The Godfather Part II
After II I just never bothered to see III. I heard it was disappointing...

Disappointing, yes, but not the cinematic abortion it has been made out to be. Worth a watch if you can see it for free and have nothing better to do.

Yeah, I think the intensity of some folks' criticisms of the film has been lost in translation.

Benefactors Busted (1982)
these are two BBC movies with Alan Rickman. it amused me to hear his one character talk rather rapidly about the political uses of getting "some aspect of human destiny into five dactyls and a spondee". spondee is an inherently funny word, I think. also, Firefox doesn't like it.

I just watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I liked it a lot less than I remembered....it used to be a favorite. This time, I thought the visuals were still imaginative and surreal but I couldn't buy the romance between main characters like that.

I don't think you're supposed to buy it. I think they were wrong for each other but too insecure to let it go, which is why they even tried to get back together after having their memories erased. They listened to the tapes of all the awful things they said about each other, and had a good laugh over it, and I suppose it's open-ended at that point... does the final scene illustrate that they're back together, or is that just a lingering memory of good times they had in the past? Either way, I get the sense that they're not really meant for each other but it's more of a "moths-to-flame" thing that even a memory wipe couldn't thwart.

Cold Souls.
The problem with films like this is that they frequently project an aura of artistry and significance which is not, when looking at the work itself, present. I feel like Cold Souls fits this mold well. While the performances were impeccable--especially Paul Giamatti, inexplicably playing himself--and the cinematography was at times stellar, the plot itself offered little. I feel like there were glimmers, but ultimately as either a darkish comedy or a profound commentary there was nothing there.
I'm not entirely sure where it went wrong. The premise was promising, the acting as mentioned was excellent, and the film work was, with a couple notable exceptions, not particularly heavy-handed. I'm not saying that I didn't like it, merely that it didn't achieve what I thought it could and should have achieved.

9.
I agree with the consensus of everyone else who chimed in. Though it had its weak points and it suffered a little bit from cliche at times, overall I enjoyed it. I also agree that the ending made very little sense. I suspect it was designed to appease the emotions rather than the intellect.
I also want to point out that the score and the arrangement was excellent.
On a side note, our showing was at 7:15, the movie is 1 hour and 20 minutes (maybe a couple longer since we stayed to the end of the credits, as we do for most movies), and we got out at 9pm. By my calculations this means that we saw 25 minutes of advertisements and previews. Gah.

most of Bob Roberts. it became unbearably annoying, and I only wanted to hear Alan Rickman say "and now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go pray".

(500) Days of Summer. I was most of the way through the movie before it really clicked with me. Then it went from "Hmm." to "Whoa." The wife said is was "cute". That was more than I expected.

The Invention of Lying
Quite funny, actually; I don't think I would classify it as a rom-com per se since the romance is sort of ancillary to the main story, but it's enough of a driving force to make it a viable option as a date movie. I'm not sure how I feel about certain parts--there are a couple somewhat crude scenes that keep it from being a good movie to bring the offspring to, and it walks the line between lampooning religion and sneering at it. Overall, though, I was amused and I enjoyed seeing a couple of the Arrested Development characters.
(The premise is mildly interesting but mostly played for laughs; it's a little inconsistent, but it works for its purpose).
