I've been watching the first season of this show on DVD. So far, it's very promising (but I've only watched the first 3 episodes). Anyone else into this show?

I'm through the first 5 episodes, and let me tell you this is a hell of a drama. Specializing in a certain grittiness that even the best network dramas often sorely lack, the show's characters are all memorable and flawed.
There are some problems, and a few limitations having to do with me. I don't always understand the jive that the "hood" characters speak, and I'm having some problem believing an openly homosexual gang character would be able to rise in that community. Like many HBO shows, the cussing is pretty frequent (at least once used to humorous effect - an entire conversation between two officers investigating a murder is literally various permutations of the f-word), and you do see some bare breasts.[/watchdog] Still, it may just be the best drama I'm currently watching, and it's more than worth checking out.

I've only heard great things about this show, but never got around to watching it. It doesn't seem like my thing, but I would like to check it out sometime just based on everything I've heard.

I heard a really interesting story on NPR about the show, with interviews from some of the neighborhood kids who are actually on it. I believe some of the kids featured in the documentary
Boys of Baraka
were on the show, as well.

I heard about the show from NPR, also. I remember they mentioned that one film critic even cheated and called "The Wire" the best film of the year. Even in the first season, I can see that happening.
