I keep hearing NEEDTOBREATHE's "Nothing Left to Lose" in promos for the Homeland Security TV show.

i was less familiar with the two songs (especially the first one) that Fleet Foxes did than i had hoped to be, but after watching it twice on DVR, those songs were amazing choices, especially the first one, to showcase the breadth of their talent.  i'm gonna find the EP and get it now because of that first performance.  seeing them perform live, even if it was 'on tv, live,' made me even more of a fan.

i can't help but look at them and think they just stepped out of a lumberjack or deer camp or something, though, haha.

Yeah - NPR rightly dubbed 2008 "The Year of the Beard".

i was less familiar with the two songs (especially the first one) that Fleet Foxes did than i had hoped to be, but after watching it twice on DVR, those songs were amazing choices, especially the first one, to showcase the breadth of their talent.

"Mykonos" was from their Sun Giant EP, which I didn't get around to listening to until just this month. It's a solid follow-up (or precursor, depending on whether you consider release date vs. recording date) to their album. It took me a minute to recognize the song. And I agree that it was a good choice because it showcased their vocal talent. "Blue Ridge Mountains" is one of my personal favorites and I guess I have to accept now that it's a highlight to many other folks (I had previously assumed it was a sleeper that didn't stand out to most folks).

I honestly expected "White Winter Hymnal", since I figured that was the "single" and it too would have been a good vocal showcase. But I ain't complaining.

i'm gonna find the EP and get it now because of that first performance.  seeing them perform live, even if it was 'on tv, live,' made me even more of a fan.

Glad to hear it. Most bands sound crappy on live TV. These guys were clearly not used to it and they sounded a little thin, too, but then, their record is rather lushly produced, so things were bound to be a bit more raw in a live format. Since I haven't yet had the chance to see them live, this was a good appetizer.

i can't help but look at them and think they just stepped out of a lumberjack or deer camp or something, though, haha.

They've definitely got the "mountain man" look down. Though Robin Pecknold has that scary "I coulda been a Foo Fighter" sort of facial expression. Most of the other guys seemed hauntingly expressionless - you can tell they're used to smaller crowds. I think it's awesome that SNL went for an indie fave (they've made several good calls in this vein lately, in between the teenybopper singers and hip-hoppers anyway), but Fleet Foxes was a bit of a "fish out of water" pick for the show.

I Can Only Imagine was played on American Idol during the last singer's post-audition segment where he called his sick mom that he cares for during the day or whatever

That song is becoming the stock response to any tearjerker situation that involves people being sick and/or dying. I love the song, but to me its repeated usage reflects that the person who selected it can not imagine.

Yeah, that's really true. I used to like the song, but to me, hearing it repeated endlessly kind of depleted the amount of the significance I received from it; since when you hear the song a thousand times you usually don't contemplate on its full meaning as thoroughly (unless the reason you listen to the song endlessly is to contemplate on it in further depth).

It's possible to overuse any song, really - at some point you need new wineskins. (I hope I'm understanding that analogy correctly. Or maybe we need a new analogy.)

Kim Taylor had a song, Days Like This, on the tv show Flashpoint recently. apparently a lot of people liked it and downloaded it from itunes, bumping it to the top 20 recently downloaded songs. I love the song, so even though I don't watch that particular show or use itunes, I think this is cool.

randomly heard an Emmylou Harris cover while I was browsing at World Market. it was "Beyond the Blue", which Emmylou recorded as a duet with Patty Griffin. it was weird to hear the song at World Market. it was weird to hear it without Emmylou's and Patty's voices. it was just weird.

I saw an ad for a new Prince album the other day in a commercial break during the show Kings. Just thought that was funny. Would have been even funnier if Queen was advertising a new album, too.

U2's "Magnificent" was played during last night's Brothers & Sisters. While an awesome song, its use in the show made absolutely zero sense (It was played as the soundtrack to Rob Lowe's character discovering his wife was having an emotional affair.)

