Can I help you?

I don't dislike it; it's just that there's so little to it that I consider it more of an interlude rather than a song to be singled out on its own. But it's your mix and I assumed it had some personal meaning to you, so this isn't a criticism. (I put a 10-second Relient K "song" on my most recent mix, after all.)

It does, indeed. I have some very specific pictures from my memory when I hear the song.

That tends to overrule everything else when making personal mixes like these; I have songs on some of mine that I didn't honestly like all that much until some personal experience got intertwined with the song in my mind, and it wouldn't make sense to anyone else why they're there.

8. "Umbrellas" Sleeping at Last

Man, I really want to know what personal event that song's attached to! (It's not even attached to a personal event for anyone in the band. I asked Ryan O'Neal about it after a concert and he said it was about his made-up future family.)

Actually, there isn't much of a story behind that one.  "Umbrellas" just happened to be playing on my car stereo the minute I crossed the Louisiana border while I was moving here.  (I was listening to the Keep No Score CD at the time.)  However, it was one of those things that made me go "Hmmm...  I wonder if there's any significance to that."  So I decided to capture that here and see if it turns out to be prophetic or not.

Nice picks.  Just curious - which version of "No One Really Wins" is that?  I like the original, but the acoustic version from Dressed Up and In Line is gorgeous.  The line "It's a fight between my heart and mind" makes me swoon.

Nice picks.  Just curious - which version of "No One Really Wins" is that?

It's the original, which I know is a bit out of date compared to all of the other current stuff on the list, but I just discovered In Motion this year. I love how loud the drums are on that song - they're just raw and they dominate the song. It's like being right there in the studio with the band playing the song all in one take, which is really weird in comparison to the meticulously crafted stuff on Eat, Sleep, Repeat, which is beautiful but must have been ProTooled to death.

I like the original, but the acoustic version from Dressed Up and In Line is gorgeous.

I'll make a note to check it out. The version of In Motion that I bought actually has a bonus disc with acoustic versions of "Don't Slow Down", "Pin Your Wings", and two other songs I've never heard before, so if those aren't on Dressed Up and in Line, I can pass 'em along for you.

The line "It's a fight between my heart and mind" makes me swoon.

I was originally going to put that song next to "Jean Val Jean" because both songs mention a fight/battle between grace and pride. But it didn't work, tempo-wise. The sudden cut out of "No One Really Wins" into Deas Vail's "This Place Is Painted Red", which opens with its own rapid-fire drumming, was a happy accident that I discovered when I had WinAmp on random.

"Jean Val Jean" turned out to work well after "Safe to Land", because "Safe to Land" is about an individual frightened that they've run out of grace, and "Jean Val Jean" is about extending grace to someone who doesn't deserve it. "Safe to Land" is one of the best songs that Jars of Clay has ever written, and coming from me, that's saying a hell of a lot.

On the back half, it was now or never for "Half Our Lives" and "Strawberry Swing". Those are the quintessential "peaceful summer songs". I almost cut them in favor of Coldplay's "Violet Hill" (I have a strict policy that an artist can only appear once per disc) and to make room for other artists who didn't end up getting represented at all on either disc, but it just felt wrong to save them for a mix made in the fall. "Violet Hill" will probably make the next compilation. Actually, most of Coldplay's and Sanctus Real's latest albums will probably find their way onto these mixes eventually.

On another note, I think my wife is becoming a Katie Herzig fan. She loves the song "Forevermore" (which is one of my favorites, too) and put it on a mix CD that she made for her friend's kids, that was otherwise mostly populated by Disney songs.

NP: "Frank Morris", Capital Lights

Those two songs come from Beneath Medicine Tree, which is just as good as their other two albums.

EDIT:
Here's my in progress soundtrack of 08 highlights:

Portishead - Machine Gun
Elbow - Grounds for Divorce
Death Cab for Cutie - Cath...
My Morning Jacket - Highly Suspicious
Apes & Androids - Make Forever Last Forever
Why? - The Hollows
Jade - Ready
Chris Wood - England in Ribbons
Wintersleep - Weighty Ghost
Goldfrapp - Clowns
M83 - Skin of the Night
Jon Foreman - Somebody's Baby
Balmorhea - Barefoot Pilgrims
Animal Collective - Water Curses
Have A Nice Life - Bloodhail
The Bug - Jah War
The Mars Volta - Goliath
Cloud Cult - May Your Heart Stay Strong
The Envy Corps - Story Problems
Sigur Ros - Festival

Some of these songs were just impossible to fit in nicely, but I did my best.  I'll post a download later.

Nice ninja edit there. It took me forever to notice there was anything new in this thread.

