Since I just finished watching Crash, I thought I'd poll you guys and see how many movies you've seen that have won the Oscar for Best Picture, and whether you liked them or not.

Here's my list.

2005: Crash (Liked it, but could have been better)
2003: The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (Loved it)
2001: A Beautiful Mind (Loved it)
1999: American Beauty (Sort of liked it, a bit too unsettling in places)
1998: Shakespeare in Love (Loved it)
1997: Titanic (Liked it, though it was a tad overdone)
1995: Braveheart (Way too gory; I only made it halfway through)
1994: Forrest Gump (Liked it)
1990: Dances with Wolves (Liked it, but the ending was unsatisfying)
1988: Rain Man (Liked it)
1984: Amadeus (Saw it in a class in high school, but I remember finding it amusing/interesting)
1964: My Fair Lady (Hated it, as I do all musicals)
1943: Casablanca (Liked it)
1930: All Quiet on the Western Front (Saw it in a class in high school, don't remember enjoying it)

Full list of winners is here if anyone needs their memory refreshed:

    * 1939 - Gone With the Wind (enjoyed it well enough at the time; no desire to see it again.)
    * 1943 - Casablanca (excellent film; liked it well enough the first time, caught a brief and random shot of it on tv and thought "whoa the way they set this up and shot it is so beautiful; what is it? it looks like Casablanca somehow" and was convinced of its greatness ever since. I own it.)
    * 1959 - Ben-Hur (enjoyed it a few times; no pressing desire to see it again any time soon. would recommend it be seen at least once.)
    * 1964 - My Fair Lady (I don't like musicals but this was enjoyable.)
    * 1965 - The Sound of Music (I enjoy it every 10 or 15 years or so.  consider it a must-see-at-least-once. I mean come on, if you don't know the do-re-mi song and its context, there is something wrong.)
    * 1972 - The Godfather (it was okay in some parts but overall I think I was bored.)
    * 1974 - The Godfather Part II (I don't really remember watching this.)
    * 1976 - Rocky (enjoyed it at the time. maybe I will see it again sometime.)
    * 1979 - Kramer vs. Kramer (enjoyed it at the time.)
    * 1983 - Terms of Endearment (compelling at the time but I don't remember much about it but I have the vague idea that it's emotionally manipulative.)
    * 1984 - Amadeus (excellent film. I own it but haven't seen it for a long time.)
    * 1988 - Rain Man (enjoyed it at the time but don't see what is so great about it.)
    * 1989 - Driving Miss Daisy (tried watching it, got bored, didn't finish. should probably try it again someday if I ever find myself in the mood.)
    * 1991 - The Silence of the Lambs (a hard movie to watch. not one that I can say I "enjoy", but very well done.)
    * 1992 - Unforgiven (I know I watched this and I think I enjoyed it well enough but I don't remember anything about it.)
    * 1993 - Schindler's List (excellent film. hard to watch but I would say it's a must-see.)
    * 1994 - Forrest Gump (hated it the first time, enjoyed it well enough the second. don't understand why it won an Oscar.)
    * 1995 - Braveheart (enjoyed it well enough but don't consider it that great.)
    * 1996 - The English Patient (heard it was good, gave it a try, found it extremely boring. but when I saw Naveen Andrews on Lost, I was like "ohhhh, he was the guy unwrapping his hair in that boring movie!" or something like that.)
    * 1997 - Titanic (groan. I hate this movie so. much.)
    * 1998 - Shakespeare in Love (enjoyed it well enough at the time.)
    * 1999 - American Beauty (didn't care for it the first time but I want to see it again.)
    * 2000 - Gladiator (see Braveheart)
    * 2001 - A Beautiful Mind  (enjoyed it, own it, but didn't need to buy it, as I never watch it.)
    * 2002 - Chicago (didn't think I would enjoy it but I did, kind of. don't consider it great though and probably will never watch it again. I had a lot of resentment towards this movie because it seemed so inane, the theme song was so annoying, and it won over The Two Towers.)
    * 2003 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (love it. own it. need to watch it again soon.)
    * 2004 - Million Dollar Baby (enjoyed it. need to watch it again sometime.)
    * 2005 - Crash (enjoyed it despite its heavyhandedness. would probably see it again. don't consider it great.)

1930- All Quiet on the Western Front (Watched it in my world history class senior year of high school; I was bored.)
1939- Gone with the Wind (Liked it okay.)
1961- West Side Story (I associate it with music class and my crazy-ass teacher in middle school, so I don't have fond memories.)
1967- In the Heat of the Night (Loved it.)
1972- The Godfather (In my top five favorite movies ever.)
1974- The Godfather Part II (Ditto^^)
1976- Rocky (It's okay I suppose, but all the sequels are not, and now it's such a punchline it's hard to take it seriously.)
1979- Kramer vs. Kramer (Really liked it.)
1990- Dances with Wolves (Didn't like it.)
1993- Schlinder's List (I love it, and own it, but I've only watched it once. It was difficult enough the first time. I just wanted to have it around.)
1996- The English Patient (Blah.)
1997- Titanic (I can appreciate the technical acheivement, but I only think it's okay.)
1998- Shakespeare in Love (Very funny and witty, but Best Picture? No.)
2001- A Beautiful Mind (Loved it.)
2003- The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (Loved it. Just not as much as the first two.)
2004- Million Dollar Baby (Loved it.)
2005- Crash (Blah.)

