The list will almost certainly change within the next month-- I have still yet to see Pan's Labyrinth, Letters from Iwo Jima, Little Children, and numerous other films that are coming with high critical praise-- but, for now, here are my favorite movies of the past year.

I've seen eight of your top ten, and seven of those are in my top ten as well. (We have the same number one.) So, what I'm trying to say is, great picks!

Yeah, I haven't seen many movies this year, but everything I saw on your list was great (Melquiades, The New World).

My Top 10 lists in this area are becoming increasingly less respectable to serious movie buffs. What can I say, I like CGI animation, sci-fi, and comedy. (Though I don't normally like "Christian" movies; this year was an exception.)

1. Cars
2. Little Miss Sunshine
3. End of the Spear
4. The Second Chance
5. Over the Hedge
6. X-Men 3: The Last Stand
7. Deja Vu
8. Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest
9. Thank You for Smoking
10. Monster House

9. Thank You for Smoking
I didn't realize you had seen that.  Have you read the book?  It's funnier than the movie, which is quite a feat...

And my top flicks released in 2006, not that anyone cares...
The Prestige
A Scanner Darkly
Thank You For Smoking
Lucky Number Slevin

Other stuff that was fun, but doesn't make the cut in terms of movies I would actually buy...
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
We Are Marshall
The Illusionist (Edward Norton was good)

Have yet to see:
Little Miss Sunshine
Stranger Than Fiction

Best films I saw in 2006 that weren't released in 2006:
Breaking Away (best movie no one's heard of)
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (I'm serious, this movie is hilarious)
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Psycho (original . . . surprisingly, I hadn't seen it all the way through before last year)
Sixteen Candles
The Breakfast Club (don't mess with John Hughes)
Gallipoli
Chariots of Fire (for real, I hadn't seen it before last year)
A Bridge Too Far

Crimes Against Cinema (any release year that I saw for the first time in 2006)
High Tension
Saw II
The Omen
X3 (should have been SO much better)

overall I didn't think 2006 was a great year for movies. there are still some December and indie releases that I still want to see but haven't got the chance yet though.

the best:
L'Enfant
Little Miss Sunshine
A Scanner Darkly
The Prestige
Babel

enjoyed well enough and would see again:
PotC2
Friends With Money

enjoyed well enough at the time I guess but probably wouldn't see again:
Brick
Art School Confidential

watched/dozed through on a plane for lack of anything better to do (unfortunately):
16 Blocks
Firewall
The Shaggy Dog

eh:
Don't Come Knocking
V For Vendetta

the biggest disappointment (but it had some good parts):
X3
(the best part of this movie was the alternate ending with Bobby and Rogue.)

notable 2005 movies that I saw after thay came out on dvd in 2006:

Ushpizin
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
Munich
Walk the Line
Corpse Bride
Proof
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
The Squid and the Whale
A History of Violence

notable other discoveries:
(this section alone would make 2006 a great year for movies/tv for me)
Lost
Firefly/Serenity
Heroes
Arrested Development
Veronica Mars
Harry Potter (finally getting into the books made me enjoy the movies more)
Aliens
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
My Neighbor Totoro
Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies)
Danny Deckchair

finally saw:
Sunset Boulevard
Rashomon

Wow, schil... discovering Firefly and Arrested in the same year really DOES make it, like, the best year ever. For me, that's the TV equivalent of discovering, I dunno, U2 and Over the Rhine in the same year.  happy

I'd say the same for discovering Lost and Battlestar Galactica in the same year. Discovering Heroes makes it a trifecta! (But I think it was Alda who discovered those all in one year; I can't be sure.)

I should add Heroes to my list.
I watched the miniseries disc of BSG last year but don't consider having officially discovered it yet. I'm kind of like "okay, pholks who like some of the same shows I do really like this and I want to see what happens next" but am waiting for netflix to send me the next disc (which has a long wait).

I liked the ending where Rogue didn't take the cure, I thought it was an improvement.

the best:
A Scanner Darkly
The Prestige

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that...most people who listed ASD are all into the artsy-weird flicks and nothing else, and then The Prestige has been totally glossed over as far as I've seen.

the biggest disappointment (but it had some good parts):
X3
(the best part of this movie was the alternate ending with Bobby and Rogue.)

Amen.  I mean, I enjoyed watching Hugh Jackman reprising Wolverine, but . . . mostly lame.  The alternate ending was much better.

What really annoyed me was Storm's speech to Rogue about how their powers are gifts.

Storm can control the weather, Rogue kills everyone she touches, in conclusion, Storm should shut the eff up.

heh, exactly.
Storm's lines (and Berry's delivery) have always been pretty awful, and she talked WAYYYY too much in X3. (she did have better hair in X3 than before though.)

I discovered Lost and BSG in the same fiscal year- both in November, no less. Best month ever!
