Over Thanksgiving break, watched: The Hunt For Red October The Great Mouse Detective The Sword In The Stone
Also, I've been watching season 1 of The Big Bang Theory, which is pretty amusing.

LA Confidential, first viewing.
Despite the great casting, acting, and camerawork, I think the best part of this movie is the plot. It starts up about seven threads and then neatly ties them all off at the end. If there's anything that keeps me from unreservedly recommending this movie, it's the large (and in my opinion mostly unnecessary) amount of nudity in it. Still, I'm very impressed.

I've seen LA Confidential twice and I STILL forgot there was nudity in it, so either I'm desensitized to that sort of thing, or it wasn't all that central to the story. I remember the violence much more, because it's bloodier than the types of films I usually prefer to watch. But I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind that sort of thing. Like you, I think the story and acting are solid.

Heh, that's ironic because the violence wasn't all that bothersome (though I definitely noticed it...there's a lot of freaking blood).
The nudity was pretty central to the story though...an illegal porn ring is one of the more major plot threads.

Love that movie, too. I saw Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Torn on this one. On one hand, the musical parodies were outstanding. But the movie itself was hit or miss. Some funny scenes, and good enough skewer of the music-bio movie, but overall just an average comedy outside of the very funny songs. C on the movie, A- on the music.

more Cosmos.
the Monk series finale. I had lost interest in the show around the 6th season, but I can't help but feel a little bit sad that it's gone.
and I'm still watching Dollhouse. is anybody else? this season I've been pretty much meh and confused about it, but the recent two episodes were awesome, I thought.

I didn't like the first season enough to go out of my way to watch the second. I liked it alright, but it took so long to get going and was so uneven that I don't care about watching it, especially since it has been canceled.

I've been watching. This season has been outstanding, especially since the move to two-hour episodes this month. Gets more dark, twisted and interesting by the episode. I really think Whedon needs to abandon long-form series and work on developing a mini-series. When he has a limited amount of time to tell a story, he dumps the filler stuff.

Sherlock Holmes
What did you think of it? I was very unimpressed by the trailer, and my former roommate (whose movie opinions I respect and tend to share) thought it was in the C+ range...but I love Sherlock Holmes and am willing to be convinced.

Sherlock Holmes
Quite enjoyable, and in a lot of ways captured the way I had understood the Sherlock Holmes of the books better than previous Holmes films had. Still, nothing that will make it a supremely memorable move for me, just a highly enjoyable one. B
Avatar in 3D
Perhaps the most immersive sci-fi world I've been transported into. Reminded me of what must have been the experience of previous generations when the Jazz Singer or The Wizard of Oz were released. Definitely proved the technology as a non-gimmick, but the glasses still made me a bit nauseous. Add to that that I had some of the worst food poisoning of my life at the time, and I was a bit uncomfortable. I'm seeing it again later in the week, so perhaps I will be more equipped to rate the whole experience. Tentatively A-.

I complained bitterly through over half of it, but I don't know why as I shouldn't have expected anything better. It's very unfortunate, as I can't imagine a better Holmes and Watson physically than Downey and Law, but it never felt like they were playing the characters I love. It was very slapsticky and full of explosions and fight sequences and the black magic/evil sorcerer plot was very unHolmesian. It felt like they were trying to do Sherlock Holmes vs. Lord Voldemort. And of course Irene Adler was given more screen time than Watson and upgraded to a full-blown love interest, because heaven forbid a movie character not have a love interest! I did like the Moriarty presence, because I didn't expect it, but still, it would've been an okay movie, if it wasn't supposed to be about Sherlock Holmes.

I enjoyed Holmes quite a bit. I didn't mind the action sequences due to the way they used Holmes' mind in those, didn't mind the humor because it was woven in well, loved that they focused on the detective story to the point where that was the most memorable thing about it to me. Also the nod towards the stories themselves near the end made me laugh. the black magic/evil sorcerer plot was very unHolmesian Really? Not to get too spoiler-y, but I thought it ended up being handled about the same way the short stories handled the supernatural when it came up. If it had been resolved any other way, I probably would have been dissatisfied, but I thought it was done well. I did think having more of Irene Adler wasn't needed and I hope she does not appear in future films as she wasn't a good character. I am, however, eagerly awaiting a sequel.

I enjoyed Holmes quite a bit. I didn't mind the action sequences due to the way they used Holmes' mind in those I liked it at first, but it started to annoy me after a while, I think because I would be like "Another fight scene, really?" didn't mind the humor because it was woven in well Don't get me wrong, I have laughed out loud many times reading Holmes stories, but the humor in the movie didn't feel like the same kind to me. It was still probably the most enjoyable part for me, though. Really? Not to get too spoiler-y, but I thought it ended up being handled about the same way the short stories handled the supernatural when it came up. If it had been resolved any other way, I probably would have been dissatisfied, but I thought it was done well. That's a good point that some of the stories do include supernatural elements; I thought about that during the movie, but it still felt weird to have, for one thing, a character that was just made up for the movie to begin with, and to have him be raising from the dead and doing magic all over the place and to have Holmes conducting black magic rituals. That's probably just me, but I didn't like it. I did think having more of Irene Adler wasn't needed and I hope she does not appear in future films as she wasn't a good character. I don't much care for her as a character in her story, but I hated her in the movie. (Then again, I just really don't care for A Scandal in Bohemia itself.)

Interestingly, the 1971 movie was called Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, despite primarily being about Charlie. The Johnny Depp remake was called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, even though it was much more focused on the Wonka character.

Then I saw Up for the first time. What an amazing movie.

Every once in a while Target will have the extended editions on sale for around $10 or less each; I got mine for $8.99 each there a couple years ago.
