I administer four computers and five virtual machines; I don't use automatic updates on all of them, since I usually prefer to pick and choose which updates get installed when, but for the computers that I don't exercise such exacting control over, auto updates is a nice feature (minus the little thing that pops up every four minutes telling you to reboot).

You think the other joke was bad, try this one:

What do you get when you cross a chicken and a cow? Think about it.

Also, I got my Calc II test back tonight and it got a freakin' C! I was kinda pissed off as he was extremely unfair about how he took off points.

I get all babytalky with animals, especially kitties. even with boring aquarium fish, I feel compelled to squeal "feeeesh!" at them when I pass by. but I don't get babytalky with babies.

so I'm taking this digital publishing class and the instructor is Chinese and was talking about needing to get some more goldfish. apparently Chinese people believe that fish absorb bad chi or something. so you can be happy your fish died because that means they absorbed all the bad luck that would have fallen on you (and that is falling on you until you get more fish)!  wacko

more relevant to the class, we learned why we do not doublespace after the end of a sentence when typesetting: the software automatically adds the correct amount of space.

XD well it does say "find", not "solve", so...
it would have been funny if the person had drawn an elephant over the x and wrote "can't. there is an elephant in the way".

I just got back from helping plant trees by LAX. there was this bare median on Imperial Hwy and now it is lined with over 100 young trees. spreading mulch is hard work, but yay, trees! this was the first time I did anything for Arbor Day. it's actually kind of nice. maybe it will be my new favorite holiday. (my old favorite holiday was St. Patrick's Day, not because of drinking alcohol or dyeing rivers green or whatnot but just because it's kinda fun to wear green and it's nice to see people wearing green.)

My favorite holiday is Talk Like a Pirate Day, followed closely by International Respect for Chickens Day. I also like it that in Japan, Vernal Equinox day is actually considered a holiday.

I forgot today was arbor day, but fittingly, I planted a maple tree in our backyard today. The drawback to newer homes is developers feel like they have to scrape every last tree off the land before they can build ... and I love me some trees.

I like the ideas behind International Respect For Chickens Day and Dress Like a Ninja Day (I believe it's the same as Talk Like A Pirate Day) but I haven't seen any other people observing those days so they're not as fun. I dunno, I just like seeing a bunch of people wearing green or going out and planting trees.

by the way, today might not be Arbor Day for you--it varies by state.

edited to add: well there is a National Arbor Day in April, but individual states can also have their own Arbor Days that fit better with the best tree-planting times. apparently California has Arbor Week rather than just a day.

anyway, yay for planting trees! I used to live in the middle of the woods in the middle of nowhere and the idea of cutting down a few trees for firewood or lumber didn't bother me, but now that I'm in a big city where there aren't that many trees, it does bother me to see big old trees get cut down for development or convenience purposes.

Charlotte is officially my new least-favorite airport. However, the weather in North Carolina is nicer than the weather in western Virginia at the moment, so I might yet find forgiveness in my heart.

what is it about the Charlotte airport that you don't like? I've been through once or twice and don't remember anything especially horrid about it. I thought the Memphis airport was a stupid, ugly airport. O'Hare is big but I think it's pretty and I like it.

Well, when I went through, all flights in and out were delayed by at least 30 minutes. Also, the outgoing flights are displayed on dingy TV screens few and far apart, and my flight for some reason wasn't listed, and the employees I asked about it were very apathetic (thankfully, and ironically, I didn't miss my flight because it was, you guessed it, delayed). Also, many of the moving sidewalks were out of order, and despite the fact that terminal C (my destination) was about a kilometer from terminal E (my arrival point), there was no form of transportation other than the sidewalks. Not that I hate it, but well-organized high-tech airports like Atlanta and Seattle-Tacoma and Dallas-Ft. Worth are nice (I also like some smaller, friendlier airports like McGee-Tyson and Roanoke). San Jose was pretty poorly designed, but it gets credit for having shelves in the bathroom, so when you go in there you don't have to set your luggage on the floor. I haven't been to O'Hare yet, but I'm going to be there sometime this week (my schedule is all-over enough that I don't recall exactly when).

The Charlotte airport definitely did not endear itself to me again on the way back. The worst part was that the plane, a turboprop rather than a jet, was apparently loaded over its weight capacity. To rectify this, they decided to remove five pieces of luggage. This would have been OK, but they didn't tell anyone about this; as we were leaving, the guy behind me was like "excuse me, my luggage appears to be out there on the tarmac", and the flight attendant said "yeah, we had to remove some to make the weight limit". I thought for a moment we were going to have an incident, since I was sure he was going to throttle her with his bare hands. I possibly would have (however, I never check baggage if I can help it. I travel light enough that I can fit all I need for a few days in my backpack and laptop bag; the backpack is small enough for carry-on, and the laptop bag counts as a personal item).

uch. is it just me or does it seem like flying is even more of a hassle than ever? a cow-orker recently had a Dallas to LA flight delayed by 36 hours because of bad weather in Chicago I guess. eh??

whenever I fly into NC, whether it's Charlotte or the smaller Winston-Salem airport, it's always a small plane. that makes the list of things I don't like, simply because having to wobble down the steps and have the humid Southern air (sometimes with rain) blast me in the face is not a pleasant welcome.

Considering that my flight to Roanoke got canceled so I'm in our nation's illustrious capital right now, I would have to agree with that statement :P

I'm tempted to move Washington Dulles (OK, which really isn't in DC, but it bears the name) on top of my list of airports I don't like, but I suppose I am biased due to extenuating circumstances. I was also not too impressed with O'Hare--given how many gates it has, it really needs some moving sidewalks. OTOH, I have had nothing but good experiences with the Seattle-Tacoma airport; I've been there four times, and in all four they dealt with the volume of passengers very efficiently and were very friendly.

The phorum calendar claims that today is the vernal equinox, when it is clearly tomorrow. Someone needs to be beaten.

so I was thinking about this equinox thing and my calendar says it was at 12:07am GMT. so that was nighttime yesterday here in the US. maybe that has something to do with the discrepancy.

I thought we set our time zone in our phorum settings so I was going to change to GMT and see what the calendar said, but I guess that was the old board...or the old version...or something old.

The current phorum time is set to Pacific time, presumably because that's where the server is located. You can change your local offset in Look and Layout Preferences under the profile options. That might explain it; on the calendar, it looked like it was a day (like St. Patrick's Day) rather than a time, but I guess it does happen at a certain time, so the calendar might be right after all O_o.

Having class outside on a 75-degree day, in a month when the pollen hasn't had time to invade my nasal passages yet, is the greatest thing EVER.

Take that back, the aforementioned situation and then finding out immediately afterwards that TUBBY SMITH IS LEAVING is the greatest thing ever.  As long as UK doesn't hire Tom Crean or something.

Computer science classes are never held outside. Not only are there no power outlets, some of us might actually burst into flames after 50 minutes of continuous sunlight (the longest exposure many have had since age six).

Pretty sure that's from IPB. SMF is a lot less sophisticated, using the system time of the machine it's running on, plus an administrator-defined global offset, plus user-defined individual offsets.
