So this is quite random.  Here is a link to a video of Switchfoot covering Beyonce's "Crazy In Love."

http://music.yahoo.com/promo-18684304-53-20070129-?pvc=0
I saw that yesterday.  That was funny for the wrong reasons.  At least they looked like they were enjoying themselves, though.

The first time I saw Switchfoot live, opening for Delirious? in 1999, they did a cover of Aretha Franklin's "Respect".

I had an mp3 of that at one point, I don't know if I still do, it was only like a minute and a half long on the mp3.

It was a partial cover that led into "I Turn Everything Over", and rather awkwardly at that.

I was catching up with a Veronica Mars episode from a couple weeks ago. one of the characters compared dating to listening to music and said he's not going to throw in a David Hasselhoff cd just because he left his Neko Case in the car.   happy

Typical by Mute Math was the song on Sportscenter's Ultimate Highlight tonight.

I also heard one of Daughtry's songs on a promo for some CBS shows last night too.  I can't think of it's name, but it's a good song.

I read that his album has already sold over 1.5 million copies.  Not too shabby.

Caught the end of Scrubs tonight when I tuned in for 30 Rock. This time, the choice of music was far better than Kutless - it was Ron Sexsmith's "Hands of Time".

Last night on Leno, A Bird and A Bee performed.  I enjoyed the song and the female lead singer/bass player was extremely gorgeous.

okay, is A Bird and A Bee the same as The Bird and The Bee? (gotta be.) Inara George of The Bird and The Bee was at Eleni Mandell's cd release party last night, tearing up the dance floor. she got the prize for best dressed.

We play Jars of Clay's "Five Candles (You Were There)" at the grocery store I work at. We also play a bunch of Sixpence None the Richer songs, which isn't as surprising.

On ESPN Radio's "The Herd" earlier today, the intro to Switchfoot's "Oh!  Gravity" was used to open one of the segments.

"Easy" by the Barenaked Ladies made in appearance in this week's episode of Brothers & Sisters. I'm guessing they retained their music director from Alias or something; the way music is used out of nowhere in certain scenes just to have something that sounds cool playing instead of incidental music is very reminiscent of the way Alias did it, just not as flashy because it's not a flashy show.

It was funny. My wife was in the other room watching while I read, and I hear the opening guitar lines. I think, "there's no way Mute Math is on AI." Sure enough, Chris nails it. Pretty good job. I hope Mute Math gets a little extra attention from this (similar to KT Tunstall after Katherine McPhee sang Black Horse and Cherry Tree)

I was watching just mostly to see Chris perform.  For those that don't know, he is a fairly regular poster on CMCentral under the moniker of kindacrazy24 (I think).  He is the lead singer of Half Past Forever.  Anyway, as soon as it started, I said to my wife, "Holy crap!  He's singing Mute Math!"  He did a good job, but, come on, enough with the "I have to think up a snappy line for Simon" schtick.  Just shut up and sing.

I've heard "Five Candles (You Were There)" on Muzak in a KFC, so I'm sure it gets piped into grocery stores and other random places as well. The thing about Muzak, unlike radio that people actively listen to, is that songs seem to never leave the rotation despite how old they are, so that would explain why it still pops up every now and then a good 10 years after the song was first released.

Yeah, I wasn't crazy about Chris in that instance.  He was coming off as a counter-asshole with worse hair.

I also hope that his entire strategy isn't just to get that CCM niche and ride that to victory, because I just don't think that would work out very well in the long run.

My current favorite contestant is Melinda.  She hasn't gotten much criticism, but something tells me that she'd be a class act in the face of it.

Mute Math only looks like it belongs to the "CCM niche" if you don't actually belong to that niche.

I mentioned this in the "Last movie you saw" thread, but Chris Tomlin's "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" is in the trailer for Amazing Grace.

Yeah?  Tell that to the CMC people who are practically falling over themselves over the fact that he performed Mute Math.

I know a bit of the CCM niche myself, but I wouldn't consider myself a part of it, really.  I like an artist here and there, though.

Yeah?  Tell that to the CMC people who are practically falling over themselves over the fact that he performed Mute Math.

Not everyone at CMC is a "Christian music only" listener. Mute Math themselves shy away from the label and had issues with their album only getting Christian-market distribution. Certainly a lot of CCM fans have heard of them and like them (partially due to Earthsuit having been on a prominent Christian label and being mostly popular in CCM-land). But still, a singer trying to appeal to the "CCM niche" could probably pick something a lot more "explicitly" Christian with which to grab their attention.

I know a bit of the CCM niche myself, but I wouldn't consider myself a part of it, really.  I like an artist here and there, though.

No argument with any of that; I'm just trying to point out that Mute Math's popularity definitely expands beyond the boundaries of the CCM niche, though expands inside it as well.

I wonder if that performance has been YouTubed or if I can find it anywhere else.

Oh, I forgot to mention - during the Oscars the other night, when showing the nominees for Best Documentary, during the brief clip of Jesus Camp, I recognized a snippet of Carman's song "Who's in the House?" That one brought me back to a very dark and scary place.

Sighted:  TobyMac at #10 and Anberlin at #19 on the Billboard sales charts for the week.  Cut out from the Billboard release:

Quote
Former dc Talk member tobyMac earns his highest charting solo album and sales week with the ForeFront effort "Portable Sounds," which starts at No. 10 with 51,000. He also scores his first No. 1 on the Top Christian Albums chart. His last studio set, 2004's "Welcome To Diverse City," debuted and peaked at No. 54 on The Billboard 200 with 21,000. Two of dc Talk's records, 1995's "Jesus Freak" and 1998's "Supernatural," debuted in the top 20 of The Billboard 200: the former started at No. 16 with 86,000 and the latter at No. 4 with 106,000.

Only three other records bowed in the top 100 of the chart this week. Christian rock act Anberlin's "Cities" bows at No. 19 with 34,000. The group's last set, 2005's "Never Take Friendship Personal" (Tooth & Nail) debuted and peaked at No. 144.

I turned on the TV a few minutes early last night to watch 30 Rock, and at the end of a Scrubs episode, during a scene where somebody was talking about having a baby and then a bunch of people were seen partying, the song "All the Words" by Kutless was playing in the background.

huh Shocked wacko shock ph34r rolleyes Angry

It totally had nothing to do with anything.

NP: "Chaos", Mute Math

I just watched that episode. That was indeed the most pointless choice of music EVER! It was totally random, you'd think there'd be a song with a theme of joy about having a baby or something.

Quite jarring, usually the music fits better than that.