I recognized a Swingle Singers song on the soundtrack of Milk. I always notice stuff sung in that a cappella "instrumental" style, but usually it's not the Swingle Singers. I like to think that I can tell them apart from impostors. snob( it helps a lot if the piece being sung is Bach. rolleyes)

I noticed while passing by a store today that Meg & Dia would be making an in-store appearance to promote their new album in a week. I thought that sounded kind of interesting. Then I realized the store was Hot Topic. UH-OH. They've really gone teenybopper, haven't they?

That's how it appears to me as well. Anyone who's ever been a real resident says there's no way in hell any of these people would have enough free time for all of the romantic and sexual dalliances that apparently happen on the show.

Hell of a soundtrack, though. Whoever does the music direction on that one digs pretty deep. Brothers & Sisters is similar in that respect.

The 30 Rock finale may go down in history as the mother of all random music sightings. It featured a celebrity choir wreaking havoc on the "We Are the World" concept by singing a charity song for one Alan Alda. The choir included Elvis Costello, Clay Aiken, Mary J. Blige, Adam Levine, Sheryl Crow, a couple Beastie Boys, Talib Kweli, Cyndi Lauper, Moby, and Robert Randolph (!), among others.

Yeah, my brother said, "They're all reformed now" or something of that nature, with a hint of derision in his voice. (He's not a Christian any more.)

Here's a random sighting for you, today the first table I sat in my section at work was the lead singer of Seventh Day Slumber. We weren't sure until he paid and it had his band's name on his credit card. As much as their music sucks, it was a cool moment to find that your customer was someone you saw live when you were 15 or 16. I will say this, the man tipped well and was a perfect customer, which is all that matters when you're in my section.

No, he just wanted a Mai Tai with an extra shot of vodka, he likes his drinks STRONG.

And it would probably be more accurate to say someone there just started using crystal meth.

that's is REALLY cool to hear, b/c i hear so many stories, even from kids in my yg, of how the church people are the worst tippers and rudest customers.  what a crappy impression that makes on people.  but good to hear that about Joseph being the antithesis of that stereotype.

While I'm not surprised to hear that Christians are rude to the outside world, it does surprise me that they're specifically worse tippers than other people. I would assume the worst tippers are just people with poor math skills, or people who are stingy, and there are plenty of religious and non-religious folks alike who fit that description. But you've seen the data; I haven't.

I generally try to be very gracious and patient to waiters/restaurant staff because I figure any job where you're dealing with the general public expecting you to serve them all day will result in you getting walked on by the majority of people, who think you owe them something just because they walked through the door and became the customer. Even when I get iffy service, I tend to still tip the full 15%. I grew up watching my Mom be a pain in the ass and give penny tips when she got bad service - I'm not that bad, but occasionally if someone's really careless or rude to me, I might tip a little on the low side. If I feel like I'm getting a bad attitude from the wait staff, I might be a pain in terms of making sure they get me the things I want and don't charge me for stuff that wasn't done right or that I didn't order, etc. But I figure most of that sort of stuff is the restaurant's fault (like if the food is cooked badly), so the business should take the hit, not the person serving me. They should still be compensated for putting up with my griping.

One thing I have very little patience for when eating out or when ordering in places like coffee shops is when they're out of stuff, and they don't even bother to apologize for it, cover up whatever's not available on the menu (especially if it's some special they're running that is advertised on a huge poster you see right when you walk in the door), or suggest something else similar that I might like. My rule is "You should never be out of more than one thing", so if I try to order one thing, find out they ran out, order something else, and they're out of that too, I will probably make some irritated comment like, "So what are you not out of, then?" Because I figure being out of one thing sneaks up on you and it can take time to restock, but if you ran out of two things, then the people working there are probably too lazy or too apathetic to make a note of it and re-order or change the menu or whatever.

To sum up, I can be rude to these people, but only when I feel like they don't give a crap. If they're honestly trying to do their job well, I will go out of my way to be nice to them.
