Not really. I read the book a couple weeks ago, and I was really disappointed in the many differences (as I always am; I don't know why I bother); espeically the ending, which was very bittersweet in the book, and literally ended in the words "happily ever after" in the movie.

I think there's a lesson in here for all of us. Never read.

Moon. There were a couple things that were not adequately explained which bugged me. At first I thought it was just going to be, you know, Sam the Moon Monkey and his Wacky Life, so I was all set to be annoyed by how poorly the lunar technology was depicted. However, as it progressed that became very much a secondary concern. I still have some complaints, but it was very much a worthwhile film. If you live near Durham the Carolina is showing it on the nicest of its screens, so yeah. Definitely worth it.

Public Enemies
I have this to report:
Christian Bale: Yeah, he has a BA (Bad Ass) degree. Seriously, how often is he the last badass standing? Also, he is very, very, very attractive and I would allow him to father my children...um...
Johnny Depp: I saw this knowing that I can't stand Depp and I still can't, but it worked because he was playing a reprehensible murderer. I was really glad when he got blown away.

Solaris (the 1968 Kemarsky version).
It's possible that I didn't approach this film with the attitude and gravity that it deserved, but I found it to be tedious, overdone, and a complete waste of my time. The cinematography was very artful when taken by itself, but in the context of the film it's just schizophrenic and ridiculous. It has all the trappings of a film that makes use of symbolism and metaphor, but in reality it is just a disjointed series of unexplained imagery and broken iconography. Either the translation or the writing was abysmal (it was in Russian with English subtitles), and I didn't find it entertaining or interesting at all. I definitely do not recommend this film.

Whatever Works - I think that it's acted well, but little of the film's ideas really clicked for me. In particular, Patricia Clarkson and Ed Begley Jr. as two Bible-thumping Southerners who are magically transformed into enlightened bohemians by coming to New York City. I think the idea that abandoning deep-rooted beliefs being inherently good is not necessarily correct, and it's something this film enthusiastically espouses. Of course, these two characters are nominal Christians who accepted religion as a cultural norm, rather than having faith of any substance. What I did like was the lampooning of bundling nationalism and political conservatism with Christianity, although I probably would not have enjoyed the blunt execution if I didn't agree with it.

Sense and Sensibility
I ended up enjoying this more than I thought I would, mainly because of Alan Rickman and Hugh Laurie. the latter had a very small role, but he made snarky comments and held a baby disdainfully at arm's length, which I loved. I didn't like the ending and who ended up with whom, but I knew I wouldn't.

Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince
I liked it, but I wish they devoted less time to teen romance and more time to character development, as they dropped most of the memory scenes, explanation of why it matters that Snape is the HBP, but at least they kept this movie's pointless Quidditch match!

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
My first one all the way through. I swore I'd never watch any of the films, but my little brother wanted me to take him. I agree there was way too much teen romance (and yet Harry and Ginny's was magnificently ruined anyway), not enough Snape, NO ADULT VOLDEMORT (what the hell?), and I complained about most everything. I did think the Inferi were cool.

Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country
I think this is my favorite of the films starring the original cast. Nice way to fill in the gaps about the end of the human/Klingon conflict, and to hand the baton to TNG to continue the story. And hey look, it's almost half the cast of DS9!

Especially if you're watching the director's cut.
If you're not, then only two folks from DS9 (Brock Peters, who played Joseph Sisko, and Michael Dorn, who was already playing Worf on TNG and would later play him on DS9, and who was confusingly playing a character called Worf in this movie). But I didn't realize I was watching the director's cut and that Rene Auberjonois's scenes had been cut from the theatrical release until I looked up info on the film online afterward.

I wonder how many of us watched that movie because Andree said it would change our lives. XD I don't watch it very often, but I greatly enjoy it whenever I do. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves only because Alan Rickman's performance is completely insane.

I ended up watching Sense and Sensibility again. I thought I wouldn't want to, but someone else wanted to watch it, and I figured I could stand watching Alan Rickman again. it turned out that I enjoyed particular scenes very much even if I didn't especially like the story as a whole. we ended up talking quite bit about the characters and what we liked or didn't like, which seems to have increased my overall enjoyment of the film. I even feel like rewatching it soon! I also rewatched Something the Lord Made. no, I haven't overdosed on Rickman yet. maybe soon, though. or maybe not. an intervention may be needed.

The Bridge on the River Kwai, first viewing
An elegant movie, for a more civilized age.
Seriously, though, it was pretty good. It was obviously a product of its age, and I think it is in fact emblematic of its age. The outmoded "honor" of the far East is roundly criticized, while the British imperialism, though touted over that of the Japanese, is shown to be on the wane as well. But despite the rah-rah nationalism of the film and the era, I think it manages in some respects to get past that and truly explore some relevant questions about ourselves and our society. I also like it that it doesn't try to ham-handedly answer any questions, but instead presents them to us and lets us form our own conclusions.
If I have one major criticism, it's the music and the music direction. There were many times when the orchestral arrangement just plain did not mesh with what I felt the mood of the scene was. There were some points where I just thought, man, can we please get some mood-appropriate music in here?
Overall, though, I thought it was a good movie. It definitely didn't drag or lull, so though it's long I didn't feel like it was unnecessarily so. I'd recommend it.

Dark Harbor
the first half of Coraline. aside from the opening credits, I'm not really liking this. I blame listening to the audiobook (which I love) before seeing the movie. the only reason I listened to the audiobook was because I was interested in the movie, and it ruined it!
