They also have the artwork up Smiley

edit: hah! I love the genre in the tags for the mp3s. "Unclassifiable"

The songs are also tagged as 2 and 11 out of 11, respectively, which tells us a little something about the track sequencing, though I haven't seen an actual tracklisting yet. Anyone else?

Eleven songs... well, we know what two of them are, and I can vouch for these others:
The Trumpet Child
Nothing is Innocence Now
I Don't Want to Waste Your Time
I'm On a Roll

...and maybe a song called "Entertaining Thoughts." That leaves 4 or 5 songs that I'm unfamiliar with; should be interesting!

And incidentally, I AM, supposedly, getting a review copy. A colleague and I were promised copies two weeks ago, actually, and haven't heard anything about them; there's been some kind of a stall, evidently...

"Let's Spend the Day in Bed" is another one.  I'm particularly excited about their venturing even further into jazz and blues.

Quote
Over The Rhine In Top Form With Essential New Album 'The Trumpet Child,' Inspired By Horns And Strings In American Music

'The Trumpet Child' the new album from the husband and wife duo Over The Rhine (out August 21st) begins with the lyrical disclaimer "I don't wanna waste your time/ with music you don't need" and even if you've followed every step of the group's 16-year career you need this music. Karin Bergquist's intoxicating, sometimes Lucinda Williams-tinged, Billie Holiday like vocals and Linford Detweiler and his mate's lush music compositions straddling folk, jazz and cabaret are at their pinnacle on this convivial American soundtrack.

Over The Rhine, named one of PASTE magazine's "100 Greatest Living Songwriters", uses literary influences and their religious upbringings to craft their minstrelsy. Only they could name children's author Shel Silverstein ("Let's Spend The Day In Bed") and Sodom and Gomorrah ("The Trumpet Child") in one album and rhyme "enchilada" with "Prada" ("I'm On A Roll") so eloquently.

Over The Rhine's music is timeless yet dynamic. Stretching their repertoire, on 'The Trumpet Child' the duo turned to pre-rock'n'roll influences like Cole Porter and Frank Loesser to infuse their own earthy style with blues and jazz. The duo revel in the same horns and strings that made the original music come alive, and take their turn at literally waking the dead in true New Orleans ragtime fashion with the sound, theme and memory of a trumpet.

'The Trumpet Child' is sure to launch a group who has toured with Bob Dylan, quietly sold over 250,000 records, broke the top 10 in New Zealand and sold more records in Paris than in their home state of Ohio, to great new heights in the US.

Over The Rhine will self-release 'The Trumpet Child' on their Great Speckled Dog label August 21st and tour throughout Europe and the US in the fall.

Besides the two MP3s, I've heard "Nothing is Innocent Now", "I'm On a Roll", "I Don't Want to Waste Your Time", and "Entertaining Thoughts", and I love every single one of them. But I love love love "Trouble". I've listened to it like two hundred times this weekend.

Aha!

1.  I Don't Wanna Waste Your Time
2.  Trouble
3.  I'm On A Roll
4.  Nothing Is Innocent
5.  The Trumpet Child
6.  Entertaining Thoughts
7.  Who'm I Kiddin' But Me
8.  Let's Spend the Day In Bed
9.  Desperate for Love
10. Don't Wait for Tom
11. If a Song Could Be President

I've heard all of them except for 9-10, and can safely say that they are almost all great.

Yeah. Incidentally, the OtR site has been totally revamped, and you can find the lyrics to all the new songs there, as well as an interview with Linford! That's where you find out cool stuff like, say, "Don't Wait for Tom" is a song about Tom Waits.  :afro:

I've heard:

I Don't Wanna Waste
Nothing Is Innocent
The Trumpet Child
Trouble

And also If A Song Could Be President (mp3).

All are fantastic.

I can't wait for the listening party!!

Enough with the accusing people of not having lives; it's getting old. Some people with lives have hobbies that they're incredibly excited about, which make them feel very much alive.

