Assuming I can download it, I'll keep Michael Giacchino's score for Season 2 of Lost on standby if nothing better comes up.

Pretty much throwing up a white flag here.

Brenden: 4
Bloop: 4
NinjaRob: 3
Josh: 3

Also, just to give you guys a heads up, I won't have my rating posted until Tuesday morning (although I'll try to get it in as early as I can.)  There's some basketball game going on involving one of my alma maters that just might have my attention on Monday night.

The round is officially over.

Maria Taylor's album. The first half is pretty good, but the second half isn't really all that memorable. I've listened to the album 6 or 7 times now and nothing from that half of the album has stuck in my mind. The lyrics are pretty good, the music is fine, most of the songs just lack any strong hook. A Good Start, Clean Getaway, and No Stars are standouts, but there's also bombs like My Own Fault, Replay, and Small Part Of Me.

Ya know how Hanson had weak lyrics, but I thought the melody and music helped make up for that? Not so here, most of the music runs together until it's hard to tell when one song has ended and the next has begun.

Blah, I give this one a C, 3 stars.

Next Round: Half Past Forever - Take A Chance On Something Beautiful

Hellogoodbye was tough to rate. On the one hand, it's guilty pleasure city, with all manner of synth/techno beats and a few vintage pop/rock rhythms and even a mandolin-laden ballad that sounds like Nickel Creek taking a Hawaiian vacation. Fun stuff. But the lyrics... YIKES. Somehow they manage to be myopically specific and ape all the teenage cliches to a T - I feel like so many of the songs are written to impress a specific girl who will get all the references, and the rest of us just have to guess. Sorry, I'm not interested in guessing who you guys have crushes on. So I tend to take refuge in the more general love songs, the best of which have some pretty killer hooks.

This is, like, music to build your MySpace to. I give it a C+, which means 3 stars.

Next round, since I can't think of anything else, the Lost Season 2 soundtrack by Michael Giacchino.

It doesn't look like I'll be breaking out the "monkey wrench" again this week.

Album Reviewed: The Day of Small Things - Alli Rogers

Pros: I'm a sucker for well-written acoustic folk-pop albums with a lead female vocal, and this album certainly qualifies.  Alli has a fair amount of insightful songs here, ranging from her comparison to two mothers in Africa and America in "Tanzania" to her story of a failing marriage in "The Family is Fine."  The instrumentation is also varied just enough to keep my interest.  Quite a few songs stand out for me, including the upbeat "Hope", the country-ish "Fearless", the triple-metered "Iowa", and the more reflective "Liar's Dream."  There really isn't a single track I dislike, although there are a few that I wish could have been fleshed out a little more.

Cons: Alli's voice can get a little whiny at times, although it doesn't get to the point of truly irritating me.  "The Day of Small Things" and "Wings of My Back" sound incomplete.  Even though the worship songs ("One Body", "Praise The Lamb") are well done, they seem like nonsequitirs (sp.?)  These are all really nit-picks, though.

The Bottom Line: I like this album a lot.  As I mentioned earlier, there's always room for a good female folk-pop singer in my CD collection, and if Alli continues like this (or better), she could be among my favorites in that genre before long.  There are too many flaws for me to consider this a great album, but it will certainly find its way into my CD player quite a bit.

Rating: "B+", which is a strong 4 stars.

On Deck For Next Week: Jennifer Lopez's Como Ama Una Mujer.  (I'm serious!)  I believe there are clips for that album available on amazon.com.

Sorry, guys.

While the musicianship is quite good, in an angular post-rock kind of way, I find myself zoning out a bit during the Battles album.  At times, I just wished they would leave out the processed vocals, some of which sound like a procession of small woodland rodents.  Maybe my expectations were heightened after reading some of what those on my other board were saying, but it's not that good.  It is, however, well above average and I would recommend it for those who like a more experimental approach to music.  I'll go with a 7.0 (B), which for the purpose of this game, translates to 4 stars.

Next up:  Half Past Forever's Take A Chance on Something Beautiful.  The lead singer is Sligh from Idol.

I'll give 4 stars to LCD Soundsystem. For its genre, it's quite good, but I'm not at all a fan of the genre, and am not yet sold on its creative vibrancy. But it's kinda fun.

I have similar problems rating those "kinda fun" CDs that aren't terribly engaging to me on an artistic level, but difficult to stop listening to. They always hover right between 3 and 4 stars - like Hellogoodbye this round.

I'd argue that the problem isn't that it lacks artistic merit, but it isn't as engaging to the individual as what is typically included in their musical diet.  I figured it would be that kind of album for Josh.  (I think I'm having a good round)

In other words, I think these two statements are related:

Yeah, it's not exactly the same thing, but similar - what you perceive as flaws are somewhat glaring and frustrating, and yet in spite of that there's a lot of enjoyment to be had. That sort of thing makes it difficult to settle on a rating.

I'm having a pretty good round so far, too - who are we still waiting for?

I'm going to do Jarvis Cocker-- Jarvis. (It fits the TV theme, I think, because, back in the day, Jarvis was something of a TV star in Britain, appearing as a panelist or commentator on many culture and arts-related shows.)
