Three films in the last three days...   all in theaters.

-Cheaper by the Dozen
-Peter Pan
-Freaky Friday

All of these were fairly entertaining(with Belief Suspension turned on). I've forgotten how weird of a story Peter Pan is(it was pretty faithful to the old live action film).

I watched Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window last night.   I thought it was interesting, though I was expecting a more complex ending, rather than the fairly simple way in which the story finished.  Oh well, at least the suspense building was cool.

I saw Tomb Raider 2  and an Elijah Wood movie, All I Want.

Joy Luck Club probably would have made me cry a lot more if I hadn't been so appalled and angry at certain aspects of Chinese culture.

just finished watching My Louisiana Sky. I liked it. the dvd cover was kind of misleading, though--it has Juliette Lewis on it but the movie isn't about her character.

Rear Window - an Alfred Hitchcock film. Very interesting, but was slow at the beginning,

this weekend I watched In The Bedroom, Bend It Like Beckham, and Star Wars: A New Hope.
In The Bedroom was quite different from my impression of it. the "bedroom" actually refers to a lobster trap. a movie worth watching.
I liked Bend It Like Beckham more than I had expected to. the basic plot was predictable but who cares.
Star Wars is amusing. the chase scenes and explosions don't do anything for me but the dialog and acting cracks me up. and C3PO and R2D2 are just plain funny.

"the postman always rings twice," an old b/w film starring lana turner.

(trivia: my grandpa informed me that lana turner had insurance on her legs.)

recently I watched The Astronaut's Wife (only because I had heard it was sooooooooo bad, then I heard a friend had liked it), Sophie's Choice, and The Bourne Identity.

The Astronaut's Wife was...weird... I didn't think it was sooooooooooo bad, but I didn't really like it, either.
Sophie's Choice was...weird also... I had read about how great it is and all that, but I just didn't get into the characters or story.

What did you think about Bourne? I liked it, but it wasn't a Great Movie.

oh, I had seen it last summer in the theater and liked it okay but yeah, it wasn't a Great Movie. when I first watched it I had a hard time buying into the idea that the highly trained assassin had such a soft spot for kids, and that if he could just forget a bunch of stuff he'd be a regular nice guy, appalled with the killer instincts he finds he has. but maybe it's an unfair presumption and stereotype I have about killers.  also, since we had seen repeated times in the movie how keen his Spidey sense was, I had a hard time believing how easily he had been shot in the back.
I do like the actress who played Marie. and I have a new appreciation for the physical rigors Damon is willing to go through for his characters--compare the muscular Damon in Bourne to the emaciated Damon in Courage Under Fire.

this weekend I watched The Empire Strikes Back (giggling Yoda amused me greatly) and Rabbit-Proof Fence.

Empire is a quality film.

I watched Bourne Identity with a bunch of friends last year in a dorm, so I remember it fondly because someone (sometimes me) would always make a sarcastic comment whenever anything even remotely amusing happened ^_^

recently I watched Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth, Pi, and Lilo and Stitch.
the Joseph Campbell one was pretty interesting. there was also an interview with George Lucas on the dvd.
Pi was visually interesting for the first half, then I kinda lost interest. I picked up my knitting project (a scarf that is supposed to look like Pippin's) and didn't pay as much attention to the latter half and probably missed out on a lot. when the movie ended I felt like "okay what was this movie about, really?" but since I didn't pay attention, it is largely my fault.
when Lilo and Stitch first came out, I wasn't too interested in seeing it. after reading positive reviews, I thought I would watch it eventually, and expected to like it more than I had thought. but I didn't.