I'm giving it an A. I've listened to it several times now-- almost all day yesterday, and a few times today-- and I'm going to post some more in-depth thoughts in a day or two.

For now... let me just say that, while a lot of pholks here have heard a lot of these songs already, my FAVORITE cut on the album is one that I'm guessing no one else has heard-- "Don't Wait for Tom," a deliriously fun celebration of Tom Waits and his music. It falls somewhere between the sounds of a carnival and a horror movie soundtrack. It's performed mostly by Linford. And it's the least Over the Rhiney thing they've ever done. In fact, it sounds more like... well, a Tom Waits song. And it's so freaking cool.

Hopefully the vocals aren't like Tom Waits.

Is it still going to be enjoyable for those who don't get the in-jokes?

Although Waits is a brilliant songwriter, and his vocals match the material perfectly, I don't think you have much to fear here as he's also pretty much inimitable.  I really can't see Linford going there.

As for the question, I'm in, so I guess it just doesn't matter to me whether it would be or not.

That's a relief. I can respect vocals that fit the material, but I can also be honest when I just can't get into a vocalist for the life of me.

As for the question, I'm in, so I guess it just doesn't matter to me whether it would be or not.

Then they're banking on a good chunk of their audience being Tom Waits fans with that song. Risky. Not that I've never heard a song I didn't understand that I still thought was pretty cool.

But it's kind of like Weird Al covering Elvis Costello in concert the other day. Amusing for the few of us who got the joke, but for the rest of the audience, it kind of sucked.

The effectiveness of the song just requires you to be familiar with Waits' stage persona in general, I think; not knowing his individual songs means you'll miss a few little puns here and there, but I think you can still enjoy the song a great deal.

As for the vocals, Linford's performance is basically spoken, not sung; it's pretty much the same deal as "Jack's Valentine," or the stories he tells in concert... if you've ever heard the man speak, you have a good idea of what this sounds like. (Karin sings the chorus, and she sounds the same as ever.)

You know what, I enjoy "If a Song Could Be President" despite not knowing who half of the people name-checked in that song are, and I love pretty much all of Sufjan Stvens' songs about random cities and historic events in Illinois and Michigan despite not knowing the background info, so I think the worst that can happen here is that I'll have to hit up Wikipedia and slake my thirst for knowledge of all things Tom Waits.

(I know enough about Tom Waits to know when Anathallo was sort of aping his musical style, so I'm not totally ignorant.)

Actually, the OtR song so accurately apes his style that, in some ways, it's probably the best introduction to and summary of Waits' music one could ask for. So yeah. You'll be fine. Again, a couple of puns might go over your head, but even those you can figure out if you want to take the time to look at a list of his song and album titles. They're not subtle. (A line about a guy "fishing with a sword" is a nod to the Swordfishtrombones album, etc.)

I'm just listening to the stream of The Trumpet Child on OtR's website right now, and I'm pretty much going to echo what everyone else has said so far.  I REALLY like what I hear.  It's definitely more of a foray into jazz and blues, and they pulled it off quite well.  I'll probably need to listen to it a few more times to get a better impression, but so far, certainly so good.

I just listened to the full stream (I'm surprised a streaming audio rip hasn't surfaced yet).  I love the jazz and blues touches to the album overall.  At first blush, I at least somewhat liked every song except for "Don't Wait For Tom."  Sorry, that song is not for me.  Other than that, I thought "If a Song Could Be President" was merely okay - also not exactly my style.  But, man, there are some real gems on it.  "I Don't Wanna Waste Your Time" is a heck of an album opener.

There's probably a difference between sharing with us and putting it up on some general file sharing service for the world at large to download. All of us who like the CD are still gonna buy it even if we downloaded it first.

But I understand your decision all the same, and like I said, I'm cool with just listening to the stream... which I need to get around to doing...

Listened yesterday (several times), and I love the album. Might just have to pick this one up next month.

I think my favorite (at the moment) is Trouble. Just kind of a sassy/jazzy tune that sticks in my head.