Elbow - Grounds for Divorce
My Morning Jacket - Highly Suspicious
Jon Foreman - Somebody's Baby
Sigur Ros - Festival

These are all solid picks (well, the second half of "Festival", anyway - it's definitely a good song to close with). I'm surprised that someone else considers "Highly Suspicious" to be a highlight. It seems to really irritate a lot of people who are otherwise fans of MMJ.

Some of these songs were just impossible to fit in nicely, but I did my best.

This is often the reason why otherwise good songs don't make the final cut on some of my mixes - it's just too difficult to make them fit in with their surroundings. Usually I just put them off until a later mix and eventually find a home for them.

I'll post a download later.

Are we still doing that? I had stopped doing it a while back because I didn't think anyone would actually download it. But I'm more than willing to resume the practice.

Here's my condensed "Best of 2008" mix, which attempts to represent my favorite artists and albums from the year 2008, as well as a few individual songs that really stood out even though the album overall might not have. I squeezed in as much as I could while keeping both discs under the 80 minute limit.

DISC ONE
1. "No Cars Go", Arcade Fire
2. "The Sky Is Falling", Thrice
3. "Sunrise", Olivia the Band
4. "All Our Memories", Edison Glass

6. "A Clean Shot", The Myriad
7. "That Man I Shot", Drive-By Truckers
8. "Blackbird", Alter Bridge
9. "God Will Take Care of You", Plumb
10. "Rafe", Fauxliage
11. "In the Girl There's a Room", Sara Groves
12. "Thank God", After Edmund
13. "We Need Each Other", Sanctus Real
14. "Kingdom of Comfort", Delirious?
15. "Baptize My Mind", Jon Foreman
16. "Mirrorball", Elbow
17. "Falling for You", Leeland
18. "Lay Me Down", Cindy Morgan

DISC TWO
1. "Allergies", Barenaked Ladies
2. "Living Well Is the Best Revenge", R.E.M.
3. "Viva la Vida", Coldplay
4. "Ragged Wood", Fleet Foxes
5. "Adore Adore", Yoav
6. "Gobbledigook", Sigur Ros
7. "Hologram", Katie Herzig
8. "Sealion", Feist
9. "Highly Susipcious", My Morning Jacket
10. "Otherside", Third Day feat. Robert Randolph

6. "In The Valley Of The Dying Son" -House Of Heroes
7. "Russian? We're Barely Moving!" -The Human Flight Committee

I find the juxtaposition of these two amusing, even though I know nothing of the Human Flight Committee. It would be even funnier if the House of Heroes song was "Baby's a Red".

Oh wait, you just listed the artists in alphabetical order. Never mind. I thought it was weird to start with that Anberlin song...

Yeah, this isn't the final mix, I just put them in alphabetical order for now. I also need to put a couple more songs in, I just haven't decided on them yet.

Anybody know of a site where I can create a playlist for others to stream rather than download?  If not I'll just have to upload mine.

EDIT: Nevermind, here's one.  They didn't have Balmorhea - Barefoot Pilgrims, Helios - Glimpse or Declan de Barra - Red Forest, so I just replaced those with the best of what they did have (which in Declan's case was nothing Sad... check his cd out though).  Thankfully they still flow okay and are still good songs.

I tried to keep the track order as close to chronological as I could, but obviously I shuffled the songs a little bit to make the CD flow better.

September/October mix. This one was a pain to put together for several reasons - see the starred tracks for details.

DISC ONE
1. "The Outsiders", Doves
2. "The Nerve", Mute Math
3. "Sick Muse", Metric
4. "Uprising", Muse
5. "Lose Control", House of Heroes
6. "Hills of Indigo Blue", Future of Forestry
7. "What Matters More", Derek Webb
8. "Black Wedding", Meg & Dia
9. "White Light", Vienna Teng
10. "Shine", Pillar
11. "Church Music - Dance (!)", David Crowder Band (*1)
12. "Tricks of the Trade", Mew (*1)
13. "The Long Fall/Weapons", Jars of Clay
14. "The City Prevails", Cool Hand Luke
15. "Till We Make Our Ascent", The Reign of Kindo
16. "Ready, Able", Grizzly Bear
17. "Moment of Surrender", U2 (*2)

DISC TWO
1. "John J. Audubon", Anathallo
2. "Vaccine", Mew
3. "Goddess of the Dayspring, Am I", Falling Up (*3)
4. "Jena & Jimmy", Derek Webb
5. "The Weight", Thrice
6. "The Fisherman Song (We All Need Love)", Mae
7. "This Is How the World Will End", The Elms
8. "Grandmother Song", Vienna Teng (*4)
9. "So Close So Far", Future of Forestry
10. "Savannah", Relient K (*5)
11. "Solitaire", Wilco
12. "Adventures in Solitude", The New Pornographers
13. "I Hurt Too (acoustic)", Katie Herzig
14. "Slow & Steady", Sleeping at Last (*2)
15. "Pure Bride", Leeland
16. "God Almighty, None Compares", David Crowder Band  (*6)
17. "The King Beetle on a Coconut Estate", mewithoutYou

(*1) The David Crowder Band and Mew songs I picked just happened to have programmed beats that lined up almost perfectly in terms of their sound and tempo, except that the DCB song slows down gradually at the end to match up with the song that follows it on the CD. So I had to use my hack producer skills to timewarp it, a few measures at a time, to make the end part keep pace with the rest of it, and then figure out the least awkward point to cut it off and bring in the Mew song to make it sound somewhat continuous. This was a pain in the ASS, but I'm glad that I sort of made it work.

