so for a while now I've had the idea to do a random poll and change the questions sporadically, just because. I don't guarantee that there will be a poll choice for every nuance of every answer, so write-ins are welcome. and for posterity's sake I plan to copy and paste results into the thread before I reset the poll. we are very concerned with posterity and scientificicity scientifikness being like science here.

I don't remember what my behavior is vis a vis flowers and fireballs. And of course now that this poll is here, I won't be able to experiment without the possibility of skewed results. I want to say that sometimes I randomly squirt the fireball just because I can, and sometimes I don't, but I'm not sure.

And I'm definitely not too old for games like that. I played New Super Mario Bros. for the DS on a plane a couple months ago, and it was a great time-waster (the stewardess was also playing a DS; I would have checked to see what she was playing, but they say to not use the WiFi features of the DS while in flight because it emits plane-destroying rays that will doom us all).

Question:
when you play a Super Mario game, don't you invariably make him shoot fireballs as soon as he has gotten a flower, just because he can?

Results:
yes, of course, doesn't everybody?    - 6 (100%)
not if there's no baddie(s) to shoot.    - 0 (0%)
I'm too grown up and stuffy to play games like that.    - 0 (0%)
it's not a flower and those aren't fireballs.    - 0 (0%)

I appear to be the first yes.

I'm not usually very ostentatious in what I wear. In a given group, I will usually be the person in the most nondescript outfit. I might wear a t-shirt with a funny image or quote sometimes, but that's about all.

However, if the opportunity presents itself and the material is provided, I do enjoy wearing funny or amusing things. But someone would have to give me the hat, as I'm too lazy to actually find one myself (ideally it would be a pirate hat of some sort, preferably with a giant feather).

I found an awesome silly hat at Books a Million the other day; it had something to do with Harry Potter, which I know nothing of, but if it had been a little cheaper I totally would've bought it.

I think one of the movies involved a talking hat, which is indeed silly, but pirates still have better hats than wizards.

it's not just a talking hat, it is a sorting hat. during the opening ceremonies of a new school year, each new student gets the hat placed on (or rather, over--the hat is rather large) his or her head and the hat makes a decision and declares which house the student belongs to. the hat also sings a song to open the ceremony. I don't think it says anything other than ceremony-related stuff.

wouldn't life be a bit simpler if a hat could tell you who you are and where you belong?

edited to add: no, I'm wrong about the hat not saying anything else. "According to Nearly-Headless Nick, who's been around a long time as the Gryffindor House ghost, the Sorting Hat feels itself honor-bound to give due warning when it detects great danger for the school. Nick says he's heard it happen several times before, and that the advice is always the same: 'Stand together, be strong from within.'"
also the hat can hide and then reveal objects if it wants to. (this was important in one of the books.)

Yeah, like I said, a talking hat.

Also, in my sig pic, Karl Marx has a pretty pimpin lampshade as a hat.

it's not just a talking hat....

anyway, my thought behind this poll had to do with someone else's observation of a man (professor) who dresses conservatively in subdued colors but enjoys wearing a bright or unusual winter hat. "everybody loves a fun hat!"

ponies! I didn't even think about ponies! I thought about frogs but didn't think about ponies.

I actually greatly prefer cats to dogs, but for some reason (and I only realized it after I posted the poll) I find puppies to be cuter than kittens. maybe puppies generally seem chubbier, while kittens often look scrawny? puppies have that paws-too-big thing which I find adorable. and very young kittens have something funny going on with their ears and eyes that I don't find all that cute.

bummer on the HP hat. now I want one too.

And Vlad!, with the predictable kitten vote. Some puppies can be cute, but at least 97% of all kittens are automatically cute without even trying.

I have never understood the phrase "cute as a button", however. Buttons are, erm, not particularly cute. Neither are ponies; sorry. Ponies, foals, calves, and such all seem (to me) to look like miniature versions of their uncute parents.

I don't get "cute as a button" either.
I think ponies are cute because they're like compact, extra fuzzy horses. they're not baby horses (in case you didn't know). I do think (some) calves are cute, mainly because they look soft and fuzzy and have a dumb expression that I find endearing. okay so cows have that dumb expression too but on calves it's cute.
I don't know why I think frogs are cute. must be the wide mouth and googly eyes.

Yeah, I know that ponies are not baby horses, but since the main focus of this particular piece of the poll is baby animals (and clothing fasteners), I figured I would lump them all together.

maybe buttons could include elevator buttons. those are kind of cuter than clothing fastener buttons. maybe not cute but I always feel compelled to push them, whereas clothing buttons generally get no response whatsoever from me.

I'm kind of surprised that so far nobody thinks human babies are cuter than kittens or puppies or buttons. XD

Even if you are the type to enjoy the sight of puling, slobbering, stinking human spawn[1], I think you have to admit that kittens and puppies are cuter still.

[1] This is also an accurate description of some puppies, minus the human part, which is why I deem them inferior to kittens

...you do have a point.

so yesterday I spent an inordinate amount of time looking at pictures of baby animals. I think some animals are just cuter in person than they are in still photographs. I have a huge soft spot for baby farm animals (goats, chickens, sheep, ducks, bunnies) but I want to see and cuddle them in person--photos are frustrating.  but then, some animals are not actually all that cuddle-able (bunnies, I'm looking at you) and that's also frustrating.

thinking about baby animals and cuddle-ableness reminded me of this blog post. scroll past the turkeys love-triangle drama and the peacock drama and see pics of the no-more-animals!-man losing his resolve. hehe.

I'll try to think of another poll soon. what do you want to be polled on?

Baby chickens are extremely cute. Baby rabbits are also cute, but they can sometimes lack the cuddle factor (a girl I used to know got her nose chomped by a bunny she tried to cuddle, much to her chagrin (and my amusement)). I generally find cuddling animals frustrating in general, since often they have a distinct opinion on the cuddle issue and it doesn't always agree with my own, so I'm fine with pictures.

This question is difficult to answer. I try to go to bed in time for me to get approximately eight hours of sleep, but whether this actually occurs or not is fairly random. On the weekends I recover whatever sleep debt I have accumulated; last weekend, with me traveling a bit and quite tired, I slept for 12 hours one night/morning. Averaged, I would guess I get 8-9 hours of actual sleep a night.

I have the terrible habit of staying up till the wee hours of the morning even though I know full well I have to be up fairly early. I think my brain won't let me figure out just how many number of hours of sleep I actually get. probably 5 or 6. when I can get away with it I will sleep for 10-12 hours, but it doesn't really make up for all the lost sleep. =\

This poll rates poorly for scientific accuracy, since the distribution is time-dependent. The poll was changed on a Sunday, but a lot of people don't read the phorum on weekends (this also means that there's a gap in the proposed answers, since on Monday, "today" will be an incorrect answer, but so will "last week", since the week begins on Sunday in the US).
