one of my students was in North Carolina visiting his grandparents and dad, and in the Charlotte airport on the way home, he looked and saw someone he figured might be in a band. Ultimately, he discovered it was one of the Avett Brothers, and he wound up meeting him, and that one took him over to where the other 4 were sitting and he met the entire band and got autographs, etc. He said they were amazingly nice and incredible guys.

Apparently, Switchfoot got to play at the ESPY's pre-show earlier tonight. I heard a little bit of "Bullet Soul" during the telecast.

instrumental parts of Andrew Bird's "Sectionate City" and "Tenuousness" played in the background of The Private Life of Chickens.
Neko Case's "I'm An Animal" played at the end of the most recent episode of Lie to Me.

Was walking around downtown Seattle today, and noticed that The New Pornographers were playing at the Showbox tonight. I'd have considered going, but neither of my traveling companions are into the band. Some other time.

Was treating to an outgoing worship director at our church playing his own version of Nichole Nordeman's "Legacy" as a closing thought to leave us with, and then a temporary fill-in worship leader (also our former choir director) giving us her version of Chris Rice's "Untitled Hymn" the following Sunday.

Yesterday I was at the California Capital Airshow and heard Owl City's song, Fireflies, playing on the loud speakers. While driving home after spending 8 1/2 hours at the airshow, I just happened to remember that a local church was having a service in 8 minutes. Being only 6 minutes away from the church at the time, I decided to stop in and see what was going on. It just so happened that Matt Redman was leading worship that night. And earlier this morning I visited another local church and Natalie Grant was leading worship.

Another case of me being the random music sighting. I was wearing my WWAI-era Jars of Clay shirt at the supermarket today, and the I had the following exchange with the woman who was checking me out.* Cashier: You listen to Jars of Clay? Me: Yeah. Cashier: I used to listen to them. Me: They're still around, you know. Cashier: Yeah, but I don't listen to them any more. *awkward pause* Cashier: You ever heard of Tony Mac? Me: Do you mean Toby Mac? Cashier: Yeah. Do you listen to him? Me: I used to. Cashier: Why'd you stop? Me: Because he started to suck. Guy Bagging My Groceries: * Oh, come on. You know what I mean.

Yeah, there were just so many levels of mystifying ridiculousness to it. First, why bring up the band on a stranger's shirt as small talk if you're just going to imply that they're not very good any more? Would you do this if it were a Metallica shirt? How about a Michael Jackson shirt if it were before MJ's death? I mean, if I saw some random person in public with a Third Day shirt, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to diss their band. I might if they were my friend and I wanted to give them a push toward listening to better music. Otherwise, I really wouldn't get involved.
Second, if you're going to bring up an artist you apparently like a lot as an alternative, couldn't you at least get his name right?
I will admit that I'm usually not bold enough to be snarky with complete strangers in person. Some of it was just showing my contempt for the cashier's attempts at small talk at all. Even normally when they just ask something like how my day's going, I usually think (but don't say) something like, "Well, I'm shopping for groceries, which I hate having to do in general, and I happened to pick the one line that got held up because somebody's food stamps wouldn't scan yet again, so, not great."

Speaking about random music sightings in grocery stories, I heard MercyMe's "So Long Self" at Albertson's earlier today. As much as MercyMe's music tends to bore me, I actually like that particular song.
Also, before the Switchfoot concert at the Varsity Theatre in Baton Rouge this past Friday night, I heard Mute Math's "Backfire" as part of the house music.

A few more from yesterday:
On a promo for a new TNT show (I think it's called Men of a Certain Age), I heard Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers' "Shady Esperanto and the Young Hearts."
I also saw in the newspaper yesterday that Patty Griffin was going to be on Austin City Limits that evening. I made sure to watch that.

I've been constantly hearing "Secrets" from OneRepublic. The song is played quite frequently before and after services at various churches in my area. And today I just heard it on a commercial for the movie Love and Other Drugs, only to hear it played a few minutes later on a commercial for the show Nikita.

Speaking of constantly hearing the song "Secrets" by OneRepublic, I heard it again yesterday while I was standing a long line at a store. While I was still standing in the line, I also heard "Fireflies" by Owl City and Salvador's "Heaven."

I know they recorded those songs, as well as an entire Christmas album - I just didn't think any of it had reached the mainstream beyond their original take on "Drummer Boy".

Vampire Weekend's "Holiday" in a car commercial. Minus the parts about bombs and stuff.
Pearl Jam's "Just Breathe" in an episode of Brothers and Sisters. Not that it had anything to do with the plot, but, good song.

I've never had anything against Matt Brouwer but I heard his cover of the Goo Goo Dolls' "Better Days" and it bothered me. It lacked the passion and energy of the original version. I don't hate it as much as I loathe Salvador's version of "Heaven" by Los Lonely Boys. It's a shame when record labels release those cover songs as singles and the mentally deficient Christian radio stations promote the song as if its the artist's original song. Bullshit. /end rant

I can't speak for the songs in question, but my usual assumption with Christian artists covering "secular" songs and Christian radio playing the cover versions is that folks more or less know it's a cover, and justify listening to the cover because it's by a Christian artist even though the original is "secular" music and therefore not allowed. But yeah, it's insane troll logic either way.