(*2) Really wanted the U2 song on the second disc, leading up to the finale, but I had too many long songs on that one and I was over my 80-minute limit for the disc, so I exchanged it with the Sleeping at Last song that was originally meant to be at the end of the first disc.

(*3) The Falling Up song ends with a really bizarre outro on the CD, and I couldn't decide whether to cut off all of the outro or just fade it at the part where things got weird. I eventually decided to dump the whole outro due to time constraints.

(*4) There's a brief pause at the end of the Vienna Teng song, then they all applaud their work; I decided to cut that off and go immediately into the Future of Forestry song, which opens with stomping and clapping.

(*5) Wanted to use the "Oasis" intro from the Relient K CD, then realized it flowed better with the track "Savannah" by itself. (I don't like the "Baby" outro, so I was never gonna use that.)

(*6) The other DCB song sounded awkward when you jump right to the start of it on the CD, so I grabbed part of the segue from the end of "Oh, Happiness" (the song preceding it on the album) and used that as a fade-in.

Phew! That was perhaps my most difficult mix CD project ever.

I know I'm late with this, but I'm pretty close to getting a zip file of my "Best of 2009" CDs available.  So Ian, murlough, and anyone else who is interested, I'll send a link to the file when it is available.

Here's a compilation I made of my some of my concert highlights from this past year.  This is actually first time in several years that I had a full CD of concert favorites.

Phil's 2009 Concert Favorites
1. "Face Down" The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
2. "Letdown" This Providence
3. "Wish" Paper Route
4. "On The Safest Ledge" Copeland
5. "Come Love, See My Hands" Brooke Waggoner
6. "Dark Hotel" K.S. Rhoads
7. "Wish You Well" Katie Herzig
8. "Love, Save The Empty" Erin McCarley
9. "Save You" Matthew Perryman Jones
10. "The Problem" BeauSoleil
11. "Women Be Wise" Bonnie Raitt
12. "Up to the Mountain (MLK Song)" Patty Griffin
13. "Why Should She Wait" Marc Broussard f/ Sara Bareilles
14. "Dreaming" Sons of William
15. "Runaway Car" Mat Kearney
16. "Jealous" Marc Scibilia
17. "A World Apart" Vedera
18. "The Sound (John M. Perkins' Blues)" Switchfoot
19. "What You Give Up To Get It" Derek Webb

I think it would be safe to assume this is my most eclectic "Concert Favorites" CD.

7. "Wish You Well" Katie Herzig

I got to see her perform that one with Vienna Teng, which made me all starstruck and stuff, but for me it was "Forevermore" and "Hey Na Na" that stole the show.

6. "Candlelight/Flare", Relient K
7. "Light a Roman Candle with Me", fun.
Did you put those songs back-to-back on purpose?

As a side note, I really liked ending that particular disc with "Green Screens."  Now that I think about the lyrics, that song works pretty well as a closer.

Now for the original reason I'm posting here.  I just burned my "2009 in Song" CD, which are basically songs representing different events in my life this past year.  It seems like these CDs always take longer to finish than I want.

My 2009:
1. "This Town" O.A.R.
2. "Stir" downhere
3. "I Remember (It's Happening Again)" Griffin House
4. "I Win" Starflyer 59
5. "Stare The Monster Down" delirious?
6. "Safe to Land" Jars of Clay
7. "Dance in Perfect Time" Deas Vail
8. "My Feet Can't Fail Me Now" The Dirty Dozen Brass Band
9. "These Hard Times" NEEDTOBREATHE
10. "Confident" John Reuben
11. "Dear Future" The Fold
12. "Armistice" Mute Math
13. "Sunny Days" Joy Williams
14. "Crashing Down" Mat Kearney
15. "Love is Different" Caedmon's Call
16. "Emmanuel" Silers Bald
17. "Holiday" Future of Forestry
18. "Clocks" Coldplay
19. "Southbound Train" Jon Foreman

Absolutely!

I struggled to figure out what to close with, since I didn't have a really obvious "wrap things up" sort of song. Musically, it followed the Steven Curtis Chapman song well.