1939 - "Gone with the Wind"  (Liked it ok)
1941 - "Citizen Kane" (OK, so it didn't win.  It should have.  Let me have my illusion.)
1943 - "Casablanca" (Love it)
1954 - "On the Waterfront" (Excellent, although more for the early Brando than anything else)
1965 - "The Sound of Music" (has its moments.)
1967 - "In the Heat of the Night" (barely remember it, honestly.  I watched it in film class.)
(at this point, I must ask where the hell is Hitchcock's "Vertigo" and "Psycho".  The academy screwed plenty up back in the day as well, it appears)
1971 - "The French Connection" (ok for what it is, but it's no "Clockwork Orange")
1972 - "The Godfather" (love it)
1974 - "The Godfather Pt. 2" (love it to death)
1976 - "Rocky" (I like it, and I generally can't get into sports movies, but over "Taxi Driver"?)
1977 - "Annie Hall" (good.  "Star Wars" was more groundbreaking)
1988 - "Rain Man" (not bad)
I've seen parts of a lot of these 80s movies.  "Raging Bull" was great.
1991 - "The Silence of the Lambs" (Loved it)
1992 - "Unforgiven" (Very good)
1993 - "Schindler's List" (Very good, also, but I have little desire to sit through it again)
1994 - "Forrest Gump" (Quite good.  "Pulp Fiction" should have taken it this year, though)
1995 - "Braveheart" (a bit gory for me, but at its core, it's a very good movie)
1996 - "The English Patient" (kind of a snooze.  "Fargo" would have been a much better choice)
1997 - "Titanic" (OK, so I liked the movie ONCE.  Teenyboppers killed it)
1998 - "Shakespeare in Love" (clever.  I might have chosen "Private Ryan")
1999 - "American Beauty" (although I prefer "The Sixth Sense" for its Hitchcockian flair)
(2000 - haven't seen the winner, but I loved "Crouching Tiger". 2001, the same but loved LOTR)
2002 - "Chicago" (a little forgettable)
2003 - "LOTR:  ROTK" (Loved it, even recognizing this as an award for the new trilogy gold standard)
2004 - "Million Dollar Baby" (Excellent)
2005 - "Crash" (everything else nominated was better, but it wasn't bad)

So, 24 actual winners.

Dude, if we're gonna count nominees then I don't even know where to start. I loved CTHD and the first LOTR, but dude, a movie about a mathematician won for 2001. That's awesome.

A grand total of seven.

Million Dollar Baby (loved it)
LotR: RotK (loved it)
A Beautiful Mind (liked it, don't really want to see it again)
Gladiator (ditto)
Braveheart (pretty good, would be willing to see it again)
Forrest Gump (didn't really like it too much)
Rocky (not bad; my thoughts are in the latest movie thread)

I believe I have also seen Gone With the Wind and Ben-Hur, but my rule is, if I don't even remember whether I've seen it, I might as well not have Smiley

Obviously I don't watch many movies...

Yeah, well, I have Russell Crowe issues.  It looks to me like the schitzophrenia takes the spotlight from mathematics in the film, but you're right that I do need to catch it sometime.

1939 Gone with the Wind -- didn't like the ending
1964 My Fair Lady -- liked this pretty well
1965 The Sound of Music -- loved this
1995 Braveheart -- couldn't handle the grossness, but other than that I liked it
1997 Titanic -- I liked this ok although I can't stand DiCaprio
2001 A Beautiful Mind -- I really enjoyed this one a lot
2003 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King -- I love LotR
2005 Crash -- hard to watch, but I enjoyed it

Wow that list was a lot shorter than I expected it to be.

That was my main issue too, and that the main character was a terrible person who reminded me too much of an ex-girlfriend.

It could have ended halfway through and nobody would have noticed.

It's not really about math. I wouldn't be surprised if the equations and stuff they show in the film are just B.S. I think they were in Good Will Hunting, but I loved that film anyway.

I forgot; I had seen Schindler's List, but it was in class and I turned away during a lot of the gory parts, so I don't know if I can consider myself to have really watched it.

I recall a lot of violence, but not a lot of goryness in "Schindler's List".  It's been a while, though.

Gory things definitely happened to the people in those camps, so whether or not the movie graphically depicted such things, I certainly expected it to and didn't want to study it closely enough to find out how graphic it would choose to be. Possibly my mistake, but hey, I was 17.

I suppose I should note that I took a 5 minute bathroom break during the movie.  I never did see some kind of sexual scene others have alluded to in the movie.
