The album I picked is actually called Bleeding Heart Graffiti, but that's OK.
Plvarona: 3 Bloop: 4 Josh: 3 NinjaRob17: 3 Brenden: 5
(Updated to add my guess for Josh after I noticed that plvarona had posted his rating - all other guesses were posted before that point)

Idea for the next "theme round", or a later one if you've already got the next round figured out:
"Keeping It in the Family." Groups who are comprised of, or at least contain, siblings. If that's too restrictive, we can expand it to groups with married couples or key members who are otherwise related.

I think we better go with the more expanded definiton. I can't think of many groups that fit the "siblings" thing outside of Nickel Creek. We can go with that for the next theme round, which would be next round.

I think we better go with the more expanded definiton. I can't think of many groups that fit the "siblings" thing outside of Nickel Creek. Eisley, Chevelle, Collective Soul, The Elms, and Leeland come to mind for starters, though how many groups with siblings in them have just released something that can be reviewed may be another story. Sometimes these bands aren't billed as sibling bands even though siblings are in them. But the expanded definition is definitely easier.

The Fiery Furnaces, Oasis, and Radiohead have siblings as well. Unfortunately, people know my opinions on most of each of these bands' albums. Maybe I'll get around to giving a Hanson album a full listen.

(Looks at watch) I don't mean to "jump the gun" here, but it looks like it's well past the deadline. I'm probably going to be pretty busy later in the day, so I might as well get this out of the way now. I must have picked a good one this week, because the guesses for me were all over the map. Album Reviewed: The Balancing Act - Cool Hand Luke Pros: I already knew coming in that this album would sort-of be "The Reintroduction of Cool Hand Luke", and as such, I thought the song selection for the older songs was fairly decent. Most of the highlights were included ("Cinematic", "One Time", "Skydive"), and the inclusion of their older songs was interesting in that it gave a good idea as to how far the band has come since the early days. I'd even say this CD is a lot more comprehensive than a lot of "Greatest Hits" CDs nowadays. The three new songs are all great, with "The Balancing Act" ranking among my favorite CHL songs of all-time. If those songs are any indication of the next all-new album, I can't wait. I thought the liner notes, with the personal testimonies of Mark Nicks and former member Jason Hammil, were especially a nice touch. Cons: There were a few glaring omissions, most notably "Heroes Will Be Heroes", their biggest radio hit. Even though the inclusion of the older, screamo songs were nice for gaining perspective, those songs really weren't very good. While the track arrangement makes sense conceptually, it sounds very awkward musically, especially when "Cinematic" and one of the screamo songs were placed next to each other. The Bottom Line: It's certainly a flawed CD, but as far as pseudo-"Greatest Hits" CDs goes, I still think this one has more to offer than average. The new songs especially increase my anticipation for their next all-new Cool Hand Luke album. Ratings: All this considered, the overall strength of the material, especially the new songs, is enough to balance out the flaws and push this CD into the "B-" range, which is a low 4 stars. On Deck For Next Week: Article One, a band led by two brothers. I believe their upcoming album is self-titled. Here's a link to some full audio samples: http://inpop.com/artists/article_one.html

Well, Anberlin has a great track record so far. Three good albums in a row, nice. This album is great, they've matured their sound, added some variations while keeping their distinct style, and the lyrics have improved. The only songs I'm not really sold on are "Hello, Alone", which is a little too typical musically and "Inevitable", which is a little too sappy for my tastes. The bonus tracks are nice, but the only one I think is really strong is the Smith's cover. The original is good, but nothing memorable and The Promise is fun but a bit cheesy. I don't have any real major problems with the album, really, it's their strongest effort. Overall, I'll go with an A-, rounding up to 5 stars.

Woohoo! I think that's the first time (or at least one of the first times) that I've correctly pegged someone for a 5-star rating. I didn't like "Inevitable" as much either until I saw them all standing in a circle playing the drums at the same time on the DVD. That really adds a lot to the song. Anberlin does pretty good ballads, on the rare occasion that they actually do them.

I was going to listen to Nina Gordon one more time today before posting my rating, but I don't think I have the intestinal fortitude to get through that album yet again. Yeah folks, it's a stinker. Some of you were apparently hoping that I'd hear the mellow, sweet melodies and relate to the numerous breakups songs, because often those things work for me. But the songwriting is embarassing and the musical mood is far too mild-mannered throughout most of this album. When Nina gets upbeat, as on "Suffragette", she just further embarassed herself with the lyrics. There are a grand total of two Nina Gordon songs that I love - one is called "Tonight and the Rest of My Life", which is a simple but mesmerizingly lovely song. The other is called "2003", which is totally a girlie high school song but I love it for sentimental reasons. Unfortunately both of those songs were on Nina Gordon's previous album, which she released over 6 years ago. The fact that it took her 6 to come us with this pile of bland oatmeal is rather disconcerting.
Bleeding Heart Graffiti has the occasional sweet melody or musical ambience that works for me, so I'll spare her the ultimate humiliation and go with 2 stars.

John Reuben's record fun and ever so slightly biting in places. There's nothing here that is really swinging for the fences in terms of creativity, or production, and his delivery was a little awkward in places, but it's about what I was expecting, I guess B-ish (6.5), or 4 stars.
(It was also hard to listen to it nearly as many times as I like to this week because I had the big program at school, but I fit it in)
Next Round: The Walk by Hanson.

I've listened to this album countless times now, and I still can't remember anything about it after listening to it. However, while listening to it, I always find myself enjoying it. So, in short, it's a good but forgettable album. I'll make it a B, or 4 Stars.
Next week is Chevelle's This Type of Thinking Could Do Us In.

In my opinion, yes. I think they take the innocence and harmonies of Eisley and add some electric oomph to it.
