Finally got my turntable system together.
Technics SL-D3 (at the Salvation Army $25)
The cartridge and pre-amp I bought for it far exceeds the price of the player by about a factor of 4.

I didn't have the chance to compare it with anything other than my old player, but it absolutely kills it (as should be expected). I kept the old player around, though, since it plays tapes and has a radio (not to mention it would probably be best to reduce wear on the better stylus by playing records that aren't in great shape on the older one). I was looking at cartridges a few weeks ago, and that was the one I determined I would buy if I upgraded.

A wall hanging from my aunt as a housewarming gift: Nicely covers up a hole I had to put in the drywall for running ethernet. The kitty is made out of a very soft material (possibly felt, though I'm not a textile fancier so I can't say for sure) and begs to be petted

Yeah, the Sponge Bob face is priceless.
I just ordered Guitar Hero 3 (game only). I read too many negative reviews of the wireless guitar, so I'll just stick with the GH2 guitar.

I just noticed I had a 1930 wheat penny in my wallet. I don't really collect coins, but I do save wheat pennies and drummer boy quarters and state quarters and foreign coins when I come across them. I don't think I've ever randomly found such an old coin.

acquired a new-old piercing. one of the piercings in my right ear had partially closed up and I finally went to a proper piercing place to get it reopened. balance has been restored. (I had been wearing an odd number of earrings because I didn't want the other hole to close too.)

Acquired a new pair of glasses. I needed to get new lenses to correct a progressively worsening astigmatism in my left eye, and my insurance covers a yearly allowance for frames as well, so why not. I prefer having peripheral vision over style, so my nerd goggles are on the large side.

The screen on my iPod video 30G broke, and I've been wanting an iPod big enough for my whole library, so I bought an 120G Classic. Also bought a book called The Art of the Video Game... hoping to be a game artist someday

V for Vendetta by Alan Moore(graphic novel), Blankets by Craig Thompson, Good-bye, Chunky Rice also by Thompson, along with several books on photoshop, digital painting and fantasy art. Also 24 season 4 (now I'm only missing S6, and pretty soon I guess S7).

Interesting that it has an external cord. I have a similar floor lamp with an internal cord. On one hand, I think it looks more appealing, but on the other it makes it more of a pain to disassemble if the switch assembly breaks, which they have a distressing habit of doing.
Fortunately, this type of lamp sprouts like weeds around dumpsters at college campuses at move-out time, so if yours breaks you can probably nab a replacement for free come next May.

I don't mind the switch and cord being external. I thought it was interesting that the stem is made of four or five foot-long tubes screwed together. I shortened it by one tube since I want the lamp by the bed. that makes the switch lower and within easier reach while lying down. not a big deal, but an unexpected plus. anyway, the diffused light from above is much better than my previous makeshift setup of having a clip lamp pointed at me.

I totally read that as "four five-foot-long tubes" and was like o_O I shortened it by one tube since I want the lamp by the bed.
That's the other big benefit of the external cord. If you want to remove one tube from my lamp then you have to do some major surgery

if enough college students throw out these lamps, I could collect the foot-long tubes and have a 20-ft tall (or taller!) lamp that would make everyone who saw it go o_O ! the external cord means I could attach an extension cord or two or ten! my cheap lamp is made of so much win. and I'd better stop talking about it now lest it give out.

A pair of cleats.
About a month ago I found through a friend a group that plays ultimate frisbee on Saturday mornings. The first time I showed up, the leader, who was trying to divide up the teams evenly, asked: "How good are you?" Me: "I'm decent, but I haven't played in a while" Him: "Well, you're wearing sandals, so..." I look around, and everyone else is wearing running shoes or soccer cleats.
I think this is the first pair of closed-toed shoes I've bought myself ever and, other than my hiking boots, the only pair of lace-up shoes I own.
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
