I must confess, I downloaded and listened to their two radio songs, My Immortal and Bring Me to Life. I really can't judge songs by the way they are on the radio(bad sound quality), but through my headphones, they sound much better. To tell the truth, I actually like the songs. My Immortal is my personal favorite, except for the annoying random pauses with the weird swishing noise. I have now idea what those are for. Good for you, Dv! =D My Immortal is one of my favorite slow songs (Wow! Rokran likes slow songs!). I have gotten several "swooshy" tracks off Kazaa myself. So annoying.

I was thinking that the swooshy thing might be OK if they put up all the "swooshified" songs from the alcum, and you could download them. Since downloading is not a substitute for buying, it would an OK preview. But putting them on a filing sharing service, thats just mean.

Yeah, shame on them to try and keep you from stealing what they sell.
And My Immortal is a GREAT song.

I would never file share again if artists had "swooshed" songs on their websites. True enough. I think they're counting on the "swooshed" versions that are downloaded by unwitting fans to outnumber the legit versions. Again, if people would delete files or at least unshare them once they realize they're bogus, that would help the file sharing community greatly. NP: "The Table", Riley Armstrong

I don't dislike them for that. I just think that they're a little over-saturated, as if they are the best thing that came out this year or something when it's just really a nice little album that could.

I just think that they're a little over-saturated, as if they are the best thing that came out this year or something when it's just really a nice little album that could. Well, they are my second favorite new artist of the year (Steven Delopoulos takes the gold so far) but admittedly, I haven't had as much time to dig for hidden trasure in newbie-land this year. I'm also a sucker for nu-metal-type riffage (though I wish ben Moody did a little more than just that on several occasions) and monster pop hooks, which are two things that often drive you away, so there's your reasoning. I also love their lyrics. NP: "Different Kind of Free", ZOEgirl

Good call on Delopoulos. He's the only new artist so far that is making my top 20 suggestions for the year. Everyone else up there for me are veterans, which kind of makes sense when you think about it.

Good new artists from this year:
Damien Rice (A-) Steven Delopoulos (A-) Derek Webb (Really doesn't count, I guess, but it's a solo debut, anyway... A-) Dakona (C+... maybe B- when I'm in a good mood)
Of those four, only Rice and Webb make my Top 5, but Delopoulos would easily fit into the Top 10. Which ain't bad at all, considering that he's up against such heavy-hitters as Over the Rhine, Radiohead, David Bowie, Daniel Lanois, and Switchfoot.

Well, I would assume Webb counts as a new artist just as much as Delopoulos does. They're both singer/songwriters who are no longer members of the bands that they were in.
Anyway, Webb would make my list of good new artists from this year as well. Others include Dakona, Big Dismal, and Fiction Plane. Sanctus Real would make the cut if their album hadn't released on Christmas Eve!

I saw Sanctus Real live, and I liked them. I probably won't buy any albums of theirs, but I was pleasantly surprised. Perhaps it was just the contrast to Pillar, who I didn't like at all Josh: I know what you mean about the 'over-produced' feel, but it doesn't bother me that much, except on Bring Me To Life which (as bloop mentioned) has been spammed on the airwaves a little too much.

Well, I'd rate Sanctus Real and Fiction Plane at 3 to 3.5 stars each, I'm not fascinated with either band, but I enjoy both from time to time. As I mentioned earlier, my new artist list for the year is rather scant.

Actually, I don't enjoy that album as much as I did yesterday (I'll explain why in another thread if anyone wants to know), but Rice is still my new artist pick for this year, probably. Excluding Derek Webb.

I have yet to get to Damien Rice, but my sister dated a Damien Rice once. He was a nice guy, but I don't think he was Irish (he was black).
I like Delopoulos's album a bit more than Webb's, but both are in my current top 20, which is good for them. It's gone through a lot of revision, but here it is right now:
Best of 2K3 1 Over the Rhine - Ohio 2 Radiohead - Hail to the Thief 3 OutKast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below 4 Guided By Voices - Earthquake Glue 5 Starflyer 59 - Old 6 Steven Delopoulos - Me Died Blue 7 Spiritualized - Amazing Grace 8 Blur - Think Tank 9 Super Furry Animals - Phantom Power 10 Cat Power - You Are Free 11 The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium 12 The Innocence Mission - Befriended 13 The White Stripes - Elephant 14 Derek Webb - She Must and Shall Go Free 15 Switchfoot - The Beautiful Letdown 16 Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers 17 Zwan - Mary, Star of the Sea 18 Ben Folds - Speed Graphic EP 19 Microphones - Mount Eerie 20 Wilco - Australian EP
I finally have a list of 20 albums that at least like a lot, and everything in the top ten is pretty spectacular. OutKast could beat Radiohead by years' end, but I doubt it. They kind of come off as my token pick for the hip-hop/rap thing, but I guess it's just the style I know least. I think they are at least trying to do something a little more progressive in that style, I just hope this isn't it. More than just shades of the foreshadowing that was the Beatles self-titled "White Album".
Other notable additions are Guided by Voices and Starflyer 59.

12 The Innocence Mission - Befriended
Arrgh! I STILL haven't heard this one. If it's as good as Glow, though, it'll easily make my Top 5. If it's as good as Birds then it'll clock in at #2.

Befriended is very good, but pretty stripped-down, which is a style that I tend to less. That's why I call these my 20 suggestions. The order would definitely see changes by people with different priorities. I just try to make a list that I can be pretty confident in recommending to others.

What is it about this band that you pholks enjoy so much? I already explained. Let's hear from the others. (My suspicion is that a number of factors make them likeable to most folks - semi-aggressive rock band with a female lead singer, extremely catchy choruses with a little bit of crunch to them, spiritual lyrics without the necessity of playing it entirely "safe" like most CCM bands would, plus the boys all think Amy Lee is hot.)

I agree... especially the female singer part. Amy's voice is awesome, and something you don't see very often in rock. I don't think Amy's hot, though. I think she looks kind of strange myself. And her clothing is very strange.

I think they have a fairly unique sound. They have a female lead singer, they incorporate some interesting sonic elements into their songs. Their problem? While they have a unique sound, they don't ever stray from it. There is also that "all crescendo" thing, which I think is totally true, having now heard the album. I think they need to make a little more effort to mix up their sound. Origin is more varied than Fallen, though. Just goes to show how commercialization sucks the soul at of music, many times. I say we kill the big labels! Indie only! Or not....
