthsuit shirt and a guy stopped me to compliment me on it, saying they had been one of his favorite bands. I said "Yeah, too bad they only cut one album", and he corrected me and said two albums, so he must have been into them enough to know about The Rise of Modern Simulation. Anyway, we both agreed that the band they had been reincarnated as was also one of our favorites.

While I was waiting to talk to some of the guys from Iona after the concert the other day, a bearded man walked up and introduced himself to one of the band members as Don Francisco. (CCM singer popular in the 70's. I've never heard any of his music, but recognized the name. Wikipedia says he lives in Colorado, so I guess these veteran artists met at some point a long time ago and he wanted to re-introduce himself while the band was in his neighborhood.)

Don Francisco had a very good song called "He's Alive". This is making me want to listen to it. Edit: Just noticed you mentioned that song in the Concert Journals topic.

That's apparently his best known song. It's older than I am. While I know none of Francisco's music, it's kind of cool to see these old-school Christian musicians, forgotten by most CCM fans due to the changing of trends and tastes, showing such support for one another outside of any organized, mainstream industry.

Earlier tonight, I was shopping at Target and I ended up buying the new Robert Randolph & The Family Band CD. On my way there, while I was listening to ESPN Radio, I heard Randolph's "Deliver Me", as the Freddie Coleman show was coming back in from a commercial break. Funny how that worked out.

At church earlier today, we sang "They'll Know We Are Christians", and my accompaniment borrowed a little bit from Jars of Clay's version. In their version, there's a descending piano part at the beginning of the refrain that I like a lot. I adapted that part for the cello, and worked it into my part for that song.
