Everyone knows New York is God's state!!!!
If that's the case, why does it get hit with so many natural disasters?

"I reprove, and chastise whom I love", dontcha know.
today I have jury duty. I don't know how it's done in other states, but here we are on call for 5 days to find out if we have to report at the courthouse. if we do, we wait around in a room to find out if we get assigned to a case. I didn't have to go in Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, but today I have to be there. and tomorrow is a court holiday (Cesar Chavez Day). anyway, so far no jurors have been needed at all. I brought my ipod, two knitting projects, an old issue of Paste (Bright Eyes article), and a book (The Complete Father Brown). a few tables had in-progress puzzles on them. it's actually pretty nice. I heard that in the old days the juror assembly room was in the basement right next to the place they keep prisoners. we got out early (11:30) for lunch and don't have to be back till 1:30. if I heard correctly, there are just 2 more cases to be heard today and they are trying to get one thrown out. so it sounds like a short afternoon. nice. I feel like I should be getting away with something during this time but I just came back to the house to eat leftovers and check the intarweb.

today I was riding in a car and noticing how much it bothers me when the driver doesn't drive smoothly. not just stopping suddenly but slowing down abruptly and accelerating again abruptly. I don't get carsick but I got kind of dizzy. and I wondered if I drive like this too but just don't notice it or what. (I don't think I drive like this; I try to keep my foot lightly and steadily on the accelerator rather than pressing, releasing, pressing, and releasing again.) someone had told me one time that he gets sick if someone else accelerates and brakes suddenly but doesn't get sick when he himself does. (when I ride with this person I'm perpetually frightened at his speed and how close he gets to objects before he applies the brakes abruptly.) also I remember complaining to someone else about her jerky driving but she didn't know what I was talking about. anyone else notice this sort of thing?

Absolutely. I try to ease on and off the accelerator and brake but I tend to go a little faster than I realize, so I slide to stops a little bit. It's fine when it's just me, but I'm more careful when other people are riding along. My cousin is the worst at herky-jerky driving; I don't get carsick but I've felt like puking when riding along with her.

I am ashamed to say that, being as busy as I am right now, I completely forgot about April Fools' Day. Although I suspect my little phorum pranks usually serve to annoy as much as amuse, I try to do something, and topping the hideous color-scheme change of last year was going to be fun. However, I notice that Google did manage to remember.

here's a harrowing story involving a renowed author of knitting books, an event booked for April Fool's Day, O'Hare airport, and the kindness of strangers. (it's a blog entry, and comments take up about 7/8 of the page, so be not dismayed at the length of the page.)

Wow, that makes my 'ordeal' look trivial (to be fair, I was always aware that I probably had it better than you average traveler who was stranded in DC on that fateful day, as I had nowhere I needed to be afterwards and someone else was paying for it). But even in my situation, I had a taste of the random kindness of strangers. I also admire her sangfroid at the beginning of it all in avoiding freaking out at the hotel person who absolutely failed her.

The Children's Cancer Fund of America sent me a brochure a few days ago. On the front, it showed a girl (presumably with cancer) and the words "Sometimes growing up can be so very hard to do...".
No shit, Sherlock. Doesn't this seem cruel to anyone else? Maybe on their next brochure they'll dispense with the subtlety and say "it sucks because you're going to die".

UPS delivered a package two days before the estimated delivery date. If they're not busy owning me by being slow, they're busy owning me by being unexpectedly fast (at least they left it at the office this time instead of the usual "dur, you weren't here when I came to deliver it, so I'll come by tomorrow at the exact same time that you were gone at work today").

You know, I consider myself (unfortunately) a bit of a misanthrope, but one of my friends makes me look like the writer of the Barney song--you know, "I love you, you love me," etc. etc. sappy-awfulness. It really wears on me to hear such unbridled annoyance with all other human life, and makes me check myself before I say things like that. Blessing in disguise? I don't know.

The only way this could possibly be better is if it were made into a Broadway musical (but it's still pretty sweet).

Thanks, it's under control now. I keep forgetting that HTML tags require quotes around the URL but the SMF interpretation of BBC breaks if you use quotes.

heh, what cracked me up was not the "swim across the Atlantic Ocean" (although that was funny) but the roads named after liquids. Water St. and Milk St. apparently the swimming directions only work for the Atlantic. I tried Los Angeles to various parts of Asia but they were all no-gos. I love NYC to London and its roundaboutness.

I discovered that no matter where you depart from, the only point at which the atlantic ocean becomes navigable is boston harbor on our side and le havre, france on the other. That's why I chose those endpoints.

in honor of IRfCD, allow yourself to be entertained by this blog entry starring Helen the chicken. she had been a pet but was dropped off unceremoniously in the writer's yard one day. (there is more of Helen's story, as well as great pics and stories of other chickens and animals in the June archive.)

Obviously the writer has much more respect for chickens than I do. Helen would have learned from me in short order that it pays to not be an annoyance when you taste so good on the dinner table.

Also, my bout with food poisoning was thankfully mild enough that I appear to be over it now, so I kicked off the day's celebrations by eating three fetal chickens (in egg form) before work. I plan on further showing my respect tonight by grilling some boneless chicken breasts.

I believe for something to be considered fetal it has to be somewhat developed. and if the eggs were store-bought and laid by battery hens they wouldn't have been fertile anyway.

something I've been wondering: is it common for employers to refer to employees as "bodies"? such as "we need to hire another body". to me that sounds demeaning, as if a person is just a body. or it could be any sort of body, like a dead body, animal or human. it could even be a zombie or a mannequin. "we need to hire roadkill and zombies". maybe for some places that might not be too far off...

We had a tech come out to look at our DSL a couple days ago. After testing everything he could think of, he decided the problem was our modem. We have a new modem supposedly arriving today...but yesterday, the DSL connection was freaking rock solid. This morning (and mornings/afternoons are usually the worst; evenings are generally decent) it was working when I woke up and has been working since. I plan on stress-testing it today, and if it works then I guess Verizon fixed something on their end without telling me.

http://lifehacker.com/software/why-didn.t-we-think-of-this-sooner/digitize-books-while-you-prove-youre-human-with-recaptcha-263716.phpInteresting link of the day, and also an interesting application of distributed processing. It would be interesting to know how much time it takes a distributed system like this to transcribe an entire text versus how much time it would take for a single human to go through all the words the OCR broke on and correct them (this is especially interesting given the double-checking feature present in the system...it would also be nice to see a study determining the effects of malicious attempts to foil the system on the efficiency of the distributed processing).
