the 7th book has a title! if you want to play the game, go to JK Rowling's site and click on the eraser to go to the Room of Requirement. click around and play hangman and discover the title. or google for it. (I don't want to spoil the fun for anyone who wants to play the game.)

Sad, I just got an email from Borders telling me the title! Hangman would have been way more fun. As a sidenote, when I lived in the dorms, one of the girls on our hall moved out mysteriously and wasn't ever really replaced. Her roommate moved in with two of the other girls on the hall, leaving a free room, which we used to study in, watch movies, etc. We called it the Room of Requirement.

a couple local Borders stores are having a Hallows Ball on the night of the 20th so folks can buy the book at midnight. sometimes I am a sucker for such things so I think I'll go, rather than order from Amazon. I hadn't gotten on the Harry Potter bandwagon until recently, and this will be my first time and last chance to get the newest book and read it as soon as it comes out. it's fun, right?

Is it? I admit I pre-ordered The Children of Húrin on Amazon, but I actually didn't read it "as soon as it came out". But if you want to surround yourself with the throng of humanity to get a book you could easily order online, I guess that's your call.

I dunno--that's what I want to find out. if it was just a stand-in-line thing I wouldn't go but it's a Hallow's Ball. and I've never been to a ball. maybe it's not all that fun but I'm curious, and I have a habit of going to Borders on Friday nights till midnight anyway. (nerd) I also want an excuse to wear bring out my Gryffindor scarf. (nerdnerd) besides, even though the Amazon thing guarantees the book will arrive by the 21st, maybe I'd rather stay up till the wee hours of the morning reading, rather than waiting all afternoon for a delivery person to arrive. (nerdnerdnerd) I suppose it could arrive on Friday but I wouldn't be able to read it right away. (work) I suppose I might not feel like reading it right away but I remember a friend doing that the other year and I want to try it to see how fun it is. (nerdnerdnerdnerd)

Yeah, we pre-ordered the book at Books-a-Million, so we got a call from "Professor McGonagall" reminding us of the party from 9-12. I'll likely go - they usually have some fun things for the kids to do, and then I can pick up the book at the end of the party.
Should we dress our kids up as Hogwarts students, or is that going too far? (We've done that once before, even putting a fake scar on my son's forehead.)

If you're into that sort of thing and your kids want to do it, I'd say go for it. The only one who should be deciding whether it's "too far" or not is you and your kids.

If the kids protest, it won't be until later when we're showing their future significant others their pictures. We have no naked baby photos (we agreed early on this as we hate them), so we have to get some blackmail cute childhood snapshots.
My fear about dressing myself or the kids up in costume has more to do with whether others will do the same. This dates as early as an Easter party when I was in kindergarten.

I don't know about the BAM party, but the Borders and B&N parties specify that folks are invited to dress up. they could even win prizes and stuff. apart from my Gryffindor scarf, I don't have any other costume-worthy apparel. I'm usually not into dressing up, but I'm starting to think it would be fun. if there was a quick, easy way to get my hair pink or purple I'd go as Tonks.

Cosplay has never been something I'm into, but regardless if you're the only one or if there's a bunch of you, I suspect there will be an equal number of people who think it's neat and who think it's stupid. But really, if I liked that sort of thing, I would rather look at photos and remember the time I dressed up and geeked out at the book launch than remember the time I was diffident and felt kind of bad about it afterwards.

just got back from Borders. I had arrived there after work, around 9:30pm. that is, I arrived at the parking lot at that time and was astonished that the lot and the surrounding lots were packed. purchasing began at midnight and I paid for my copy at 1:20 or so. there were still a ton of people waiting. anyway, I'm off to prepare some butterbeer and start reading soon but I wanted to log in and mention that lots of folks were dressed up. there were at least two Tonkses and two Dementors, a Molly Weasley, a crapton of generic Hogwarts students, and one escapee from Azkaban. there was even a guy dressed up as Jesus. or maybe John the Baptist. he had a lean and locusty look about him.

Our store used a voucher system, so the first person in line went through as 12:01, and I probably got mine maybe 10 or 20 minutes later. What took a while was the license and registration checkpoint on the way home.

As we got on Rt. 36 to go home toward Hopewell, the police had a checkpoint for drivers to show license and registration before proceeding. I thought it was kind of dumb.

Come on bloop, don't leave us hanging...were there costumes involved or not? I know what butterbeer is (the girls in our pictionary group are big HP fans), but it still sounds nasty...butter plus beer? Ugh.

yes, inquiring minds want to know!
maybe you know this but butterbeer isn't butter + beer. it's more like butterscotch. the recipes I've seen call for cream soda + butterscotch syrup/topping for a kid-friendly version and cream soda + butterscotch schnapps for grownups. it's supposed to be just strong enough to have a warming effect, but house elves get a little tipsy. some recipes do call for a bit of melted butter to be mixed in but that doesn't really add anything but oiliness.
the store I went to had a color-coded wristband system. those who had pre-ordered and got there really early got silver wristbands and were the first to get the book at 12:01. I had pre-ordered and got a green wristband. our section wound around the cd shelves and to the back of the store. there were at least 3 or 4 colors before us and at least 3 more colors after. I heard that that store in particular had been featured on two different news channels. sounds like it was the biggest Borders bash in the area. there was a dj and facepainting and games and stuff but the things that I thought were the coolest were the plush red carpet at the entrance and the 15-foot (zigzagged) snake cake with five flavors.

As it ended up, we were in too much of a hurry to get there this time, or we really would have. We dressed up as muggles. Suffice it to say that we didn't win the costume contest. There's always the movies.

I was at a resteraunt. I ordered a chicken sandwich, but I don't think the waitress understood me. Cuz she said "how would you like your eggs?". So I tried to answer her anyhow, I said incubated, and then raised, and then beheaded, and then plucked, and then cut up, and then put on a grill, and then put on to a bun. Right, I actually did know that, but I realize my post made it sound like I didn't. When I said it sounds nasty, I didn't mean that the recipe sounds nasty, but that the name does. Not that the recipe sounds like something I would want to drink either, but at least it doesn't sound like something that would potentially induce vomiting.

ah, okay. I can understand why the word "butterbeer" sounds disgusting but for some reason I always liked the sound of it. it's fun to say. butterbeer, butterbeer. if you think about it, "root beer" could sound like fat dirty old roots sitting in beer (gross) but of course we know it's tastier than that. =)
