for some reason I think it is fun to go over to cmcentral's movie forum and post in the "what was the last movie you saw" thread, even if I don't really post much in other threads there. I thought we could have one here. it's basically just a list thread--comments on the movie are welcome but not required.
this weekend I watched: TTT
Benny and Joon (Johnny Depp was great)
How to Make an American Quilt (cried and laughed and enjoyed it more than I had expected)
and part of A Perfect Murder, which is often on tv but I have never been able to catch the whole thing.

The last one, I'm sad to say, was "Agent Cody Banks." I didn't really watch it, though. It was just on the TV and I watched part of it while doing other things.

The last one I saw was GATTACA. I also bought Minority Report at the same time but I didn't watch it since VT was playing UCF and I wanted to catch that instead.

Over Labor Day weekend I watched Spirited Away (a top 10 favorite of mine), The Muppet Movie (one of the best family movies of all time, and some great puns), The Usual Suspects, and Harvey (another top 10 favorite).
I was going to purchase a bopy of Donnie Darko and watch it, but alas, I checked three stores and none of them carried it!

Edward Scissorhands (strange, but good) That's an old movie, isn't it? I seem to recall seeing previews for it in like the third grade o.O Bruce Almighty was being shown in the Student Center a couple days ago, but I forgot to go see it ]_[

That's an old movie, isn't it? I seem to recall seeing previews for it in like the third grade o.O 1990. for some reason I thought it was older than that. I would have been in 6th or 7th grade then. funny. I had been under the impression it was a horror movie, with Edward terrorizing the neighborhood or something, but it's not. if you haven't seen it, I would recommend it. see it in the winter, when it is just beginning to snow.

I caught most of Scissorhands on TV last week. Parts of it made me think that it was a masterful modern-day fairy tale; other parts seemed just plain stupid. I need to see it again to make up my mind, but this much is true: Johnny Depp is amazing.

From what I've heard, its your standard tale of a misunderstood person, set in modern times with some dude with scissors for fingers. I could be wrong, though. basically, yeah. I don't really think of it as being quite the standard tale, though. he has scissors for hands because he was the invention of a crazy inventor who lived in a dark, haunted-looking sort of castle on a hill overlooking a bright, happy-ish town (kinda reminiscent of the Truman show town) with pastel houses and colorfully dressed but rather gossipy people. the inventor died before he could finish Edward, and he lived in the castle alone until one day, the Avon lady showed up and found him... she felt sorry for him, all alone there, so she took him home. and I gotta run to class.

Wow, kudos to that Avon lady. She must be very special (or really stupid) to take in a freak with scissors as hands. perhaps a bit of both. naive and good-intentioned but thoughtless. she reacted with fright and horror when she first saw his hands, but she saw by his actions that he wasn't coming to hurt her, and her curiosity and pity took over and she wanted to put astringent on the cuts on his face so they wouldn't get infected. I can understand if people don't like the movie but to me it's interesting to think about the various characters and the society as a whole and how they react to and interact with Edward and vice versa.

I never saw this movie. Is the birthing process of Edward Scissorhands covered because that could be truly frightening.

it's kinda covered in flashback and narrative. he wasn't born, but 'invented'. the inventor had a series of machines that cuts up stuff and mixes it and bakes it into cookies. seems like the inventor took one of the cutting machines and made it into Edward, hence the scissor hands.
