Where the Wild Things Are. I feel like this movie was insistent about not making anything look animated, even though the action was very cartoonish (for obvious reasons, given the source). I enjoyed that aesthetic. Spike Jonze is a mad genius. The movie was pretty good overall. A bit disappointed with the ending, but we can discuss in the thread for that film (if there is one).

Drag Me to Hell

An OK Halloween movie...depended a bit too much on being startling as much as scary, but the way the plot threads wove together was pretty good. There's one part (I won't spoil it, but if you know me and you've seen the movie then you know the one) that I just couldn't stand, though.

I dunno, it was kind of interesting but also annoying. I'll probably watch a couple more episodes at least, because Elizabeth Mitchell is cool and Morena Baccarin is creepy-cool. (Alan Tudyk is just creepy, I have decided.)

The latest Parks & Recreation. It still weirds me out to see Pasadena City Hall (which is literally a block from where I work) used as the exterior shot for Pawnee City Hall. Even weirder is the fact that our police station adjacent to City Hall is apparently Pawnee's library, even though you could literally turn right and see our library from there.

Oh, and I love the Sufjan-esque theme song to this show. That is all.

A Serious Man.

The standard Coen Brothers' dark comedy. Kicks you in the gut, helps you up, and then sucker punches you when you've turned to get your hat.

Perhaps surprisingly given the above, I liked it.

Season premier of V.

Lots of do-rama, but I'm not entirely sure that it's my thing. If I were to pick up another show, there are others that I have found more interesting with more compelling characters or better plots or funnier/more engaging dialog. Unless I hear great things about succeeding episodes, I don't think I'll continue to watch it.

I'd recommend Flashforward over this show, but I still enjoyed V.

Haha, that was actually one of the recent ones. It's a lot of fun. I've actually seen every episode, and you'd be surprised how many times I sound surprisingly knowledgeable on a subject because I saw it on Mythbusters. It's not for everybody, though, and (though I'm somewhat loath to be gender-normative here) it seems like it's targeted more at the guy audience because it's definitely low-attention-span hey-shiny-object friendly and has a lot of guns and explosions.

(A lot of the Discovery Channel programming does a good job of hitting that mix of entertaining and informative, but I've never really tried to get into any of the other shows in the same vein).

yeah, the tone of the show didn't seem like it was for me. I chalked it up to them being too high-energy and trying to make things exciting! and fun! I found it a bit exhausting to watch and would have preferred that they explain more, exclaim less, and stick with one topic at a time rather than cut back and forth to another interesting thing. my attention: you haz it. no need to make things go kablooey.

I think it's kind of funny that they go, "Oh, so that didn't explode? Hmmm. Guess we busted the myth. Now, let's figure out how to make it explode!"

Just watched Kate & Leopold. Silly time travel chick flick from 2001. It had plot holes you could drive a truck through, but the wife and I hadn't watched anything lighthearted and funny in a while, so that did the trick.

Ah, but there's where you're wrong. There is always a need to make things go kablooey. Wink

For an example of a recent episode that I loved, watch the dirty car/clean car one (Season 7 Episode 14 if you're getting it from a torrent site). I'll freely admit that they're not all winners from the science angle, but they're almost always entertaining, and that particular one was a good deal of both.

I enjoy Mythbusters, when I get a chance to watch it, which is not often, because we don't have cable. But when I'm in a hotel and flipping around the TV, I'll generally stop to watch it.

Similar thing here; traveling is generally the only time I flip channels and land on cable shows like this, or pretty much anything on the Travel Channel or Food Network.

I don't get cable but I download the shows (they air Wednesday evening, and they're generally available that same evening) and then once the DVD for that season comes out I buy it.

Honestly, if Time Warner let me pay like fifteen bucks to add Discovery, ESPN, and ESPN2 then I'd do it...but they'd rather I pay forty bucks for those channels plus about eighteen million more that I don't want, so I say 'no'.

Amen.  I'm pretty sure they lose money by not offering something like that.

Primer - an extremely low budget film about two inventors who accidentally stumble across time travel and keep using it to go back and manipulate the recent past, creating further and further iterations of the last few days/hours and potential paradoxes. It's confusing as hell, but I enjoy that sort of thing. Very talky, though, without a lot going on visually, so you have to pay close attention, and even then, it's tough to grasp.

This Is Spinal Tap. Took me a little while to get the rhythm of it and why certain things were funny, but it became pretty hilarious toward the end. The scary thing is, you could have taken away the band name and any overt indications that it was a mockumentary, and I'd have thought this was a real 80's metal band for a good third of the movie, because the real thing was already pretty ridiculous in those days.

Pirate Radio

A wonderful, beautiful, amazing film. I might have to re-evaluate when I come down from the high of seeing it, but right now I'm declaring it my film of the year (and unlike many years, I've actually seen a lot of films this year).

The trailer has a spoiler for a really great scene, so if you can avoid watching the trailer than please do so. This movie is unquestionably worth ten of your dollars and two of your hours.

Steve Zissou, eat your heart out. Rock Radio is the freaking life aquatic.

Yes, them's fightin' words. I dare you to see it and prove me wrong.

That's encouraging news re: Pirate Radio, Vlad! I requested to review it based simply on its historical context, which I find to be interesting, but wasn't sure what to expect in terms of the quality of the storytelling. I had to miss the junket so I'm seeing a matinee this afternoon, with review to come at CT Movies on Monday morning.
