Here's the Relient K link. I can't find clips anywhere yet, so this is to download the full album. For those who don't want to partake, there are two songs currently in the Pub (one from me and one from NinjaRob). http://www.f-forge.com/?d=unxvhSVd1MykiRYHp4gf

While I'm at it, I'll announce the first theme round so you can get a pick ready for that.
"The Saga Begins", which will entail reviewing the debut cd from a veteran artist. Minimum of 10 years recording, so no debut from any later than 1997.
For instance, you could do Jars of Clay's debut, but not Earthsuit's.

Voting is now closed.
So, on to the rating.
I had a major worry with this album. I was afraid it would be half of a Starflyer 59 album and half of a Joy Electric album. As it stands, the album suceeds in meshing the two styles together so it avoids seeming that way. However, the album doesn't strike me as being as memorable as either brother's recent work apart from this collaboration. There are a few songs towards the end that range from mediocre to boring. Most of Ronnie's work on the album is quite memorable, while only a couple of Jason's songs are particualrly memorable, those they are standouts. Communication, Opportunities, Fears To Remember, Missionary, and The Deaf, They Will Hear are excellent songs. 5 great songs, 3 pretty good songs, and a couple boring songs. Overall, I like it, but I don't love it. I can't really give the album more than a B.
So, 4 stars.

I'll give Dolorean a 4. It's very nice, and very pretty, but nice and pretty don't really add up to anything especially gripping or memorable.
For the theme round, I'll do Rod Stewart-- The Rod Stewart Album.

I was pleasantly surprised with the first part of Knuckles Up. It was catchy and fun - not musically great or anything, just a good time in sonic format. However, as the album progressed, my interest with the album regressed. I thought maybe a few more spins would give me better insight on the second half of the album, but it didn't. Even though the album is less than 40 minutes long, it seemed to drag heavily by the end. It was a decent start, but nothing great, really. A B for the first half and a C- for the second half = C+, or 3 stars. Standout tracks include "Brotherhood", "Knuckles Up" and "Battle of Bones".
For the next round I'll do Stavesacre - Friction.

I'll continue posting my verdict in my "formal report" format since it works so well for me.
Album Reviewed: Wincing The Night Away - The Shins
Pros: The Shins obviously paid a lot of attention to instrumentation and musical texturing, and that's a very easy way to hit my musical "sweet spot." I also like the laid-back retro-style of the album quite a bit. The album also has quite a bit of stylistic variation without sounding too disjointed. This album does tend to be a bit of a slow burner, and several tracks really grew on me after listening to them a few times. Standout songs for me included the first single, "Phantom Limb" and the electronically-dominated "Red Rabbits."
Cons: I had quite a few issues with the lyrics. For one thing, some of the songs have rather disturbing imagery, with the worst offender being "A Comet Appears" in which one verse references carving one's face off. (Ewwwwww.) I could probably stomach this a bit more if I knew the point of it all, hence leading me to my other big complaint about the lyrics. They are so cryptic that I had a hard time figuring out what they were talking about. I don't have a problem with slightly cryptic lyrics, but this was a bit much. Additionally, there were a few songs that didn't quite live up to their potential, most notably "Sea Legs", which was ruined by some unnecessary noodling at the end of the song. Even worse was "Black Wave", which just sounded like a complete mess to me.
The Bottom Line: The Shins did a lot of things right with this album, and I can honestly say I enjoy this one musically. However, issues with the lyrics and a few subpar songs keep this from being a great album.
The Verdict: All things considered, this album grades out at a solid "B" for me, which for the purpose of this game is 4 stars. However, I can tell The Shins have an "A"-grade album in them.
On Deck For Next Week: Touch - Sarah McLachlan
P.S. Rob, I had a similar reaction to you on the F56 album, although I think I graded it slightly higher than you did.

Relient K gets 4 stars from me. I really like the album, but the love songs on the album ("The Best Thing", "Must Have Done Something Right", "I'm Taking You with Me") really need to try harder - they're fun, but a little too insipid. "Faking My Own Suicide" is slightly amusing, but also makes me cringe at the thought of guys who would do jerky things like that to get attention in real life. It's really more pathetic than funny. I also don't feel that "Plead the Fifth", as cool as it is, works as an intro track, and the way it leads into "Come Right Out and Say It" feels more like something you'd hear in the middle of an album rather than at the beginning.
I just named the only things that keep it from being better than Mmhmm and getting five stars. There's still tons to love - the biggest gems are the single "Forgiven" and the highly creative, highly emotional, and sometimes even funny "Deathbed", which ruminates on a serious subject with a unique wit that few bands can pull off. That's one of few songs that can make me chuckle and also make me try to choke back the tears all at once. "I Need You" is also a strong entry with its heavy riffing and its Jimmy Eat World-esque "whoa"s in the chorus, and "Give" is a beautifully crafted ballad. Good work, boys - now let's put out that 5-star album next time, because I still believe you have it in you!
For the next round, I'll do Cindy Morgan's Real Life.

However, I can tell The Shins have an "A"-grade album in them. Yeah. It's called Chutes Too Narrow. I would go with a 6.5 for Future of Forestry's Twilight. I like where the drums are in the mix, and a little guitar squall never hurt anyone. Much of it does run together and seems to run on, though, which is a good part of the reason why I'm going as low as I am. The lyrics remind me of youth group, but not in a completely annoying way. Good news for all of you is that 6.5 translates to a B-, or 4 stars from me.

I thought the same thing when I read that. I should probably check that one out then. I had not heard a single note of the Shins' music before picking this album for the game.

Brenden, is the next round the theme round, or is that coming later? If we're not doing the theme round next, change my pick from Rod the Mod to Lucinda Williams- West.

I'm generally going to alternate between theme rounds and regular rounds, so the next round is the themed round, then a regular round.
