Seeing as how Vlad goes to VaTech, this hits close to home for us phorum members.  Let's just hope he is okay and that the campus will unite over this tragic incident.  21 people were killed including the shooter.

Unreal.  I saw the news at 11 this morning and eight were dead at that point...by the time I got back to my room at 12:45 22 people were injured and 21 dead.  Freaking unbelievable.

Yeah, I immediately thought about Vlad when I read that story.  Unspeakable tragedy.

Vlad! Come tell us you're alright!

I know a couple other people that go to Tech as well...

Truly awful. Sad

Vlad!'s last post in the "Provisional Pub" thread indicated that he'd be away for most of this week, so I'm going to assume that he's OK because he wasn't even on campus, but we probably won't hear confirmation from him on that for a while. Rather serendipitious, the timing of this.

Due to something coming up unexpectedly I'll be away throughout most of next week, starting Sunday, 14 April (technically today, but logically tomorrow). The Pub will not be available during that time.

I hope that's the case.

And that timing is WEIRD.

I didn't even see you post this and I had remembered him saying something in the Pub thread.

On thejosher, BDG stated there were two shooters. The first shooter killed one and injured one, and the 2nd shooter claimed the lives of the rest. The first one has been detained.

I just posted it today, after learning about the shooting (I'm West Coast and I tend to get up late) and remembering what Vlad! said about the Pub while I was away this weekend, so if you missed it, it's because I was a bit late to the discussion.

One of my spiritual mentor is now the BCM (Baptist Collegiate Ministry) director there, and it is also his alma mater.  I know he and his ministry will play a major role in helping people deal with this, but wow, what a tragedy.

Also hoping that Vlad was away & is ok.  When I thought of Blacksburg i remembered him.  Prayers for his safety as well as that of friends and family!    hopefully when things calm down we can get confirmation that all is ok with him.

If anyone would know whether Vlad! is OK, it's Original Recipe Josh. I might give him a call later today and see if he's had any offline contact with Vlad!

Thanks for the concern, pholks.

The reason I had to leave suddenly was because I received news that my grandfather had passed away, so I'm in Ohio right now for the funeral. I hadn't heard about this myself until a couple hours ago, as we were on the road.

This certainly does hit close to home. I'm still in a bit of a daze, with the news that grandpa had died, immediately jumping in the car and driving down to Knoxville, then driving up to Ohio the next day with my parents and brother, then getting out of the car and immediately hearing this news.

Norris hall, the site of the classroom shootings, was where I had my first class at Virginia Tech. I still have trouble believing that this has actually happened.

Thanks for the concern, and I will appreciate your prayers for the families of those who have lost loved ones.

Glad to know you're OK, Vlad! Not to make light of those who aren't OK, but you know how it goes, the first people you always think of are the ones you've interacted with personally.

Vlad! I'm very glad to hear that you are ok. The second I heard of the shootings I thought of you. I knew it was very unlikely that you were there but I couldn't help but wonder, so I'm glad I could check the phorum and hear from you. I am so sorry to hear about your grandfather. I know its been a long time since we've talked but I've always enjoyed our conversations in the past. I find the shooting to be really sad and I will continue to pray for all involved. I think it's a great reminder of how short our lives here on earth are and we never know when we will meet our Maker.

But I just wanted you to know it made me happy to see your post!

When I heard of the location of the shootings and what was involved, I thought it was tragic, but figured "thank God, nobody I know was in classes in that building at that time".

I was wrong. When I saw the list of victims today, the first name was Ryan Clark. My freshman year, Ryan lived across from my roommate and I. He was a friendly, cheerful man who was always willing to open up his room to us. After we moved out I hadn't talked to him in a while, but then I saw him recently at a gathering of graduate students. After double-majoring in Biology and Psychology, he went on to pursue his graduate degree in Psychology. We talked a bit and caught up. He was a resident adviser at Ambler Johnson--some may recognize the name of the dorm first involved in the shooting--and I'm sure he was great at it, since he was always a very compassionate, empathetic person.

I don't know much about his family, though in addition to his parents he also has a twin brother (not at Virginia Tech). Maybe it's selfish to ask for specific things just for the one that I know, but if you could say a prayer for the family of Ryan Christopher Clark then I would appreciate it.

In addition, if I may interject another personal note, my grandmother was taken to the hospital today for pneumonia. I know you hear about one spouse dying and the other following soon after, and they had been married for 64 years. We definitely don't want to see her go, but I think she is so terribly sad to be without him that I don't think any of us want to force her to hang on when she's really ready to move on. If you could pray for my family as well, we would all be grateful.

Well, when you feel like being unselfish and taking on the prayer requests of every single suffering person in the world on a daily basis, please let me know, because I'd be interested to see how a person would find the time.

That's my sarcastic way of saying, don't worry about it if you're just praying for someone specific that you know. It's not like there aren't other people praying for the families of those other victims, or the school in general, or whatever. And even if fewer people were praying for any one individual, that doesn't make God less likely to answer those prayers. We pray for what we can. Nobody can cover everything.

Though we're a few thousand miles away and don't have any personal connections to the shooting or the school (except for me knowing you, Vlad!), it's interesting to see how this has affected some folks who I go to church with, since my church is largely Asian and a lot of them are feeling a bit of guilt due to the fact that the shooter was Asian, or more specifically, Korean. It's one of those things that I'll admit to not getting because I don't come from that culture - I don't feel guilty when some white shooter goes on a killing spree, though if the crime is racially motivated then I probably will feel the need to distance myself from those sentiments and say "Not all white people are like that". But I guess it gets at the larger preconception that people have, that when one person of a particular ethnicity does something bad, it reflects on all of them. I wish people didn't see it that way. I mean, do people think he did it because he hates America and wanted to make a statement on behalf of South Korea or something? Because last I checked, we got along with them pretty well.

My not-so-humble take--I don't think there's going to be any racial repercussions among the vast majority of society in America.  There just won't be.  Yeah, some crazies will try to make some noise, but I don't think the fact that was originally from South Korea had anything to do with the fact that Cho sounds like a psychopath.

Vlad!: sure thing.  My really good friend here ran track in HS with Leslie Sherman, so if you could pray for Leslie's family, that would be amazing.  The VTech connection stretches a long way.

You're probably right. Unless there's something significant that I'm forgetting, we got through 9/11 without widespread violence against Arabs - there was certainly a lot of hatred, which is not to be excused, but still, I don't think we had a lot of violence or deaths due to misguided vigilantes. Not to diminish what happened here, but it is on a smaller scale, so we should be OK.