That's a good way of describing it. I've felt that way a few times myself.

maybe we should start a thread about such movies.

last night I watched PotC again. fun movie.
I dunno why, but the other times I didn't fully appreciate the fact that Mr. Gibbs on the voyage from England is the same Gibbs who is actually a pirate.

last night I watched the last of the Three Colors triology, Red. I think I actually liked this one the most, but it could be partly because there was an audio commentary that pointed out different things to notice. and perhaps the color red just makes a more visually interesting film than either blue or white.
I hadn't planned to watch the trilogy again but I kinda want to now. the three actresses, Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy, and Irene Jacob, are all superb. I had enjoyed performances by the first two in other movies but Irene Jacob's performance in Red really impressed me.

on a whim, I picked up They Might Be Giants at the library today. I have seen the phrase here and there but have no idea what it refers to. the video caught my eye and the synopsis on the back sounded interesting enough, so we'll see.

for several weeks I've been seeing an Along Came Polly billboard on my way back from work and thought I might check it out eventually. after watching the trailer for it, I wasn't so sure. would you say "don't waste your time"?

and didn't Ben Stiller do the whole overflowing-toilet gag in another movie already?

I finished watching They Might Be Giants. it has some really good laugh-out-loud moments and is well-worth watching. but the ending baffles me.

Dr. Mildred Watson: You're just like Don Quixote. You think that everything is always something else.

Justin Playfair: Well, he had a point. 'Course he carried it a bit too far. He thought that every windmill was a giant. That's insane. But, thinking that they might be, well... All the best minds used to think the world was flat. But what if it isn't? It might be round. And bread mold might be medicine. If we never looked at things and thought of what might be, why we'd all still be out there in the tall grass with the apes.

I'm almost embarrassed to mention one of the movies I watched on Monday with my friend. I watched Mel Brook's Blazing Saddles. Yeah, it's worth a few chuckles, but it's got some really lewd humor (to the point of not being funny) and it's full of racial stuff (humorous, but perhaps not in the best taste). I've never been a big fan of Mel Brook's humor. You're familiar with his work, if you've ever watched Get Smart. A few good chuckles and then the rest is just stupid.

On the other hand, I watched Monty Python's "And Now for Something Completely Different" or something like that. I only saw a few select chapters, but it was great. What you would normally expect from the Monty Python boys.

just finished watching The Italian Job. I liked the Mini Coopers and the chase scene (and I usually don't like chase scenes).  at one point it looked like there was a pedestrian dressed in a Spiderman suit--I got a laugh out of that.

Lost in Translation - still just lovely. this was my second viewing, and it took me a bit longer to get into it, probably because i was restless for bob and charlotte to meet, but ultimately i was sucked in again and by the end, sat motionless as the credits rolled. just so lovely.

Elephant - i've heard mixed reviews on this one, but i really loved it. well, as much as one can love such a sobering film. it made me feel exactly how i felt when columbine happened. it was kind of a surreal experience. also depressing...yeesh. high school. i'm so glad i don't have to go through that again. the scary thing is how 'every school usa' the high school in the film is (and also columbine). i could see it happening at my high school.

speaking of scary high schools....thirteen. wow. this made me not want to ever have children. the performances were excellent, especially evan rachel wood and holly hunter's (as usual). i just couldn't get over how self-destructive these girls were. it was almost like they wanted to kill themselves and nothing would stop them til they somehow hit rock bottom or succeeded in doing so. definitely worth watching, but scared the bejebus out of me. shall now be watching my 12 year old sister intently and keeping all computer-screen cleaning aerosol cans out of her reach.

Spellbound - i finally got to see this documentary everyone's been talking about. i've actually watched the national spelling bee on tv in years past, so it was interesting to see a handful of the kids and get their back stories. it's hard not to root for all of them, even the slightly obnoxious ones. it was as gripping as one could make a spelling bee, and while i enjoyed it, i didn't think it was quite as phenomenal as everyone's made it out to be. enjoyable overall though.

I watched Thirteen recently too. what really got me was that these girls were just 13, in 7th grade.

yesterday I watched The Piano, mainly because I had heard Anna Paquin had gotten an Oscar for her performance in it. I was impressed with her performance but didn't like the movie at all.

I had planned to go see Lost in Translation in the theater on Friday but then found out it'll be on dvd tomorrow, so I plan to stop at Blockbuster and rent it.
