During Sunday Night Football, I heard Anberlin's "Feel Good Drag" while cutting to a commercial just after one of the Green Bay Packers got leveled.  Also tonight, I heard The Civil Wars' "Baton Hollow" in an advertisement for the TV show Grimm.

I heard that Civil Wars song randomly in some store. I'm pleasantly surprised by the exposure they're getting.

Speaking of the Civil Wars, our pastor's son and his wife did "From this Valley" during the offertory at church yesterday morning.

Heard a familiar melody in an ad for the movie We Bought a Zoo, and realized it was the Katie Herzig song "Lost and Found".

This is more of a random music person sighting. At my company's Christmas party, it turns out one of my coworker's boyfriend was the touring bassist for Mae during the (a)fternoon tour after Mark Padgett left. I knew he was a musician, but I had never realized he played for a band I really like.

To be fair, you did use "boyfriend", singular.

In a similar "reverse sighting" vein, the former worship director from my church (Justis Kao, I pubbed a few of his songs way back when) can now be seen as a backup singer on X-Factor. Not that I particularly like X-Factor or any of those singing competition shows, but every career's gotta start somewhere I guess, and dude has a great voice, even though you're never gonna hear it by itself on this show.

I was watching last week's episode of Chuck, and I heard the song "We Are Young" near the end of the episode, so I said to my wife, "That sounds like fun.", which of course she interpreted as me saying that whatever the characters were doing onscreen seemed enjoyable.

Those who watch Portlandia already know this, but I'm playing catch-up, so humor me. Aimee Mann and Sarah MacLachlan were in an episode, as menial laborers. They're both good sports.

Every single Portlandia episode is probably gonna have one of these. This week's musical indie-celeb guest appearance will apparently be St. Vincent.

Gospel singer Anthony Evans (son of Tony Evans the pastor) made it onto NBC's The Voice last night...his coach is Christina.

So did an underrated mid-90's Christian pop singer named Tony Vincent, who seems light years removed from those days and has spent the past decade plus doing theater and Broadway type stuff...Jesus Christ Superstar, American Idiot, etc.  His coach is Cee-lo.

Not such a surprise to hear this song out and about in public, but funny given the context. My wife and I were watching a friend's tween-aged girls for a few hours this weekend, and we walked with them to a local mall where of course they dragged us into Hot Topic. I made a joke about the funny "Cookie Monster" growl of the death metal music they were playing at the time, and before too long, the music switched to Sleeping at Last's "Turning Page". I realize that Twilight was the connection, but the mood whiplash made me chuckle.

It was a good weekend for music sightings on TV. I'm trying to refrain from posting every single stinkin' one on Portlandia, but they had Joanna Newsom as the center of their opening sketch this week (in which her harp is rather painfully crammed into a small car), and Robin pecknold from Fleet Foxes also had a bit part in the same sketch. Then on SNL the next day, Justin Timberlake did a hilarious send-up of Bon Iver (basically accusing his music of putting everyone to sleep, but it was all in good fun).

Jonsi's "Around Us" was in the trailer for some nature film about the Arctic. I think there's a law somewhere that states his voice must be heard in every nature film remotely associated with Disney these days.

Since I previously mentioned Anthony Evans and Tony Vincent making it onto The Voice, I thought I'd update their journeys.

Anthony was in the final 'battle' of the first of four nights of six head to head battles (by the way the last 'battle' of the night each of the four weeks was basically the most hyped, most 'epic' matchups of the night), and lost a pretty epic battle to another African-American singer, who probably was slightly better than him, but Anthony didn't have anything to be ashamed of.

Tony Vincent was in the final of the 24 battles, the last one of the six on the fourth night of them and it was another pretty epic battle, this time with a guy who used to be in Carson Daly's house band.  Both guys are married and have kids/kids on the way, and the song choice was "Faithfully" by Journey and they both did amazing.  Two of the three other mentors favored the other guy, with one favoring Tony, and ultimately Cee lo, who had the final decision (and who was literally moved to tears by their practices with it), chose Tony as the winner which means he is one of the 24 who advances to the live shows starting April 2, although his first appearance will be the following week, April 9.

Between Tony Vincent and Tony Lucca (former Mouseketeer whose current music I listened to a bit of via Noisetrade the other day), The Voice this year would be a blast back to my teenage years, if I watched it, what I don't.

Some good soundtrack picks in the Blue Like Jazz movie... in addition to the expected jazz pieces, Over the Rhine and Katie Herzig make appearances with "All I Want for Christmas Is Blue" and "I Hurt Too", respectively.

"Sooner or Later" by Mat Kearney was played on tonight's The Biggest Loser episode as the three finalists went home for their welcome back for a few weeks before the finale
